Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.
It was something of a mixed bag for DC in February. The return of both Dark Knight III and Justice League helped the average sales for both the DC Universe titles and DC as a whole from last month’s lows, to 31,503 & 24,611 respectively. However, the media sales for the DCU titles fell even further to 23,687, the lowest it has been since I took over the DC M2M column in January 2014. Plus, the woes continue for the Vertigo line, with both the average media sales falling to all-time lows of 6,274 & 5,558 respectively.
The Neal Adams freely-orderable variant (f.o.v.) covers were more or less on par with last month’s Adult Coloring Book f.o.v.s; a few titles exhibited a rise, others a decline. March sees the return of the polybagged variants, and we’ll see if DC can repeat the gains from the last time they tried that little stunt.
As of this writing DC haven’t yet released their June solicitations; so while we know the titles that will be involved in June’s Rebirth not-a-relaunch, we don’t yet know anything else as regards to creative teams or story directions.
Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted earlier this month over at Comichron!
Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.
(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)
1 - DARK KNIGHT III: THE MASTER RACE ($5.99) 11/2015: Dark Knight III #1 of 8 -- 440,234 [449,099] 12/2015: Dark Knight III #2 of 8 -- 158,188 (- 64.8%) [163,238] 01/2016: -- 02/2016: Dark Knight III #3 of 8 -- 146,044 (- 10.5%)
It wouldn’t be a Dark Knight series without delays, now would it?
The third issue of the return to one of DC’s most famous comics of the 1980s helps DC grab the #1 spot on the chart for February.
First Watchmen, then Dark Knight Returns. Can Atari Force be far behind?

3 - BATMAN ($3.99) 02/2006: Batman #650 -- 66,447 [74,355] 02/2011: Batman #707 -- 58,803 02/2012: Batman #6 -- 128,459 [135,435] 02/2013: Batman #17 -- 150,684 02/2014: Batman #28 -- 114,089 (- 1.3%) [115,891] ---------------------------------- 02/2015: Batman #39 -- 118,106 (+ 6.8%) [128,627] 03/2015: -- 04/2015: Batman #40 -- 131,128 (+ 20.3%) [154,764] 05/2015: -- 06/2015: Batman #41 -- 142,155 (- 6.1%) [145,305] 07/2015: Batman #42 -- 117,441 (- 18.3%) [118,702] 08/2015: Batman #43 -- 124,697 (+ 7.8%) [127,996] 09/2015: Batman #44 -- 114,409 (- 9.9%) [115,351] 10/2015: Batman #45 -- 109,367 (- 4.6%) [110,031] 11/2015: Batman #46 -- 106,989 (- 2.1%) [107,758] 12/2015: Batman #47 -- 127,201 (+ 18.0%) 01/2016: Batman #48 -- 100,962 (- 20.6%) 02/2016: Batman #49 -- 102,689 (+ 1.7%) ----------------- 6 months: - 19.8% 1 year : - 20.2% 2 years : - 11.4% 5 years : + 74.6% 10 years: + 38.1%
One of the few titles that shows a move up from last month’s Adult Coloring Book freely-orderable variant (f.o.v.) to this month’s Neal Adams f.o.v. Maybe because Adams is an artist typically associated with Batman?

