Mark Millar’s relentless conquering of the entertainment world continues, as his new book Jupiter’s Legacy sets records and charts in the top three of the chart. Walking Dead, Saga, Adventure Time and newbies My Little Pony, East of West and Star Wars all have excellent months. Elsewhere the real story is that almost a third of this month’s indie titles increased in sales, when the usual trend is downwards. Only a few new titles chart in the top 200, but there’s a definite trend of consolidation across the top books, while many of the books towards the bottom are reaching the end of the line.

152 indie books charted this month, down on last month’s 139. The bottom book sold 4,369, up on last month’s 4,077. They sold approximately 1,767,473 in total, well up on last month’s 1,565,806. Average sales are also up at 11,628 per book, compared to last month’s 11,264. UK and European sales from Diamond UK are not reported in this chart.

It was a fantastic month for risers. Out of the 152 books, 48 went up in sales and 88 went down, with the rest made up of one-shots and debuts. I’ve not worked it out, but I can’t imagine anywhere close to a third of Marvel & DC’s charting titles went up in sales this month.

Image’s run as the top indie publisher continues, with an 9.04% dollar share and a 9.87% market share, while IDW have their best month ever with a 7.54% dollar share and 5.59% market share, Dark Horse have a 4.35% dollar share and a 4.09% market share, Dynamite have a 2.98% dollar share and 2.60% market share and Boom! have a 1.92% dollar share and 1.97% market share.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which are estimates, and can be found here.

Here’s this month’s top twenty indie graphic novels.

53. Angel & Faith TP Vol 3 - 1,787

The second Manhattan Projects collection and the collection of Happy are sandwiched by perennials Walking Dead and Saga at the top of the indie chart this month. It’s a very solid month for Image, with half of the top 20, the new Morning Glories book accompanying the many Walking Dead trades. Elsewhere, a good month for Dark Horse, with a collection of Sam Keith’s Aliens strip from Dark Horse Presents, the first Mind MGMT collection, a second appearance for the new Avatar book and new Conan and Angel trades. That just leaves IDW’s Star Trek prequel, in time for the film, and the ever-strong first Adventure Time collection.

Dwindling away into nothingness.

299. Mice Templar (Image)

04/2013: Mice Templar IV Legend #1 - 4,377

Mike Oeming & Bryan Glass’s anthropomorphic fantasy book returns to the chart for the first time in ages. I suspect this may be its last visit.

Selling roughly the same, the first two of Aspen’s dollar first issue initiative aren’t really faring too well.

283. Doctor Who Classics (IDW)

03/2013: Doctor Who Classics #1 - 5,954
04/2013: Doctor Who Classics #2 - 4,900

Suspect they might be starting to stretch the definition of Classics slightly by this point, as they continue reprinting tales of the Seventh Doctor from the UK Doctor Who magazine.

Starting to smooth out, but this book should be doing so much better, it’s enormously good fun.

04/2013: D&D Cutter #1 - 5,986 (+13.6%)

A small increase for this new series, but likely to drop below the last series with the next issue.

253. Last of Us (Dark Horse)

04/2013: Last Of Us American Dreams #1 - 6,032

I think this has been horribly under-ordered, while the game (which stars Ellen Page) isn’t massively well known yet (it’s not out till summer), it’s very likely to be big, and these issues will be pretty sought after then. It’s also very good, written and drawn by the talented Faith Erin Hicks. It’s had a second print, too.

Ending with the thirteenth issue, and relaunching again. There’s a movie next year, so I guess they’re trying to keep it ticking over until then.

04/2013: GFT Unleashed Vampires Eternal #1 - 7,009

A three issue mini, tying in to Zenescope’s Unleashed cross-over, more of which to come higher up the chart. Good numbers for this sort of thing.

The regular series needs a serious boost, with a one-shot special doing reasonable numbers comparatively.

225. Polarity (Boom!)

04/2013: Polarity #1 - 7,459

A rarity, a comic written by a rock star (Say Anything’s Max Bemis), that’s actually very good. It seems to be doing fairly well, with a second print.

A one-shot bringing together the two ‘Hoods in the Zenescope Universe, in preparation for the new Robyn Hood series. Pretty good sales, really.

