The world has been reborn.

Last month’s release of DC Universe: Rebirth #1 kicked off a new era of storytelling for the publisher.  The house that gave us Batman and Superman is looking to make up for the mistakes of the New 52 canonical reboot, reinstating old plot points that were erased from their timeline and even bringing back old versions of classic characters that had been discarded in favor of newer, “edgier” ones.

Rebirth #1 promised us character driven stories filled with more heart than fist.  Can they deliver?  Each week, Kyle Pinion and Alex Lu will dig into the Rebirth titles kicking off DC Comics’ line overhaul to find out.  This is week four of DC Reborn.

Final Thoughts

Kyle Pinion: A decent week for DC this time around with only one real stand-out (Wonder Woman), though a few titles get by with me on their aesthetic pleasures (Aquaman, Action Comics) and being fun all-around reads (The Flash). I’m happy to note that the titles that needed to improve are getting there, and there’s nothing from this week’s batch that’s skip-worthy or has nothing to recommend. A solid jack of all trades week, which is not a bad place to be and leaves me feeling pretty great about Rebirth, one month in.

I even have hope that Detective Comics is on the verge of getting over some of its humps! That’s how positive I am right now!

Alex Lu: I’d also say this is another solid week for DC’s line of Rebirth books.  There were no huge surprises this time, though I am sad to report that I did not love Greg Rucka’s and Liam Sharp’s Wonder Woman #1.  That is not on them though– purely on me.  I’d recommend that book to anyone with a solid knowledge base for the character as it is truly a masterfully crafted comic in the abstract.  It just simply isn’t the most accessible, in my opinion.

The Flash #1 improved upon its Rebirth one-shot by loosening its ties to DC Universe: Rebirth #1 and establishing a story of its own.  Action Comics also showed signs of improvement thanks to its full dedication to, well, action.

Detective Comics and Aquaman retain their status as one of my most favorite and least favorite Rebirth titles for reasons we’ve already gone over.  Hopefully we’ve inspired you to give one or more of these titles a try because I have to say, they should all be able to find their own audience– even that fishy fighter Aquaman.
