Most significantly, October 2013 was the month after the month in which DC mounted its most aggressive and focussed attempt yet to single-handedly destroy the comics market, by shipping millions of random comics to retailers who had not ordered them. Not surprisingly, sales snapped back to more regular levels as a result.Second-most significantly, October 2013 was the month in which a new Sandman miniseries by sales magnet Neil Gaiman debuted to give Vertigo a much-needed boost.

And so it did: In the 128 months since March 2003 that we’ve got data on, Vertigo’s average new-comic-book sales have never been higher, rising to an estimated 22,228 units. Similarly, Vertigo’s total unit and dollar sales set new records for that period: With an estimated 266,738 total units sold, October 2013 is a solid 46,000 ahead of the previous high-water mark, and total dollar sales for the first time cracked the $1 million barrier with an estimated $1.1 million. Which is an especially big deal, because the previous record month, March 2010, had only managed an estimated $681,000 — and it had needed 19 new books to do so, as opposed to October 2013’s 12.

See below for the details and, as usual, please consider the small print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com‘s estimates can be found here.

This was the first issue whose sales were not reduced on the chart (by Diamond) and subsequently adjusted (by me) due to being returnable, so it’s quite possible that the drop here is misleading. Since Diamond doesn’t provide accurate information for returnable titles, we can only guess. The picture should become clearer in the next few months, though.

Publishing crossover tie-in books without a crossover to tie in with, meanwhile, yields less-than-stellar effects. Perhaps it would pay off to procure the “Civil War” license from Marvel, just for a couple of issues.

Overall, this makes 11 “New 52” books below the 20K mark right now, only four of which have an official ending date yet. More are about to follow, indubitably.

Three years after the last one concluded, an all-new All-Ages Batman title launches.

(Beware the Batman was made returnable by DC and had its numbers reduced on the chart by Diamond, before I re-adjusted them for the column. The same applies to The Sandman: Overture, Hinterkind, Coffin Hill and Trillium. At best, figures will be more accurate as a result; at worst, they’ll be a different kind of wrong from what Diamond provides. Either way, take these with a grain of salt.)

Two new Vertigo launches with promising numbers. The imprint has seen a lot worse in recent years. That said, these were both returnable, there was a big spotlight on Vertigo in October, and it’s rarely a good sign when two completely different books are being ordered at pretty much the same (token?) level by retailers just because they happen to be part of a particular imprint or initiative — because that suggests that there’s no actual, substantial demand to fall back on once the push is over. But we’ll see.

Disclaimers, et cetera

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com‘s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in parenthesis behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

For a more lyrical approach to discussing sales figures that covers all the essentials in a more condensed, less tedious fashion, finally, go right here.

  1. 151 – BEWARE THE BATMAN (All-Ages)
The last issue of The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold (#16) came out in April 2012. So a year-and-a-half.

13 – JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA
    That’s a nasty drop from #22 to #24!

Aside from Teen Titans, all titles which were halted for Villains month saw drops when the regular series resumed.

I know you’re busy, but could we see a lenticular .1 sales chart analyzing the effects of that “skip month”? How much money did DC make in September, and how much did they lose from August to October on the New 52?

  2. Why the huge drop for All-Star Western, you ask?

    Simple.

Going from 40 pages to 32 pages with no decrease in price equals readers leaving in droves.

  3. Villain’s Month seems to have really hurt all the Justice League titles or I’m missing something else here?

  4. “Snyder.”

But I’ve heard a ton of people say they buy Batman for Capullo. Haven’t heard anyone say they buy it just for Snyder. I can’t stand his pedantic writing, but I can admit that he’s a sales draw. Sure. But to leave out Capullo’s name is silly.

  5. Just a heads up: currently the headline for this article on the home page lacks the customary jump-link and instead prints the entire text of the article.

  6. Apparently Green Team is still being published but missed the chart.

What on Earth is keeping The Movement from cancellation?

  7. So, out of 52 books, ONE saw an increase in sales that can be attributed to this stunt? *slow clapping*

Someone at DC should also note that comics supposedly intended to introduce readers to Superman and Batman’s rogues’ galleries FAILED to hold those readers’ interest, across the board.

  8. Unfortunately, these sales figures are entirely rational.

Mangled storylines and inconsistent artwork are the primary reasons that I have abandoned more than half of the new 52 titles. Who can read such bad stuff?

  9. On a slightly more positive note, I am really adoring Hinterkind. Nice high-fantasy/post-apocalypic/survivalist smash up with a couple of good mystery threads running through it. Worth a look, imo.

  10. Torsten: “The last issue of The All-New Batman: The Brave and the Bold (#16) came out in April 2012. So a year-and-a-half.”

Doggone it, I knew I missed one! Thanks for the pointer.

  11. @Torsten Adair, sales drop every month for majority of DC books and this month’s drop don’t seam to be any bigger than any others.

@wwd, just before villains month all JL titles were locked into Trinity War crossover and got huge sales boost, especially JLA and JLD. Once it ended sales dropped down, naturally.

@Michael P, I doubt that anyone expected to see villains month to increase sales of ANY book so its probably “breaking expectations” at this point.

  12. It’s sad to see that the success of the CW’s ARROW has done nothing to help sales of Green Arrow, or Arrow…..(sigh)

  13. ” … October 2013 was the month after the month in which DC mounted its most aggressive and focussed attempt yet to single-handedly destroy the comics market …”

You’re becoming a parody of yourself as this point. That’s the single most stupid sentence I’ve seen on a non-BleedingCool blog in a long time.

