A full 17 years after plans were first announced to adapt Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl book series for film, Disney has finally released the first teaser trailer for this Kenneth Branagh-directed fantasy. The film appears to be in line with the visual spectacle of other recent Disney epics, like the studio’s adaptation of Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle In Time and even The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Artemis Fowl follows 12 year-old titular genius Artemis Fowl II (played by Ferdia Shaw), a descendant of a long line of criminal masterminds, as he struggles against a powerful, hidden race of fairies who may be responsible for the disappearance of his father. The film also stars Dame Judi Dench as Commander Root, Lara McDonnell as Captain Holly Short, Tamara Smart as Juliet Butler, Nonzo Anozie as Domovoi Butler, and Josh Gad as Mutch Diggums.

The Artemis Fowl novels, seven in total, were released between 2001 and 2012. Starting in 2007, a series of graphic novels, also written by Colfer, were released through Hyperion/Disney-Hyperion Books.

With this much material to pull from and such a powerful studio behind the film, Artemis Fowl is sure to be visually stunning. Branagh has proven time and time again that he has the directorial chops to handle epic stories. Plus, Dench’s voiceover in the teaser trailer is chilling enough all by itself to make this movie worth seeing.

Artemis Fowl features a screenplay by Irish playwright, writer and director Conor McPherson. Angus More Gordon and Matthew Jenkins are executive producing, with Branagh and Judy Hofflund co-producing.

In addition to releasing the first teaser trailer, Disney also released the first Artemis Fowl poster on Tuesday.
