Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.

DC moved a total of 2.66 million comics through Diamond-NA in February over 82 different titles, down about 200K from the previous month (on two fewer titles), and more than 750K more than February 2016.

Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!

Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

(Note that the percentage comparisons are now done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

Yes, I know your look at the February Top 300 shows that Batman was DC’s top seller for February, but once you adjust for returnability (see the fine print at the end of the column for why we do this) JLA #1 takes the top spot.

Last month’s disappointing Rebirth specials didn’t look too promising, but it appears they did not harm the debut of the series proper.

This marks the first time since the start of the New 52 nearly five and a half years ago that an issue of Batman has not sold over 100K on the Diamond North America sales chart. That’s a remarkable sales run that is unmatched in the modern era, but sadly it is now over. Granted that once additional reorders and whatnot are eventually figured in it could likely end up over 100K. But the sales trajectory on Batman is, like the rest of Rebirth, downward, so we’re likely to see more sub-100K issues in the near future. (Though with “The Button” crossover starting in April we’re likely to see an upswing soon, for a couple of issues at least…)

And for a bit of perspective, look at the sales of Batman #600 fifteen years ago. One might expect sales to be elevated for a big anniversary issue (and they were; issue #601 dropped back down to 48K) but they pale in comparison to a run-of-the-mill Batman issue from today. It’s now Batman’s world, and the rest of us are just living in it.

(Okay, it’s really Raina Telgemeier’s world…)

5 - SUPER SONS ($2.99)
02/2017: Super Sons #1 -- 99,380

Returnable, so adjusted up 10% from what the Diamond-reported numbers.

The other big debut this month, Super Sons, starring the sons of Superman and Batman (Jon “Superboy” Kent and Damien “Robin” Wayne) comes in just shy of 100K once returnability is factored in. It’s a good debut, but recall that Supergirl, Superwoman, and New Super-Man all debuted even higher, and now they’re not doing so hot. So we’ll take a wait-and-see on this before declaring Super Sons a runaway success (though a second printing of the first issue in March is a good sign).

7 - ALL STAR BATMAN ($4.99)
02/2007: --
---------------------------------------
08/2016: All Star Batman #1 -- 318,283 (+238.5%)
09/2016: All Star Batman #2 -- 151,523 (- 52.4%)
10/2016: All Star Batman #3 -- 117,596 (- 22.4%)
11/2016: All Star Batman #4 -- 99,064 (- 15.8%)
12/2016: All Star Batman #5 -- 87,422 (- 11.8%)
01/2017: All Star Batman #6 -- 84,296 (- 3.8%)
02/2017: All Star Batman #7 -- 77,096 (- 8.5%)
-----------------
10 years: n.a.

ASB kicks off this month’s not-so-great trend of accelerating percentage drops, which we’ll see across a good number of Rebirth titles. If I were to speculate as to why, it would be that retailers were cutting back more than usual to afford the JLA and Super Sons debuts.

10, 11 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($2.99)

The New 52 Batwoman debuted with first-month sales of 72K, but eventually editorial mismanagement drove away both the creators and readers until Batwoman because the poster child for how to ruin a critically-acclaimed series. Now Batwoman is back in the Rebirth era, spinning out of her starring role in Detective Comics; let’s see if DC have learned their lesson…

23 - THE WILD STORM ($3.99)
02/2017: The Wild Storm #1 -- 54,442

Returnable, so adjusted up 10% from what the Diamond-reported numbers. Plenty of variant covers too.

What to do with the new Wildstorm title in the end-of-column summaries? The previous management of this column used to track Wildstorm separately (like Vertigo) until its demise at the end of 2010. And while this new Wildstorm line will eventually expand out into at least four titles, it’s going to look pretty silly for the time being as a line of just one title.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.

Image is not a normal comics publisher, and the typical metrics for sales success may not apply. For many titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.

Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.

Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer, Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat, the National Association for Gifted Children, or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.

The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there if you need to contact me).

As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.

