Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

This month, nearly all of the comics with freely-orderable variants (Flash 75th anniversary) saw a drop of 3-4K. We’ve seen drops on these in the past months, but they were so uniform this month that I thought that maybe something else was going on. But the more I looked at it, I became convinced that it was the case the retailers as a whole just dropped their orders on these.

Why? Likely a combination of figuring that The Flash wasn’t as big of a draw as the past cover themes (LEGO and Darwyn Cooke in the recent two months); retailers adjusting orders as a whole based on sales history, not necessarily ordering less of the variants but ordering less of the regular covers; and retailers adjusting down their orders this month to be able to order massive quantities of Marvel Star Wars #1 to get those incentive variants.

For a high selling title like Batman this 3-4K drop fits in with expected standard attrition, but for the lower-selling titles the drop can be a rather significant percentage drop.

The lone title with a freely-orderable variant that doesn’t see this drop is Batgirl, which sees a slight boost. The logical conclusion here is that the variant drop was cancelled out by a growth in readership based on the new direction.

(But I suspect that for February numbers we’ll see a bit of a rebound, as that month’s freely-orderable variant theme is the ever-popular Harley Quinn.)

As a result of the above, combined with a non-Sandman month for Vertigo, average sales for DC dropped in the three tracked categories (DCU, Vertigo, and DC as a whole) to their lowest levels since the New 52 began in September 2011.

But never fear, Divergence is coming!

In June, post-Convergence, DC is dropping the New 52 branding and launching an impressive number of new series: 24 in total, including relaunches, min-series, and new ongoing series. While a few of these new series clearly fit in with the New 52 ethos (I’m looking at you, Doomed…) many show a wider variety of styles, such as Bat-Mite, Bizarro, Black Canary, and Prez; and a lesser grip of continuity. It’s the largest number of new titles in a month since the New 52. It is a bit worrisome that they’ll be launching so many at once; it will be very hard to capture lightning in the bottle a second time. But I believe that DC is offering retailers favorable incentives to up their orders, and the new books will be promoted with both their Free Comic Book Day offering and previews in May’s Convergence books.

Most importunity, as a whole these new books look to be going after a wide variety of different readers, as DC is starting to make steps to expand out from what they previously saw as their core audience. Many (heck, likely most) of these new titles likely won’t be huge sellers, but if DC can establish a solid and consistent midlist because all of their titles aren’t competing for the same type of customer, that will be good for their line overall.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron.

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Batman slips down to #2 this month under the onslaught that was the million-selling Star Wars #1. The 3K drop from December doesn’t look as bad percentage wise for Batman as it does for the books lower down on the chart.

There won’t be much to say this month for a lot of the DCU titles; that across-the-board 3-4K drop is masking any other effects that might be otherwise apparent.

While it is the secondary Batman title, its sales are less than half of Batman and presumably one would hope for better. The current team of Buccelato & Manapul are sticking around post-Convergence.

The tertiary Batman title will be ending in March, to be relaunched as a solo Robin title in Divergence. Certainly it’s not sales alone that is driving this change, so its likely a combination of story reasons and a desire to have fewer books that headline Batman (even while expanding the Batman line as a whole).

An increase of just 36 copies isn’t very much, but in a month when most other DCU titles are seeing sizable decreases that is definitely good news for the new direction on Batgirl. I would also expect that there is reorder activity (and a second printing for #35) that are significant but not enough to appear above the #300 level of the Diamond chart.

Wonder Woman is the top-selling DC book this month that isn’t related to Batman (or feature, as is the case with Justice League), though it should be noted that Batman does make a guest appearance in this issue.

Drops about 3.5K, which is right in line with the 3-4K drop we’re seeing in this months titles, but also is in line with a typical third issue drop (as it’s the third issue of the new direction & creative team). Is one effect masking the other?

Drop below 40K for the first time since back in 2004, when Kyle Raynor starred in the book.

Writer Venditti is sticking around post-Convergence, with Billy Tan coming on as artist.

36 - THE MULTIVERSITY ($7.99)
08/2014: The Multiversity #1 -- 90,551
09/2014: SoS-H: CotC-W #1 -- 65,022 (- 28.2%)

01/2015: Guidebook #1 -- 38,672 (- 19.0%)
-----------------
Since #1: - 57.3%

That’s a hefty drop, but not surprising given that this was an over-sized $8 issue. It may have been under ordered, as retailers and readers may not have been aware that there was a full comic story (featuring not just one but two Batmans) in addition to the guidebook pages. (Of course I’ve been thinking that all of the Multiversity issues have been under ordered, so I’m maybe not the best judge here…)

Flash drops less than 2K copies this month, which is better than the 3-4K drops that other titles are seeing. Maybe because the variant this month was a Flash variant? Or an effect of the television show?

