dktmr_cv6_1_10-varGreetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

Sales are down again from last month, though that’s not surprising as things are still settling in from the Rebirth. Overall DC sales through Diamond N.A. are estimated at 3,508,534, down about 300K from last month but still nearly twice what they were the month before Rebirth.

This column is running late so not much time for chit-chat. I’ll refer you instead to John Jackson Miller’s “Primer: North American and UK/Europe comics sales, and why the charts keep them separate” for your sales chart edification this month.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

No one is surprised that this series is running late, are they? Doesn’t seem to have hurt sales very much though.

5, 6 - BATMAN ($2.99)

10/2011: Batman #2 -- 172,428 [198,765]

Includes freely-orderable variant (f.o.v.) covers, as do all of the Rebirth comics.

Batman has now moved into standard attrition territory. It’s obviously in good shape, and continues to be the flagship title for DC.

9 - ALL STAR BATMAN ($4.99)
10/2006: --
---------------------------------------
08/2016: All Star Batman #1 -- 318,283 (+238.5%)

10/2016: All Star Batman #3 -- 117,596 (- 22.4%)
-----------------
10 years: n.a.

Returnable and an f.o.v.; see the fine print at the end of the column.

A bit larger decrease than you’d want in a third issue, but likely still feeling the effects of its extra variant-fueled launch.

12, 13 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($2.99)
10/2011: Justice League #2 -- 196,569

No longer returnable, but still f.o.v.s. Drops are in line with what we’ve seen from other Rebirth titles when they go off of returnability.

I suspect that when the final end-of-year numbers come in, we’ll see some drop-offs for the 2nd and 3rd months of the Rebirth titles, though likely not down to the artificially-lowered numbers that Diamond provides.

Includes freely-orderable variant (f.o.v.) covers.

Issue #942 was part of the “Night of the Monster Men” crossover, though #943 was not. And thus we see that Batman family crossovers still have a positive effect in the Rebirth era.

17, 21 - FLASH ($2.99)

Settling in to standard attrition, and at a very nice level for a Flash book historically.

Those drops are, kind of big? I mean it’s still selling at twice the natural resting sales level for a Suicide Squad series, but with the movie and Jim Lee you’d think it would be doing a bit better this early in the run?

Pretty much right on par so far with the New 52 launch. So as a cautionary note, realize that series dropped to 25K by issue #30 before it was rebooted. So yes, these are good numbers for Teen Titans, but it’s still early days.

No longer returnable, but still f.o.v.s. Turns out that last month’s issue #5 (a “Night of the Monster Men” crossover issue) was indeed returnable, despite not having an [*] on the chart. So I’ve gone ahead and adjusted it up 10%, making it a different-but-still-wrong-though-hopefully-not-as-wrong number.

Issue #6 this month is also a “Night of the Monster Men” crossover issue, though post crossover Nightwing now needs to figure out its new post-Rebirth level.

Hmm. No good explanation for the big drop this month, other than it appears that retailers were a bit optimistic about sales from the previous issues and sales are returning quickly to the normal level for a Harley solo series. (We may see some actual returns for issues #3 & 4 when the end-of-year numbers come out…)

I keep figuring that at some point DC will realize that, without Geoff Johns, the Green Lantern franchise just cannot support four comics per month. 87 - WONDER WOMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ($7.99)
10/2016: Wonder Woman 75th #1 -- 36,096

Decent numbers for a $8 book, and an anthology at that. Odd that DC did one of these for Wonder Woman but so far not for any of their other characters that have hit the 75 year mark.

100 - SHADE, THE CHANGING GIRL (Young Animal) ($3.99)
10/2016: Shade #1 -- 35,289

In roughly the same situation as Cave Carson; not a super well-known property, this one drawing on a Vertigo series from the 90s, itself based on a Ditko series from the 70s.

As with Superwoman, this just doesn’t seem to be catching on. Maybe it was a mistake to expand the Superman sub-universe so aggressively?