10 - JUSTICE LEAGUE ($3.99) 02/2012: Justice League #6 -- 140,819 02/2013: Justice League #17 -- 105,304 02/2014: Justice League #28 -- 80,901 [82,335] -------------------------------------- 02/2015: Justice League #39 -- 72,904 (+ 6.0%) [75,492] 03/2015: -- 04/2015: Justice League #40 -- 78,388 (+ 9.0%) [82,316] 05/2015: -- 06/2015: Justice League #41 -- 97,584 (+ 17.2%) [96,464] 07/2015: Justice League #42 -- 81,291 (- 12.7%) [84,202] 08/2015: Justice League #43 -- 82,304 (+ 1.1%) [85,119] 09/2015: Justice League #44 -- 76,752 (- 5.3%) [80,630] 10/2015: Justice League #45 -- 77,192 (- 2.7%) [78,416] 11/2015: -- 12/2015: Justice League #46 -- 75,660 (- 3.5%) 12/2015: Justice League #47 -- 84,970 (+ 21.2%) [91,688] 01/2016: -- 02/2016: Justice League #48 -- 72,704 (- 20.7%) ----------------- 6 months: - 14.6% 1 year : - 0.3% 2 years : - 11.7%
DC’s third and final book in the Top 10 this month (the other seven were all Marvel titles).
Slipped it’s date from last month, so this is Justice League’s Adult Coloring Book f.o.v., and it shows the same big drop that the other books had last month with theirs.

14 - BATMAN/TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ($3.99) 12/2015: Batman/TMNT #1 of 6 -- 134,526 [156,919] 01/2016: Batman/TMNT #2 of 6 -- 52,337 (- 64.4%) [60,310] 02/2016: Batman/TMNT #3 of 6 -- 64,444 (+ 6.9%)
Well hey, something interesting is going on here!
The first two issues both chart again with second printings, and yet still sales on issue #3 go up even if you include the sales from #2’s second print.
So yes, sales on #1 were greatly inflated due to incentive variants, but there does seem to be genuine interest in this book. It’ will be interesting to see what happens to sales in the back half of the series (and it’s been a while since we’ve been able to say that!)

21 - HARLEY QUINN ($3.99) 02/2014: Harley Quinn #3 -- 63,967 [81,514] ------------------------------------ 02/2015: -- 03/2015: Harley Quinn #15 -- 66,904 (+ 0.8%) [68,445] 04/2015: Harley Quinn #16 -- 72,055 (+ 8.1%) [73,976] 05/2015: -- 06/2015: Harley Quinn #17 -- 68,243 (- 6.2%) [69,406] 07/2015: Harley Quinn #18 -- 59,566 (- 13.1%) [60,292] 08/2015: Harley Quinn #19 -- 64,223 (+ 8.1%) [65,155] 09/2015: Harley Quinn #20 -- 56,836 (- 10.0%) [58,652] 10/2015: Harley Quinn #21 -- 55,272 (- 5.7%) [55,282] 11/2015: Harley Quinn #22 -- 58,344 (+ 6.2%) [58,734] 12/2015: Harley Quinn #23 -- 69,168 (+ 17.8%) 01/2016: Harley Quinn #24 -- 44,967 (- 35.0%) 02/2016: Harley Quinn #25 -- 51,495 (+ 14.5%) ----------------- 6 months: - 21.0% 1 year : n.a. 2 years : - 36.8%
You will recall that last month’s issue for some unknown reason did not have a f.o.v. This month the f.o.v. returns, giving us another glimpse into how many extra sales an f.o.v. can give a title.

28 - BATMAN: EUROPA ($4.99) 11/2015: Eurpoa #1 of 4 -- 80,721 [82,545] 12/2015: Eurpoa #2 of 4 -- 52,235 (- 36.7%) 12/2015: Eurpoa #3 of 4 -- 49,474 (- 5.3%) 01/2016: -- 02/2016: Eurpoa #4 of 4 -- 47,776 (- 3.4%)
In all, I think you’d have to call this mini-series a moderate success.