48 - ACTION COMICS ($3.99)
01/2005: Action Comics #823 -- 36,638

Here’s a fun (and likely useless) fact: In January 2014 Action Comics was ranked #48 on the Diamond chart, this same as it is this month (though selling about 1K fewer copies).

Pak & Kuder are staying on post-Convergence.

52 - DEATHSTROKE ($2.99)
01/2012: Deathstroke #5 -- 23,872

-----------------
2 years : +158.7%
Since #1: - 38.9%

Appears to have settled in to standard attrition, right on schedule.

Deathstroke has had variants, but none of the freely-orderable ones since its first issue, leading credence to my supposition that whatever is going on with the big drops this month has something to do with the freely-orderable variants.

Settling in the lower 30K range. So far keeping pace with how the previous series tracked.

Another stiff 3K drop due to whatever is going on with the freely-orderable variants.

It’s too bad that DC didn’t wait to relaunch this post-Convergence, as this is a title that could have really benefitted from the Divergence approach.

153 - FABLES: THE WOLF AMONG US (Vertigo) (Digital-First) ($3.99)
01/2015: Fables: TWAU #1 -- 13,620

The first Vertigo digital-first title, and a tie-in to a video game. The top-selling Vertigo title of the month. Retailers seem to have ordered this at almost exactly the same level as the mother title, which would seem to be a wise thing to do. It remains to be seen if digital-first Vertigo titles are given the same amount of sales slack as their print-first cousins.

Another month of standard attrition.

175 - EFFIGY (Vertigo) ($2.99)
12/2014: Effigy #1 -- 11,656

Returnable, so adjusted up 10% from the reported numbers (see the disclaimers at the end of this column for why we make this adjustment).

Writer Tim Seeley has done some work for DC (including Grayson), but this is his first creator-owned work for Vertigo. His Revival, over at Image, sold around 8K in January, but that was for its 27th issue. If Effigy falls off in the predictable percentage pattern for its first few issues, it won’t be long before Effigy is below it.

172 - TRINITY OF SIN ($2.99)
10/2014: Trinity of Sin #1 -- 22,683
11/2014: Trinity of Sin #2 -- 15,097 (- 33.4%)

Since #1: - 51.4%

Ending in March.

173 - THE FLASH: SEASON ZERO (Digital-First) ($2.99)
10/2014: Flash Season 0 #1 -- 23,501

01/2015: Flash Season 0 #4 -- 10,806 (- 11.8%)
----------------
Since #1: - 47.9%

If this rate continues it’ll be under 10K fairly soon (like, next month…) I suspect that corporate television interests will keep this going as a digital comic, even if print sales slide.

177 - FAIREST (Vertigo) ($2.99)

Final issue (though the story is continued in the previously-released Fairest OGN), and the slight boost keeps it above the 10K line.

186 - ARROW: SEASON 2.5 (Digital-First) ($2.99)
01/2013: Arrow #3 -- 13,090

10/2014: Arrow Season 2.5 #1 -- 17,364 (+113.1%)

12/2014: Wolf Moon #1 of 6 -- 15,865

Returnable, so adjusted up 10% from the reported numbers (see the disclaimers at the end of this column for why we make this adjustment).

No matter how you look at it, that’s an unhealthy drop.

At this level, even small drops in the number of copies make for large percentage drops.

225 - KLARION ($2.99)
10/2014: Klarion #1 -- 20,870 (- 28.0%)
11/2014: Klarion #2 -- 11,413 (- 45.3%)

----------------
Since #1: - 67.5%

Tracking lower than The Green Team did; The Green Team slid to around 4300 by its final issue. But Klarion will end in March after just six issues, so on the bright side this probably won’t end up being the worst-selling New 52 title.

This was the first issue of SDTU that wasn’t returnable. It featured the Jetsons, in a story kind of continues from the previous issue’s Flintstones pairing. Given how steady the title was back when the Scooby Gang was teaming up with super-heroes, they may want to go back to that approach.

(Of course, if they were to do a joint crossover with Dark Horse and team-up with the animated version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, that might just break the Internet. Or at least Tumblr…)

Returnable, and adjusted accordingly.

