Remember those Archie announced for release in the Kickstarter from last May? The publisher is finally making good on the promise to roll out one those titles with the upcoming launch of Betty & Veronica #1. Artist and comics veteran Adam Hughes (Justice League) is writing and drawing the series. The new comic premieres July 20th. The story was announced this morning via Vulture with brand new art and a press released from the publisher. The first issue is a thick 32-pages from Hughes.
In an interview with Vulture, Hughes explained why readers would be interested in reading about Betty and Veronica outside of the main Archie comics title: It’s good to have a book where it’s just about them, where the boys are just background characters. He explained further “I want my Betty & Veronica to be timely and relevant, but not dated in 10 years.” Finally, Hughes clarified that he is “Team Betty” but stated that Veronica Lodge is ” delicious good fun to write. Hughes further explained that the series will pit Betty and Veronica against each other.
Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Cooper first appeared in December, 1941’s Pep Comics #22 drawn by Bob Montana. Veronica Lodge first appeared after Betty in Pep Comics #26 at April, 1942 by none-other-than Bob Montana. The two shared a comic book, Archie’s Girls Betty and Veronica that started in 1950 and ran for 347 issues into 1987.
CBR shared the full roster of variants from Chip Zdarsky (Sex Criminals), Stephanie Buscema (My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), Veronica Fish (Howard the Duck), Cliff Chiang (Wonder Woman), and Francesco Francavilla (Afterlife with Archie) as well as a the solicitation from the comic book.
