Greetings, sales charts fans! It’s time once again to look at DC’s sales figures.
I know things look kind of bad, especially the one year comparisons to August 2016. But recall that that month had DC’s best first-month sales of the modern Diamond era (the data I have goes back to March 2003). August 2017 was really just back to typical overall sales figures for DC.
This month saw DC kick off their big crossover, Dark Nights: Metal, with first month sales topping those of the DC Rebirth one-shot (though under both Harley Quinn #1 and All Star Batman #1 from August 2016 and Batman #1 from June 2016). Those 262K in sales for DN:M cover up some of the sins later in the chart, but there’s still trouble in the nether regions: Slumping sales on several Rebirth books, only one Vertigo book making the top 300 (out of four total), disappointing sales not the Kirby one-shots, and the huge gap between Batman at 100K and the next best-selling book at just 57K.
A reminder that I also do sales charts over on my personal blog, including a monthly cumulative tally of the DC Rebirth trade collections and a weekly snapshot of the Amazon Top 50 comics.
Warning: The commentary below may contain reasoned analysis, speculation (unfounded and otherwise), opinion, and/or snark. Those looking for a more straightforward analysis are directed to John Jackson Miller’s excellent Comichron analysis, posted in September over at Comichron!
Please consider the fine print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.
(Note that the percentage comparisons are done with total orders including reorder activity, as opposed to initial orders as was the practice of this column under the previous administration.)

1 - DARK NIGHTS: METAL ($4.99) 06/2017: The Forge #1 -- 130,651 [139,088] 07/2017: The Casting #1 -- 128,261 (- 7.8%) 08/2017: Metal #1 -- 261,997 (+104.3%)
DC’s big event series debuts (after a couple of prologues) selling really well (at least to comic stores…) There were a ton of variants, and shiny metal covers, so it’s anyone’s guess as to where actual readership lies. But yeah, a Batman-centric event by two of DC’s biggest creators of the past five years? A good call.

Batman stays above the 100K again this month, coming in the #2 & #3 spots on the Diamond chart. 100K seems to be the natural state for the Rebirth Batman, which is really good for a twice-monthly comic. There are things for DC to be concerned about, but Batman certainly is not one of them.

15 - ALL STAR BATMAN ($4.99) 08/2007: -- ------------------------------------------ 08/2016: All Star Batman #1 -- 318,283 (+238.5%) 09/2016: All Star Batman #2 -- 151,523 (- 52.4%) 10/2016: All Star Batman #3 -- 117,596 (- 22.4%) 11/2016: All Star Batman #4 -- 99,064 (- 15.8%) 12/2016: All Star Batman #5 -- 87,422 (- 11.8%) 01/2017: All Star Batman #6 -- 84,296 (- 3.8%) 02/2017: All Star Batman #7 -- 77,096 (- 8.5%) 03/2017: All Star Batman #8 -- 71,809 (- 6.9%) 04/2017: All Star Batman #9 -- 67,632 (- 5.8%) 05/2017: All Star Batman #10 -- 66,018 (- 2.4%) 06/2017: All Star Batman #11 -- 62,689 (- 5.0%) 07/2017: All Star Batman #12 -- 60,569 (- 3.4%) 08/2017: All Star Batman #13 -- 56,990 (- 2.9%) ----------------- 6 months: - 26.1% 1 year : - 82.1% 10 years: n.a.
The first thing for DC to be worried about: The over 40K gap between Batman and their next-best selling comic, which is ending soon and will only make the gap even wider.

The see-saw nature of the sales patterns on books like Detective (i.e. the first book of the month shows a smallish drop, while the second book of the month shows a slightly larger drop) may have something to do with reorders making their way into the counts for the earlier issue (as reorders for the later issue wouldn’t be included until the net month, and would fall below the Top 300 cut-off).

It’s kinda odd that Flash outsells Superman and Wonder Woman; he does have his own TV show, but then so do Green Arrow and Supergirl and that’s not helping their comics any.

60 - MISTER MIRACLE ($3.99) 08/2017: Mr. Miracle #1 of 12 -- 33,493
These are fairly soft numbers for the debut issue of a comic by the writer of Batman. And a bit risky in this day and age to start up a twelve-issue limited series starring a C-list character. But the comic got really good reviews, with a second printing in September and a third printing on the way in October. So we’ll see how things go.