These sales are pretty much what we’ve come to expect from the recent slate of Vertigo limited series. Which is why the line is in desperate need of a makeover (see last month’s column…)

243 - THE UNWRITTEN V2 APOCALYPSE (Vertigo) ($3.99)

A surprisingly somewhat big percentage drop for the final issue on a title that had been ordered fairly steady the past few issues. I mean, who gets all the way to nearly the end and then doesn’t get the final issue?

Anyway, I hope that people eventually discover this in the trades. It took a while early on to solidify into what it was, but once it got there it turned out to be an engaging comic with depth, about the nature of narrative.

245 - STAR-SPANGLED WAR STORIES FEAT GI ZOMBIE ($2.99)
07/2014: SSWS GI Zombie #1 -- 18,762
08/2014: SSWS GI Zombie #2 -- 11,724 (- 37.5%)

01/2015: SSWS GI Zombie #6 -- 5,866 (- 18.2%)
-----------------
6 months: - 61.8%
Since #1: - 61.8%

This, however, may end up being the poorest-selling New 52 comic if it continues to fall at this rate. Which is a shame because this comic is much much better than its sales level would suggest.

So FBP missed the Top 300 chart in December, and I missed it as well and didn't even mention it.

(I checked, and Coffin Hill isn't on the January chart because it didn't ship an issue in January.)

Not returnable, unlike previous issues from early in 2014 when it was making the chart. One of DC's most consistent sellers (one assumes); it's just the floor of the chart that keeps moving around.

In fact, it would appear that for the first time in a long time every comic that DC published in January made the Top 300 (excepting for 2nd printings, reorders, promo-price items, etc.)

---The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com's estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it's a "month-to-month" column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book's initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book's initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. "[36,599]"). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it's a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don't tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo's collection sales, go right here.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300/400 chart in that month. In those cases, it's assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300/400 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.
Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the National Weather Service, or my former neighbor's dog Miles.

  1. A second printing of the Multiversity Guidebook is coming out either this week or next week, so it does look like retailers underestimated demand.

  2. Just *how* is Justice League 3000 getting a relaunch? It’s pretty clear from these figures that the introduction of Booster and Beetle has done nothing to arrest the alarming slide in these numbers, despite all the assumptions that the bwah-ha-ha audience would flock to the book and turn the sales around. Surely time for DC to bite the bullet and try a relaunch of the Legion again?

  3. Nobody seems to give a care in large enough numbers to patronize DC outside of their Batman/JL/Superman/GL/WW fix. And even then it seems if stretched too thin, those properties can wear out their welcome.

It has been entertaining to see the market change and a delicate balance that DC seemed to uncover/disturb with their grand New52 initiative. It seems like it was frontloaded with a lot of hype and excitement but the bottom dropped out relatively quickly on things other than their main stable of characters.

Speaking for myself, DC seemed to get too cute with alterations and my affinity for the gateway-characters was lost I didn’t see much reason to delve beyond the surface (for instance, if I don’t like this version of Superman which was my entry point into the universe, I couldn’t see myself giving something like Green Team a chance.)

For me, I’ve managed to scratch the itches DC used to scratch for me with Image (Vertigo), and Valiant/Marvel (DCU). DC is so far off my radar now they have to work doubly hard to get my attention and at this point it’s easier to just steer clear of getting involved with DC. I honestly can’t verbalize what DC could do specifically to get me back.

  4. I agree with your observations about Star Spangled War Stories featuring GI Zombie. I love that book – and don’t think I’m even “supposed to be” reading it!

  5. Hi Dave – thanks for running the numbers. Always a great read. Just a couple of quick corrections in the GL write up:
    1) Kyle Rayner, not Raynor
    2) Billy Tan has been drawing the book for a while now.

  6. Has Hinterkind definitely been cancelled? I wouldn’t be surprised, but I hadn’t seen that announced.

I’m really disappointed to see Gotham Academy and Gotham by Midnight in such sales freefalls. GA has had a lot of critical success, and both books are a really interesting take on the Batman setting. Very different styles and very different looks compared to most of the nu52. These are both examples of the sort of approach DC is heading for with the June relaunch but if these two tank quickly, I’m worried about what may happen.

  7. I was shocked by The Unwritten’s final numbers. David is correct, you would think people would stick around and pick up the final issue. Overall, The Unwritten was a good title that lost its way for a while (I my opinion), but managed to right the ship in its final act.

I know that many retailers feel like January is a dead month. People don’t have or want to spend much money right after the holidays. I wonder if retailers were cutting their orders on titles so that could spend their resources on Star Wars?