103 - DEATH OF HAWKMAN ($3.99)
10/2006: Hawkgirl #57 -- 19,900

-----------------
5 years : - 27.2%

DC’s DCU mini-series woes continue. To make matters worse, this wasn’t even solicited under the Death of Hawkman title, but rather as a Hawkman/Adam Strange mini. Not sure why the deception. (There was a variant cover.)

115, 121 - FUTURE QUEST ($3.99)

119 - SCOOBY APOCALYPSE ($3.99)
05/2016: Scooby Apocalypse #1 -- 69,520 [77,409]
06/2016: Scooby Apocalypse #2 -- 29,812 (- 61.5%)

09/2016: Scooby Apocalypse #5 -- 26,170 (- 7.0%)
10/2016: Scooby Apocalypse #6 -- 23,781 (- 9.1%)

Things still haven’t stabilized for DC’s Hanna-Barbera revivals. Certainly Future Quest’s erratic schedule can’t be helping, though its staying pretty close to the more regular Scooby Apocalypse so I don’t think its having too much of a negative effect. (F.o.v.s all around.)

123 - RAVEN ($2.99)
09/2016: Raven #1 of 6 -- 28,374
10/2016: Raven #2 of 6 -- 20,813 (- 26.6%)

A typical second issue drop. Sales aren’t great for this DCU mini either, though there are second printings of both of the first two issues scheduled for December, so it appears that demand was under-estimated in some quarters.

128 - MIDNIGHTER AND APOLLO ($3.99)
10/2015: Midnighter #5 -- 13,235 (- 8.3%)

133 - THE LOST BOYS (Vertigo) ($3.99)
10/2016: Lost Boys #1 of 6 -- 19,812

What exactly possessed Vertigo to do a miniseries based on a nearly thirty-years-old Joel Schumacher movie? We may never know, but it did debut higher than most other recent Vertigo series, so that’s something of a win for the beleaguered imprint.

147 - EARTH 2: SOCIETY ($2.99)

10/2016: Southland #1 of 6 -- 16,264 (+152.3%)

Really? A Vigilante mini-series? I guess because the character is appearing on the Arrow TV series? The results are predictable, as it debuts even lower than the previous Vigilante series did (18,233 in December 2008), and you can see above how that ended up.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Image is not a normal comics publisher, and the typical metrics for sales success may not apply. For many titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the National Wild Turkey Federation, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there if you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. “No one is surprised that this series is running late, are they? Doesn’t seem to have hurt sales very much though.”

So, please always remember that sales charts are reactive, not predictive! PARTICULARLY in a post-FOC world where the window of orders-to-sales is just three weeks. The order for DK3 #6 is just the market saying “Hey! We sold 133,642 copies of *issue number five*” Actually, a tiny less, probably, because most retailers probably aren’t ordering this title to have 100% sell-through.

But, IN NO WAY is that at all a reflection of how CONSUMERS will respond to the lateness. You’ll know THAT from the orders of DK #7. Because those orders will be “Hey! This is how many we sold of issue six”

This is especially true on a Very Late comic like this one.

  2. “Batman has now moved into standard attrition territory.”

PS, what I said about DK and FOC works *exactly in reverse* for BATMAN and all of the other Rebirth bi-weekly comics — we have a harder time understanding how consumers are consuming because we’re multiple issues behind with good sales data. I’m pretty confident that for the average retailer, the sales data for ordering issue #9 (126k copies bought) is derived from the Actual Sales (or “actual sales”, your call!) of issue #6 (138k copies bought) — that’s closer to a 9% differential, rather than “standard attrition” in terms of incoming stock versus outgoing sales…. and I think that this might be making Rebirth significantly less successful for many stores ordering the books than the numbers may express on the surface.

  3. A shame to see Flintstones sales dropping. That is one fascinating comic, one that is continually surprisingly coherent, smart and savvy. I hope it finds its readers before low sales figures force it to be ushered away from The Great Monthly Comic Roulette table/ buffet, mumbling about the Paleo Diet…

  4. Agreed. Flintstones is my favorite comic DC is publishing right now — and on the whole, I think the company is doing better than it has in years. But Flintstones in particular is consistently great.