A rather hefty drop, but overall not too bad saleswise.

202. Rocketeer Cargo of Doom (IDW)

====

05/2012: Rocketeer Adventures 2 #3 - 10,942 (-6.7%)

04/2013: Rocketeer Hollywood Horror #3 - 9,212 (-7.0%)

This new series hasn’t stablized as well as the last, but still not bad sales.

201. Snapshot (Image)

02/2013: Snapshot #1 - 13,337
03/2013: Snapshot #2 - 10,742 (-19.5%)
04/2013: Snapshot #3 - 9,310 (-13.3%)

Not smoothing out very well, but since this is essentially a reprint series these are still relatively healthy sales.

04/2013: 1 For $1 Massive #1 - 7,398 (-1.4%)

Brian Wood’s two creator owned books aren’t doing quite as well as his work for Star Wars or Marvel, but I suspect he’ll be earning more from these two books in the long run. The dollar reprint of Massive #1 does very well, probably being used as a taster for the trade by many retailers.

Not too bad a drop by Dynamite standards. I can’t be the only person that would rather Matt Wagner return to his own projects though, I wish we could get more Grendel, or even better, Mage III.

A decent debut number for the re-launched golden age character.

04/2014: Adventure Time #15 - 21,682 (-2.2%)

Adventure Time gets an astonishing eight entries this month, as reprints of the first six issues are produced with connecting covers, and pick up excellent figures. Number one sold 7,854, two sold 6,716, three sold 6,444, four sold 6,359, five sold 6,276 and six sold 6,252.
Y’know, all of these issues sell fairly decent reorders every month; I would guess that those first few issues are probably nearer the 50,000 mark in total sales now. Boom must be giddy over these numbers, this one book must be virtually bankrolling the company.

Dropping off at speed, but still really good figures for a kids book.

60. Jirni (Aspen)

04/2013: Jirni #1 - 35,777

This month’s Aspen dollar book, expect it to drop pretty heavily next month if the two books before it are any guide.

46, 193. East of West (Image)

03/2013: East of West #1 - 49,518 (59,260)
04/2013: East of West #2 - 41,838 (-15.5%)

A very healthy second issue drop, this is still selling vastly more than any of Hickman’s previous creator owned books, plus the first issue sells 9,742 copies more across a second and third printing.

03/2013: Saga #11 - 50,023 (+3.4%)
04/2013: Saga #12 - 53,339 (+6.6%)

There was a bit of a fuss about this issue, regarding images of hardcore gay sex that appear on the head of one of the protagonists (his head is a TV monitor…oh just read the bloody book), and it wasn’t on the iTunes store for a bit, which probably added a bit to this month’s increase. Even so, stunning sales.

Boom, a new arc and a blank cover variant boost sales by a third, just when you think these sales can’t surprise you any more.

3. Jupiter's Legacy (Image)

04/2013: Jupiter's Legacy #1 - 105,437

Wow. People were looking forward to this book from Mark Millar and Frank Quitely, but I don’t know that anyone expected this. There’s definitely speculator action driving these sales, and a load of variant covers, but the comic genuinely appears to be selling out all over the place as well. Nonetheless, expect a big drop for the second issue.

======

All figures on this chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to direct market retailers. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. Books shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than ones shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month.

  1. I hope Clone doesn’t get cancelled. that comic is one of my favorite comic series. The story has been just building on itself every issue. It has a deep story and a ton of action. I recommend people give it a shot.

  2. I would recommend Clone, Black Acre, Great Pacific and Nowhere Men. All are great Image series and desrve to find their nitch in the comic market. Also the new Valiant is actually pretty entertaining so you can’t go wrong with most of those either.

  3. Nick – I’m very sorry, I somehow managed to miss it, which is a pain as it’s one of the big stories this month. Here it is:

The beginning of Season Two is a dollar book, and sees an appropriately large increase in sales. The next issue has many covers, so it’ll be a little while before we see how much this helps overall sales.

Oh and Nick, thank you so much for the back matter in the new issue, it’s helped me understand a lot of things I’d missed. I think I’m going to go back and read it all from the beginning again, I think I’ll follow more easily without the gaps between issues!

