Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

Metal is in full swing this month, with the core series continuing and the tie-ins beginning with crossover issues and one-shots. So far enthusiasm is high and that’s translating into good sales for everything that Metal touches. It’s enough to paper over the sins hiding further down in the sales chart (but don’t worry; we’ll peel it back for you to peek!)

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com‘s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

2 – DARK NIGHTS: METAL ($4.99)

06/2017: The Forge #1   — 130,651           [139,088]

07/2017: The Casting #1 — 128,261 (-  7.8%)

08/2017: Metal #1       — 261,997 (+104.3%) [271,108]

09/2017: Metal #2       — 149,487 (- 44.9%)

Second issue drop-off is a bit on the steep side, but given the interest in one-snots and tie-ins to Metal that we’ll see below it looks like the crossover event will have legs and likely won’t have sales drop off a cliff. There was also a second printing of the first issue that added another 9K in sales, which is a bit surprising as you would have thought there were enough copies of that first issue floating around for everyone who wanted one to have one.

4, 5 – BATMAN ($2.99)

Batman falls back down below the 100K mark, but given the surfeit of Batman-related material coming out this month (with all the Metal titles and crossovers) I wouldn’t worry too much about the growing power of the caped crusader being on any sort of wane. (Ha—puns!)

6 – HARLEY QUINN 25th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ($4.99)

07/2014: Harley Quinn Comic Con  #1 — 64,978           [68,667]

12/2014: Harley Quinn Holiday Sp #1 — 63,465 (-  7.6%)

02/2015: Harley Quinn Valentines #1 — 68,611 (+ 19.4%) [75,747]

09/2015: Harley Quinn Road Trip  #1 — 51,135 (- 31.8%) [51,668]

04/2016: Harley & SS April Fools #1 — 75,354 (+ 45.8%)

09/2017: Harley Quinn 25th Anniv #1 — 97,211 (+ 29.1%)

—————–

2 years : + 88.1%

This is at first glance a surprising number, considering that the regular HQ series current sells about 1/3 the number of copies per issue. But in addition to being a 25th anniversary special for a popular character, there were also a good number of retailer incentive variants. Add that all up and you can see why sales on this could approach 100K.

Lenticular covers ahoy! We’ve combined sales of the lenticular and non-lenticular variants to give you, the sales chart reader, a more accurate sales chart experience!

Obviously these are good numbers for the kick-off issues of “The Oz Effect,” with the lenticular covers and the promise of answers for one of the plot lines from the Rebirth über-plot. Sales for issue #987 were even above those of the first Rebirth issue of Action (#957, with 82,884 in the fist month and 95,893 with re-orders). So even with Metal in the limelight right now, Rebirth is still getting some love.

8, 9 – METAL one-shots ($3.99)

09/2017: Batman Red Death #1      — 81,904

09/2017: Batman Murder Machine #1 — 78,202 (-  4.5%)

These are really good numbers for spin-off one-shots of a crossover series. Of course, the fact that they star ‘dark’ versions of Batman really helps—can’t go wrong with a Batman #1! Both had 2nd printings out in October

Metal tie-tin, so up go the sales!

DC is trying something a bit novel with their tie-ins in regular titles to Metal, with each month there being a mini-crossover between several titles. In September it was “The Gotham Resistance” running through issues of Teen Titans, Nightwing, and Suicide Squad (with Green Arrow finishing up in October).

A Flash series stabilizing in the low-50K range is really one of the best outcomes from Rebirth. If more Rebirth titles were able to stabilize at 20K higher than where their New 52 series ended, Rebirth would be a smash success.

Issue #31, the start of a new arc by writer James Robinson following up on some dangling New 52 Justice League plot threads, sees a slight bump. Which is fine as far as it goes, but kind of a sign that DC doesn’t really know what to do with the regular Wonder Woman title. Here’s a suggestion: make it as close to the smash-hit movie as possible! (And honestly, this storyline is about as far away from that as you can get…) This isn’t rocket science, folks.

So this sort of thing just doesn’t happen in this day and age: The first-month orders for a second issue of a limited series being significantly higher than those of the first issue. But given the over 14K copies of the second printing of that first issue that also made their way on to the September chart, it appears that retailers underestimated the demand for this series. (Hard to blame them, given DC’s recent history with limited series based on c-list characters!) And with a 3rd printing of the first issue and a 2nd printing of the second issue both on their way, it’s safe to say that DC have a modest hit on their hands.

This is the lowest sales a the regular issue a JLA series since my records begin in early 2001. I don’t hate this comic, but it’s pretty clear to me that calling Batman and His Amazing Friends a ‘Justice League’ title isn’t good for the brand.

Superwoman is ending in January, making it the first of the Rebirth series to be cancelled due to low sales. (Yes, All Star Batman is ending earlier, but though we’ve noted that its sales were kind of low for a Snyder-written Batman comic, it had sales that just about any other Rebirth title would die for, and thus one can hardly claim that sales were the cause of its demise.) Superwoman never caught on, and it doesn’t look like the doors would have stopped any time soon. Blame the bait-and-switch debut issue, or the over-saturation of the Superman family in Rebirth, or whatever else you want.

Final issue. Yes, I know that DC say this and the other Young Animal titles are going ‘on hiatus,’ and that there’s a crossover special due out in February. But even if those crossovers are wildly successful, it just doesn’t make any sense to come back with an issue #13 after several months off. If YA decide they want to come back with more Cave Carson comics, it would likely be as a six-issue mini-series with a new #1.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used. Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

Second issue drop-off is a bit on the steep side,”

I’m pretty sure issue #1 had a few exclusive store variants so that padded the total orders a bit.

  2. Astro City has been one of the finest comics since its original release and i’m bummed to see it so low on the charts. Of course, i collect it in trades so i guess i can’t talk. hopefully the trade sales keep it afloat as long as the creators want to make it

  3. Deathstroke, Green Arrow, Astro City and New Superman deserve more readers. That said, I dropped GA with the switch to monthly and price increase – despite great art from both artists and a strong over arching story I decided to let it go. Too often I would wait for issues to build up nd read them in one go, but with a higher price and slower pace I may as well trade wait. Definetly an underrated gem though.
Unless New Superman gets a stable art team again I won’t continue with it past the relaunch. I’m even regretfully putting Deathstroke on watch as despite going monthly art looked very rushed last issue. Not sure why DC thinks it’s cool to skimp on the art on it’s more expensive titles.

I was a little surprised to see Suicide Squad where it was, I actually thought it might be lower. Stories are still fun, but after launching with Jim Lee, then Jon Romita Jr, then Tony Daniel, it’s now down to a different artist of lower stature nearly every issue.

Superman will probably fall further. No clear direction in that book since #25.

I’m enjoying a lot of DC books at the moment, but more and more are losing direction and struggling to provide conisitent quality art work.

  4. Thanks for the column David! Just a tip/suggestion. Is it possible not to skip a line with every item. It just overly spaced.
I am really looking forward to seeing next months Metal and tie in issue sales, especially on the regular Rebirth series. The ones from this month had a good boost. I was going to skip both ‘4 part’ tie ins, but not much else was happening and they had good creative teams so I picked up all 8 issues.
Mister Miracle is another I am looking forward to seeing. Another reprint for both #1 and #2, and how issue 3 fares. Mister Miracle might end up out selling Amazing Spider-Man!

  5. I saw the upcoming Artgerm 50/50 variant for Supergirl #18. It features Supergirl in her old 70’s costume with the V-neck and shorts. IT LOOKS AMAZING! Should be a poster. I am literally only buying the issue for that cover :)
