Nominations for the Harvey Awards are closing this Friday. With all the nominating irregularities in recent years, I strongly advise getting together a few friends and nominating yourselves, as long as your friends include Naoki Urasawa, Jaime Hernandez, Kate Beaton, Matt Fraction, Jill Thompson, Robert Crumb, Bryan Lee O’Malley and so on.
I’m dead serious. Only WE can save the Harveys.
I’d sure love a Harvey nomination for my 1000 COMIC BOOKS YOU MUST READ, but having seen the CBG Fan Awards hijacked from time to time, I’m not sure I like the idea of getting one’s pals to gang vote for you.
Unless, of course, my pals didn’t tell me they were doing it.

The truth of the matter is that there were more than seven or eight people who did outstanding work last year – and here are more projects on my ballot that I wanted to include, but couldn’t find the space. Sure, there are a few people I nominated that I consider friends (I cast a nomination for BAYOU, for example, which I think is a damn fine book) – but I was honest with my nomination, and I hope other are too …
I don’t mind that some creators have sent ‘For Your Consideration’ letter out this year. As I’ve said people, there were a lot of great projects in 2009 – and there were several I know I had forgotten when I mad my initial draft of candidates.
This year, there seems to more participation than ever before – and that’s GREAT! But, people will still moan and complain about the final nomination list regardless.
