  1. They also took themselves out of the running for the 2012 Hugo. An admirable move that will, I hope, help SF fans find more great work like “Girl Genius”.

  2. In case anyone wonders who the other nominees were:

Fables: Witches, written by Bill Willingham; illustrated by Mark Buckingham (Vertigo)

Girl Genius, Volume 10: Agatha Heterodyne and the Guardian Muse, written by Phil and Kaja Foglio; art by Phil Foglio; colors by Cheyenne Wright (Airship Entertainment)

Grandville Mon Amour, by Bryan Talbot (Dark Horse)

Schlock Mercenary: Massively Parallel, written and illustrated by Howard Tayler; colors by Howard Tayler and Travis Walton (Hypernode)

The Unwritten, Volume 2: Inside Man, written by Mike Carey; illustrated by Peter Gross (Vertigo)

  3. so a girl being a genius is science fiction???

What guy is going to want to read about a girl genius? That’s not believable!

Well, I suppose it is admirably. But arguably they’ve left it at least a year too late. When I wrote about the first Best Graphic Story Hugo, I suggested it would be a good idea for them to take themselves out of the race for the following year. And they certainly should’ve done it last year. Nothing against their comic at all, but it doesn’t look good when the same thing keeps winning a new category.

  5. Girl Genius benefited in the Hugo balloting from the fact that the Foglios (especially Phil) have been a fixture of science fiction fandom for a very long time. Phil was persuaded, not completely gently, to withdraw from the Best Fan Artist Hugo after winning in 1977 and 1978. So it’s good that Phil has saved the award from its voters.

More and more figures have been voluntarily withdrawing from the Hugos after winning repeatedly–two of the top nominees for Best Editor, Long Form, had previously permanently withdrawn from consideration.