30 - DETECTIVE COMICS ($3.99) 02/2006: Detective Comics #816 -- 35,410 02/2011: Detective Comics #874 -- 39,106 02/2012: Detective Comics #6 -- 94,415 02/2013: Detective Comics #17 -- 85,824 02/2014: Detective Comics #28 -- 56,619 ---------------------------------------- 02/2015: Detective Comics #39 -- 54,698 (+ 8.1%) [55,457] 03/2015: Detective Comics #40 -- 56,126 (+ 2.3%) [56,742] 04/2015: -- 05/2015: -- 06/2015: Detective Comics #41 -- 57,648 (+ 2.9%) [58,361] 07/2015: Detective Comics #42 -- 50,743 (- 12.5%) [51,055] 08/2015: Detective Comics #43 -- 53,576 (+ 5.4%) [53,797] 09/2015: Detective Comics #44 -- 55,871 (+ 4.4%) [56,177] 10/2015: Detective Comics #45 -- 47,972 (- 14.2%) [48,220] 11/2015: Detective Comics #46 -- 47,256 (- 1.9%) [47,280] 12/2015: Detective Comics #47 -- 45,867 (- 3.0%) 01/2016: Detective Comics #48 -- 45,111 (- 1.6%) 02/2016: Detective Comics #49 -- 45,300 (+ 0.4%) ----------------- 6 months: - 15.8% 1 year : - 18.3% 2 years : - 20.0% 5 years : + 15.8% 10 years: + 27.9%
In a few months the big numbers will return, and it will be just like the renumbering never happened.

31 - HARLEY'S LITTLE BLACK BOOK ($4.99) 12/2015: Harley's LBB #1 -- 92,266 01/2016: -- 02/2016: Harley's LBB #2 -- 45,030 (-51.2%)
A fairly large drop-off from issue #1, though that issue in addition to being a first issue of a Harley Quinn series also had one of those polybagged variants, while this issue had only a 1:25 incentive variant.
Also, I wonder what HLBB’s fate will be after Rebirth? There will only be what, three issues published by then? Will it continue, or get one of those really quick Marvel-style renumberings? Surely they won’t just cancel it, right?
—
40 - SUPERMAN: THE COMING OF THE SUPERMEN ($3.99) 02/2016: Supermen #1 of 6 -- 37,033
The first issue of Neal Adams’ Superman mini-series debuts between (and in the same range as) the launches of American Alien and Lois & Clark.

If there’s any one thing that needs to be fixed at DC, it is the sales on Superman & Wonder Woman. They are two of DC’s flagship characters and heroes on the backs of which, along with Batman, they are trying to build their film franchise. Now, Superman and Wonder Woman series aren’t likely to achieve Batman-level sales anytime soon, but they should be selling in the 50K – 60K range.
This will be an especially tough ask for Wonder Woman, a title that in the past has seen bumps up to that range with relaunches and crossovers, but historically (well, over the last 15 years for which I have the numbers) always settles down into the mid-20K to mid-30K range. But I believe that that it can be done, that someone out there can find the key to unlock long-term sales success for one of the most venerable characters in comics!

The top non-DCU book of February. And proof that putting Harley Quinn in your comic is worth a certain amount of sales.

A fairly sizable jump here; it’s not likely just the f.o.v., based on the evidence of the other titles, so maybe it’s the crossover with the other Superman titles?

Falling a bit faster than one would like to see at this stage of the game. But it’s still running way ahead of other recent digital first titles like Adventures of Superman and Sensation Comics at a similar point, so there’s little need to worry. It’s even tracking a couple thousand ahead of Batman ’66, so if the pattern holds I’d look to see Bombshells run thirty to thirty-five print issues.

If you’re wondering why, at these sales levels, DC is bringing Gotham Academy back after Rebirth, go check out the sales of the first collection as measured by BookScan. Not that they’re super huge, but it’s selling trades equal to and in many cases better than those who have comics sales twice as high as it does. And that doesn’t even count most library sales or school book fair sales, both of which are natural constituencies for a Batman-related book set in a prep school.

Not the worst sales of the recent Vertigo debuts, but it’s down there with New Romancer & Last Gang in Town and not very likely to still be on the Top 300 when it ends its six-issue run.

