So I don’t actually know if the new Wonder Woman movie is actually called Wonder Woman 1984, or Wonder Woman 84 or just Wonder Woman 2…but Geoff Johns, Patty Jenkins, and now Gal Gadot have all tweeted about Wonder Woman 1984, so I’m going to run with that…and thanks to Gadot’s feed, we now have our first look at our heroine during that tumultuous time.

Dallas! Excess! SMPTE color bars! It’s definitely very 80’s and now I’m excited for the next season of GLOW.

Wonder Woman 1984 just began filming over in our nation’s capital, and while plot details are pretty slim to come by right now, we know Diana will be facing off with the Cheetah played by Kristen Wiig, and Pedro Pascal has joined the cast too. And there are rumors that Chris Pine is still floating about…probably in some flashback/vision/ghost kind of capacity if I had to guess, but hey…maybe he can play his own descendant or something! Perhaps Steve Trevor had a family back home that he just decided to not tell Diana about…ehh, probably too scummy for one of these movies.

Oh wait…nevermind, per Patty Jenkins literally just as I was typing this:

The Pine is back, baby! Son? Time travel? Purple rays? A gift from the Amazons to their favorite daughter? Who knows?

Wonder Woman 1984 hits theaters on November 1, 2019

  1. “Tumultuous time”? Reagan re-elected, the L.A. Olympics, peace and prosperity, and yuppies on Wall Street …

As someone who was alive and old enough to vote in ’84, I can tell you that pop culture aside, it was a dreary, boring, 12-month snooze. I assume Jenkins will toss in a Cold War plot a la Watchmen (except that we know WWIII didn’t happen, so not much suspense). I hope this isn’t another wallow in Gen X nostalgia, like Ready Player One.

Maybe the movie should be set 2 years ahead, in 1986, so Diana could deal with the Iran-Contra scandal and arch-villain Oliver North. Of course, a movie like that would piss off a lot of people.

  2. George, I’m older than you think I am, I’m sad to say (yet, I’ll take that compliment, lol). But yeah, I probably had 1986 in my head when I wrote that part.

  3. There was a furor over Madonna’s performance of “Like a Virgin” at the 1984 MTV Awards. That was about as tumultuous as it got.