  4. When reading the column, I hit the titles around 12,000 in sales and was scratching my head that I couldn’t find DW: Prisoners Of Time. Imagine my pleasant surprise to find the sales on it jumped by well over a 1000 copies this month! Some might say that’s because it features the 4th Doctor, arguably one of the two most popular incarnations of the character; I’d say it’s more because this has been a generally fun trip through Who history. There’s a reason it’s doing so well and I’m glad to see the success it’s having.

  5. Star Wars Dark Times has a new arc starting once this current one wraps up, but it does follow the other characters this book has focused on.

  6. @Ron: pretty much. His art was the only reason I gave Jupiter’s Legacy a try. Not a big fan of Millar’s writing. and would’ve skipped this otherwise.

  7. Agree with that. Frank Quitely seems like the heavy hitter out there to pull this off & an amazing artist. Seems to be alot of good guys out there these days, Finding more which is a good thing for me.

I wanted to take a look at that book and flip through it maybe even read it (does a Mark Millar book count as reading?) so can’t comment till then… Regardless of the quality of the God-Man Super family, its good to show a superhero team book can be done outside of the big two and compete if you have your stuff together. I always felt that Image success & fall discouraged the fact that it could be done well since their earlier entries in the 90s were like Hair bands were to Rock in the 80’s…Sort of psyched people out that it could be done right with out Golden Age & Silver age characters in the mix, then let the Big Two dominate without much competition and demoralize outside imaginations. These guys have jacked creators for decades, time to show them you can pack up and run another show and win against them, Best way to that in on the charts, Then start covering digital.

  8. Prophet dropped out of the rankings? That is a shame. Graham et al. are still killing it on that series which has only gotten better as the plot and characters have come together. My favorite of the many excellent recent Image sci-fi books – Prophet > Manhattan Projects > Saga > Multiple Warheads > East of West (though all are very good with a possible reservation of judgment on EoW). I am going to be really bummed if that one gets cancelled, particularly if Graham doesn’t get a chance to wrap up properly.

Also glad to see good sales for Stokoe’s Godzilla – as a long time Godzilla fan I’m loving it. Now can we get more Orc Stain?

  9. @daustin: Prophet has been running late; I don’t believe an issue shipped in April, explaining its absence on the chart.

Speaking of absence, where is the DC April 2013 analysis? I am eager to examine it.

  10. I’ll join the choir on Jupiter’s Legacy. Picked it up for the Frank Quitely art. Won’t be picking it up next issue though cause I’m not interested in an older more cynical, less funny version of Quitely and Millar’s Authority run.

  11. “Speaking of absence, where is the DC April 2013 analysis? I am eager to examine it.”

Some DC titles actually ha sales increases. I think dear old MOF has hard time wrapping his head around it.

  12. Jupiter’s Legacy #1 was solicited as returnable if a retailer ordered more copies of it than of an issue of Walking Dead (I think #106, but I’m not 100% sure). At my store (which is admittedly Marvel and Bat-friendly), we would’ve probably ordered 15 without the returnability, but we ordered 45 with it (of which I believe we have around 18-20 left at the moment).

Also, we had a free overship on Morning Glories #26 the week it came out (the same number as our initial order) and, in May, we recieved a free overship of double our initial order.

  13. I Man – I believe Morning Glories #26 may have been misprinted, and so the second lot were replacement copies. Not 100% sure – Nick?

daustin – Matthew. is correct, no Prophet in April and I don’t think there was one in May either. Although sales aren’t what they could be, I think the trade is doing pretty well and it’s very well thought of, so I think it’s safe for the time being.

  14. Mark Millar really has the direct market figured out.

Mind MGMT is such a good book. I’m really surprised its numbers are so low.

  15. No Savage Dragon this month? I’m curious to see how the price increase from $3.50 to $3.99 changes sales.

My guess is it doesn’t and everybody who reads the book at this point (as it’s closing in to issue 200) is in it for the long haul…

  16. Maybe MOF finally got tired of people griping and moaning about the way he wrote the column. I enjoy it, myself.