When Preacher debuts on AMC in May, that will make three current television series based on Vertigo properties (it joins Lucifer & iZombie). So you can understand the impulse to throw a bunch of stuff against the wall and see what might get picked up for development (as Unfollow recently was).
When viewed as R&D for possible television deals, producing a bunch of comics is a rather inexpensive way of going about it. But viewed as comic sales from a major publisher, these numbers are simply bad. One might think that DC would shift Vertigo over to being mostly Digital First then direct to trade paperback, so as to hide the awful sales numbers and erase the associated stigma of such when pitching to Hollywood.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold either as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month or what the sales of the previous issue of the series were—whichever is lower—for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

I’m really surprised at the numbers for Unfollow. It’s a very well done book so far, with nice art. Sure, it’s “kinda” been done before, but I”m interested to see where things go! Hopefully the development news will somehow save the book before it’s simply too late?
Atari Force will be coming from Dynamite soon. Including trade paperbacks of the original DC series.
Lucifer is doing good, so far! The fact that Astro City is still selling quite well, years after it was put on hiatus, and so many years after its creation is the proof that this is a ttile of itw own kind, still done with the same passion and professionnalism from its creative team, even after, what, 25 years?
The fact that sales are worse than they were before the New52boot speaks volumes.
Wel, the market changed drastically also. what speaks volume is the fact that DC has been completly unable to keep all those very enthousiastic new readers who tried their titles with the New52 launches. If it w<as their first time reading a comics, I'm not sure they will ever coming back. Talk about a completly wasted opportunity!
If you think these are bad numbers, it’s going to scrape the bottom before the relaunch as retailers cut to eliminate any potential unsold books. Also, the news is that DC isn’t in June Previews, but will put out their own catalog, TWO weeks later!
Not sure how that helps sales numbers. Hopefully they can get it out faster for the benefit of the curious.
Were there ever actually any new readers? Or was it just comic stores over-ordering on first issues, as they almost always do?
Total sales for 2015 were higher than 2010’s, so if you think sales are worse than before the new52, you’re wrong.
And even if they are/were, that doesn’t mean new52 wasn’t a success, it’s just been long enough now that it’s time for the next thing. And frankly, it sounds like Rebirth is going to be a big enough deal that you wouldn’t be able to compare 2016 to 2010 and say it really had much to do with new52 – there’s too many other factors by now.
In other news, shouldn’t Green Lantern: Lost Army be included in the counts for Green Lantern Corps/Green Lantern: Edge of Oblivion?
4 years 1/2 is enought to justify a complete relaunch of all your titles now?
And yes, the er were new readers for the new52, A lot of people came back to comics shops. And in France, it was a real opportunity for DC to make the comics adventures of their characters better known.
It’s been awhile since I bought a DC book. I flip through a few here and there, and walk away. DC? Help me buy your books. Work with me here. And yes, these sales figures show that something is wrong.
“Total sales for 2015 were higher than 2010’s”
Total sales of what? Floppies? Trades? The entire industry? Thanks for the helpful statistic, hoss.
Why are the bracketed sales figures lower than the original ones in some cases? E.g.:
06/2015: Doctor Fate #1 — 39,558 [34,514]
06/2015: Midnighter #1 — 35,420 (+221.8%) [31,915]
@Glen I counted Green Lantern: Lost Army as a separate series. There was a note to this effect in last month’s column
@ComicCruncher Returns. See last month’s column for the details.
Can someone explain the theory behind freely orderable variants from both DC and the retailer’s perspective? At my local shop, the Neal Adams cover issues were being sold for $7.99 on the day of release. This seems absurd to me. Couldn’t retailers order as many as they wanted? If they are in such high demand (I don’t think they are), why didn’t DC mark them up? I liked some of the Adams covers, but I’m not going to pay over cover price for them. I’m pretty sure that in a year from now they will be in the discount boxes.
The f.o.v.s are indeed freely-orderable, and cost the same as the regular covers. If you local shop is marking them up on release day, hopefully there is another store nearby that you can frequent instead.
wow, those vertigo numbers are beyond depressing.
