Imagine a world in which South American Natives, Africans and Europeans joined forces and freed the New World from the tyrannies of the Old. Well, Brazilian cartoonist David Jesus Vignolli did just that, crafting an alternative history in his new graphic novel, which will be released in August 2019. And now, The Beat has an exclusive look at the graphic novel’s gorgeous cover and art.

New World is set in the sixteenth century around the time of the European discovery of America. The story is told from the viewpoint of a South American Native girl named Iracema. The arrival of the new invaders creates problems for those already living on the land, causing Iracema to seek vengeance. Iracema’s journey soon crosses paths with an enslaved African musician and a Portuguese sailor. They, too, seek freedom and redemption. Together they must learn to overcome their differences in order to fight against the dark forces at play.

New World is the the second title of Vignolli’s that BOOM! Studios’ Archaia imprint will publish, following A Girl in the Himalayas. Archaia’s titles include: the Eisner Award-winning Mouse Guard series by David Petersen; Rust by Royden Lepp; Bolivar by Sean Rubin; Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramon K. Perez;About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau; and Waves by Ingrid Chabbert. Archaia has also licensed two Jim Henson series: The Power of the Dark Crystal and Labyrinth: Coronation.

“David James Vignolli weaves a powerful tale of people coming together in the face of evil the way only someone with his unique perspective and boundless imagination could,” said BOOM! Studios Editor Cameron Chittock. “The blend of history, fantasy, and undeniable heart in New World are further proof that Vignolli is a special voice in the comics medium.”