  14. “I’m sure there’s a perfectly good reason why DC hasn’t cancelled this book yet.”
I guess they’re just scared. If DC cancel series with black lead all those scary PC people start shitting all over Beat about how much DC hates minories.

“What on Earth is keeping The Movement from cancellation?”
I guess they’re just scared. If DC cancel series written by Gail Simone all those scary PC people start shitting all over Beat about how much DC hates women.

  15. It’s really sad to see all the niche books dying a slow death. Honestly, all DC will have in a few years are Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman/Justice League titles. It keeps happening every time a mass slaughtering occurs. Phantom Stranger has improved massively with the new writer, and the art is great. No one is buying it. Swamp Thing’s writer has competely re-invigorated that title, no one is buying it. Poor Animal Man got cancelled, and it was a nice little book! No one is buying it. Justice League Dark fails to really hit any sales highs. Green Arrow, who’s new creative team has really helped to jump start that book, is losing readers. No one is buying it. It makes me sad.

  16. Here’s something to consider in the months to come:
    #22 = regular issue
    #23 = Villains month (skip)
    #24 = regular issue
#25 = Batman Year Zero tie-in (for most of the major New 52 titles)
    #26 = regular issue?

This really gets annoying when it interrupts story arcs, like the one in Batgirl.
One might as well wait for the trade.

  17. Looks like the villains month books were successful in helping DC heroes continue to lose sales. Pretty ironic.

  18. @Torsten Adair

Actually, #23 is a regular issue too. The Villains month issues were 23.1, 23.2, etc.

And while it might be annoying to have the Zero Year tie-ins, I believe many or most of them are by the regular authors, so it’s not like they are in left field in comparison with the main story.

  19. @vernon wiley

Villains month was very successful in generating revenue to make up for the inevitable loss of sales that happens every month, thus allowing what little niche and experimentation DC can afford to do last a little longer.

  20. All Star Western is a great book, but I can understand that some people might not be into Moritat’s sometimes uneven art.

He-man book is a really good looking book, almost abstract in art style, but the stories are insipid and juvenile, which is befuddling because the art style is not kid friendly, but the story does its best to be so.

Hinterkind is a good new book, solid and I like where its going. Coffin Hill’s story is good, but needs a scratchier, darker artist, the glossy pretty-ness from the current artist puts me off.

Swamp Thing and Animal Man are good looking books, but the stories are uneven, sometimes good, sometimes dreadful.

Constantine is a good book when it only partially interacts with the rest of the DCU.

  21. “I guess they’re just scared. If DC cancel series with black lead all those scary PC people start shitting all over Beat about how much DC hates minories.”

If that was the case, wouldn’t Static Shock and Voodoo be on issue 26 by now?

  22. Trillium was a nice surprise for me. It’s replace Batman and Robin as a monthly book. I love Gleason’s art but that book’s been so bland lately there’s little for him to draw. I’d like to see Swamp Thing do better as it has fantastic art (and the annual was really good) but it’s an odd book. I find myself buying one issue and enjoying it but being lukewarm about the next. I knew Rotworld had really hurt it and Animal Man but it looks like the downward trajectory it started is leading to the death of both those books.

  23. DC need to follow the Marvel method of a sales push and relaunch a few titles (but don’t go as overboard as them!). Green Arrow definitely would of saw much higher numbers when Lemire took over if it was a new #1 – it is still doing 5k better with him on board after 6 months, but more people should be reading it. :-)

But I can understand a lot of their other books seeing major drops. They are either really shit, of part of a crossover that no one wants to read about. I’m down to about 5 titles.

  24. SAIPAman:

You made a good point, and the decline in All-Star Western could be a combination of both our reasons. I thought the “Jonah in Modern Times” storyline started off well, but by now, it’s more than ran its course, in my opinion. Once Constantine-lite shows up, its time to finish up the story (sorry, but I have a hard time with the DCNU Constantine, as I assume most readers of his Vertigo series do). I’m starting to wonder though, is DC’s going to keep Jonah in the present permanently?

  25. At this point in time, DC has cancelled 24 of the 52 original “new 52 titles”, just a shade under half. The replacement titles haven’t exactly been a constant barrage of home runs, either, with Earth 2 being far and away the best of the bunch. A lot of the cancelled books were great reads, and missed by at least myself.

Looking back in hindsight, one thing I think DC could have done differently is this: Who said all of the new 52 books HAD to be ongoings? The hook of the event was that DC would publish 52 DCNU books per month. Why couldn’t at least some of them been limited series—creating a few “rotating slots” in the 52 book quota? Personally, I loved Omac, but who among us didn’t at least figure from the start that it would be among the fist casulaties? And look at the sales of the books that were actually promoted as “Limited Series” during the first several months of the event. My Greatest Adventure, Night Force, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents, Legion Secret Origin, ect. None were listed as being part of the new 52, and sales were terrible.

It’s not too late for DC to rectify this. Open up a few of those new 52 slots for the inclusion of limited series featuring characters and/or concepts that otherwise wouldn’t support an ongoing. Deadman, Man-Bat, Metal Men, the list goes on and on. Sure, these minis might not (and probably won’t) have the sales figures of Batman or Justice League, but inclusion into the new 52 proper might garner better sales than a book just thrown out there to swim on its own whine holding a giant anchor.

  26. Damn all that I have left at DC thanks to Animal Man’s cancellation is GL: New Guardians, Wonder Woman, Earth-2, Batman, Detective and Nightwing. Not impressive showing for DC at all. I doubt by the end of 2014 they will publish anything but a GL book and then Batman and Superman at the current sales burn out of the non-vertigo books.