  1. Gotham Academy also got a deal to be distributed in trade by Scholastic as part of their YA graphic novel tour. So its sales in monthly issues are more or less academic.

  2. Marginal titles like SUPERWOMAN and CYBORG are going to crash through the floor when DC raises cover prices to 3.99 in a few weeks. DC’s editors almost assuredly are already prepping numerous replacement titles to mitigate the impending carnage. DC must be happy with sub-standard performance, however; why else would they greenlight obvious dreck like KAMANDI and MIDNIGHTER?

  3. Re: Midnighter, you said “obvious dreck” but I’m certain you meant “one of the best comics of the Big Two”. Easy mistake to make I guess.

As far as Superwoman goes, as I said in my review earlier this week, I think the fall-out on “Superman Reborn” gives them an easy out if they want to shuffle that title off the docket. The event that enacts its entire premise “didn’t occur”.

  4. Love most of What DC doing But
New Superman Come on just cancel it admit failure and move on nobody will notice same with Superwoman
The Young Animal line is another failure dropping to quickly will not be long until under 10.000 copies retailers still figuring out ordering
Blue Beetle Cyborg and host of other titles going up to $3.99 is going to be brutal with cancelations comparable to 70’s DC impolision

  5. If DC had even slightly marketed NEW SUPERMAN to the Chinese American audience, I thinik they could have had a hit.

When retailers were offered 100% co-op on Facebook ads, I asked DC for a Chinese language version of the copy, and I was scoffed that that could possibly be a thing. I’m positive I could have had 500% sell-through in San Francisco if they’d listened to me, though –ESPECIALLY with Gene Yang involved. It’s a little crazy-making

  6. Busiek shows the math of how it’s the 100th ish of Astro City in the back, and it’s pretty solid. Every issue minus reprints and short stories. Only oddity is including #1/2, but it’s only really called that because it was a Wizard thing.

Brian – No harm in marketing not thinking about going with a Mandarin ad, but to not do it and then shoot down the idea when it’s presented by the business that will be buying he books from them? Ridiculous.
Not sure how it works between DC and retailers but if you get the chance you should consider bringing that up with someone else, preferably senior, because Marketing just isn’t doing their job.

  7. Looks like business as usual. After 6-7 months hype period everything is settling back to where it was. Remember how when new52 started Aquaman was outselling everything that Marvel was publishing? Same thing really happening here too.

  8. JL of America #1 — 102,843 (+ 27.4%)
I think issue #2 will lost a amont of reader with Reiss already absent. Me I didn’t like issue #1.

    Super Sons #1 — 99,380
A good number, but I don’t know who the market will react to this story. I find issue 2 disappointing, even if for now I keep the title in my sollicitation.

    Detective Comics #950 — 62,628
    Detective Comics #951 — 59,630
Tynion IV make a great work with Cassandra even if this arc is a little too slow.

    Superman #16 — 56,105
    Superman #17 — 54,561
Superman is a great title for the Big Blue.

    The Wild Storm #1 — 54,442
Too complicated … I’m surprised too tell that, because for once we have a huge work.

    Action Comics #973 — 43,047
    Action Comics #974 — 41,712
I like Jurgens even if I find him less comfortable that on Superman Lois & Clark.. Saddely I’m not fond of the arc that will come for the summer & will not follow the title on June & Jully.

    Red Hood & Outlaws #7 — 28,753
Sad because I like what Lobdell propose. Maybe his arc are too long.

    He-Man/T’cats #5 of 6 — 18,278
Very Enjoyable. A nostalgic Taste & a good writing/art. Take the TPB guys.

    Mother Panic #3 — 16,261
What ? Me I enjoy this title. Well I prefere Tomy Lee Edwards’ art than Andy Parks, but I’m addict to it. I’m a huge fan of the Young animal’s Doom Patrol too.

    Odyssey Amazons #2 of 6 — 14,334
    A disappointement. Art & Story aren’t great.

I also take the Flash’s (Rebirth) TPB.
    Thanks for the work.
