  1. A question for people smarter than I:

Is Plain Janes ranknig at #86 an impressive showing for the debut Minx title? I thought so for a second considering that line is supposed to be bookstore/mass market driven, but then thought it might not be so hot.

Of course, this helps in no way settle the “do those books get into the hands of their target audience” debate, so maybe it doesn’t matter.

  2. Are we calling trade paperbacks (reprints of previously printed material) graphic novel? For marketing reasons, it makes sense, but shouldn’t we define the difference or does it matter anymore?

For example, say an artist / writer has a signing debuting their “graphic novel” and a fan of the creator shows up anticipating new original work only to find it was a reprint of a 3 issue story arc printed in a serialized monthly comic book.

This is actually more common than you think.

  3. If manga has it’s own list, why is Naruto on this one?
Anyway, I went back through the top 100 gns of each month listed on icv2 and added up what each of the top five sold. These are minimum numbers I guess, cause it’s possible something like Marvel Zombies sold like 300 copies one month and went out of print for a while and so didn’t make it onto the chart.

    Civil War: 8 months: 46 322
    Marvel Zombies HC: 8 months: 27 445
    Heroes: 2 months: 27 229
    Watchmen: 12 months: 26 112
    300: 5 months: 22 567

    And the bottom one:
Star War Clone Wars vol 8: 1 month: 6579 (this is definitely one I’d say there were continuous low level reorders)

Someone with more time/skills at getting this info out of graphs can do the rest.

Oh, and you can put this on your front page or something if you want.

  4. Man they really pulled a fast one with that heroes HC. That was pretty bad, theres going to be a lot of those floating around ebay for cheap soon enough.

  5. These are nonreturnable orders. Plain Janes may have been strongly pushed, then didn’t sell, causing other titles in the line to suffer. Check the monthly charts to see if this is true.
What is interesting is the amount of backlist.
At my B&N, we did well with Dark Tower, Heroes, LOEGbd. Absolute Sandman and The Complete Don Martin sold nicely for big ticket items.
Heidi, I know PW lists the year’s best sellers by general numbers. Can you or Calvin filter out GNs?

  6. It’s interesting how differents Fables’s TPB are between the top 100. this series sells well in both formats (monthly and Tpb)

Also the traditional Watchmen, tDKR and 300.

  7. @ Matthew
Not only Naruto, but also DeathNote, and Fruits Basket (Tokyopop and Viz) – which takes up 8 slots out of the 100. Perhaps there’s a reason they qualify for this list.

  8. It’s interesting to see the Heroes HC outsell the 300 HC. At first glance those would seem to be very similar properties. Same price, hot movie/tv tie in, both previously available in another format. Perhaps the difference was DC’s marketing clout vs Dark Horse?
