Filming is already underway on Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s entry in the Marvel canon, Captain Marvel.

The film is already populated with big names like Brie Larson in the title role, Jude Law as Mar-Vell, Ben Mendelsohn as the lead bad guy (presumably a Skrull), and Samuel L. Jackson making his return as Nick Fury – and given the 90’s based setting, perhaps a younger version that still has both his eyes? Who’s to say?

And now, another likely antagonist has joined the cast as Humans’ Gemma Chan has been cast as Doctor Minerva aka Minn-Erva. A villain that, in the comics, has plagued both iterations of Captain Marvel – stretching all the way back to the fiftieth issue of the original run of Captain Marvel by Scott Edelman and the great Al Milgrom. It’s a comic with a mating plotline that will probably be reserved to the ash heap of history.

On the other hand, as a Kree geneticist, she’d make one heck of a fearsome partner with these Skrulls. Could the Super Skrull be far behind? While we don’t know a whole lot about the plot of the film, Carol’s DNA in comics canon fuses with an alien’s thanks to an accident…perhaps Doctor Minerva will play some role in just how Captain Marvel gets those wonderful powers.

Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters on March 8, 2019.

  1. I’m not a huge Marvel fan, so I don’t have a ton of knowledge about the Captain Marvel mythos. I am a huge Shazam/Captain Marvel fan, though. Wasn’t there a Shazam villain in the 1940s called Aunt Minerva? When Marvel ripped off the Captain Marvel name, did they create their own versions of the old Fawcett villains too?

  2. Just saw the CBR piece on Minerva which had a few more appearances, and I did/do own comics with her: Quasar #10, and then #31 during Op Galactic Storm. Ah, brings back memories