Apparently the sizable jump in sales for Supergirl is mostly (if not solely) due to new variant cover artist Stanley “Artgerm” Lau. Which is kind of amazing, in that so far in the Rebirth era there has been very little is any fluctuation due to who the variant cover artist is. But I guess that Mr. Germ has a following?

Also, this is as good of a place as any to mention that a second printing of the Batman/Elmer Fudd Special came in at #212 on the chart with 9,678 copies.

Nearly a whopping 10K below the sales of the mother title, which considering that the annual is part two of a story that started in issue #12 and continues in issue #13 means there are going to be a lot of readers missing the middle of the story (well, except for those who only bought Supergirl for the variant cover…)

Yeah, I checked and double checked and triple checked; the second issue of the limited series isn’t on the Diamond Top 300 chart. Not only is that some kind of record for a Vertigo comic, but it also means that the second issue dropped off more than 50% from the first issue.
DC must have had a reason for commissioning a new American Way series, and I’m sure that floppy sales weren’t one of them—I’m guessing maybe long-tail sales of the collected edition of the original series were good?—but surely they would not have thought that sales would drop this far this fast!

Total sales were up about 250K in August, though August was a five week month, and DC had nine more comic titles than in July (most of those being the low-selling Kirby Specials).
And yes, that one year decline looks awful, but remember that August 2016 was the best month ever for DC in the modern Diamond era.

The Fine Print (Disclaimers, et cetera)
The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.
ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.
Bear in mind that the figures measure sales of physical comics to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month; or they show up in the year-end Top 1000. Keep in mind that sales for some titles may include incentives to acquire variants and not every unit sold is necessarily even intended to be sold to a customer.
If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in brackets behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]”). Likewise, any lower numbers due to returns or other factors returns will also be reflected in the brackets. Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.
Titles which are returnable have their numbers artificially adjusted down by Diamond. To make up for that this column increases the reported numbers for those titles by 10%. Which is likely also wrong, but it’s a different and likely less wrong kind of wrong, and experience has shown that this leads to sales figures which are more consistent.
Titles released under the All-Ages line and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. Likewise, Digital First comics are published online before print, and may do a significant amount of their sales in that arena. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well.
Please keep in mind that raw sales numbers do not tell us about how profitable a book is for a publisher or for the creators.
Above all, do not allow sales numbers to dictate your purchasing and enjoyment of a particular comic. If you enjoy reading a comic series then go right on buying and reading that comic, no matter what the sales figures say.
** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.
Opinions expressed in this column are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer; Heidi MacDonald or anyone at The Comics Beat; The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers; or my former neighbor’s dog Miles.
The author of this column does weekly snapshots of Amazon comic sales charts at http://yetanothercomicsblog.blogspot.com/ and tweets about comics and related subjects on Twitter at @davereadscomics (PM me there is you need to contact me).
As always, we welcome your comments and corrections below. Please try to keep things civilized.
Between these sales and Marvel’s lately I sure as heck wouldnt want to be a comics retailer. Sadly, I am. Job openings, anyone?
Aquaman’s sales are probably on the rise because the new artist is knocking it out of the park! I think he came from Top Cow and I’m not even going to pretend to be able to pronounce his name but his art is amazing
you should take a long look in the mirror and wonder why you would attack anybody who’s only giving praise and positivity towards others. you know what kind of person does that? an asshole
DC distributed free sample copies of AMERICAN WAY number 1.
LL
Why is it automatically white privilege when there are probably plenty of people from other nationalities who would have trouble pronouncing Stjepan Sejic’s name properly?
Why is anyone trying to pronounce Stjepan Sejic’s name on a message board? Just cut and paste it….
The funny thing is that with a name like his, he’s probably from Croatia or Slovenia. So he’s probably white himself.
Yeah, I can’t pronounce it either, but type it…Stjepan Sejic…that was pretty easy. People are digging it. I used to be able to go in Wednesday afternoons at my lcs and just grab it, now I need to have it pulled otherwise that spot is empty by the time I get there.
I think the “hiatus” for the Young Animal books came at a good time. I was all-in for Cave Carson and Shade, but I was not feeling I was going to keep going after 12.
Doom Patrol is still pretty good, though.
I’m undecided if I will stick with Blue Beetle after Giffen’s last issue.
These numbers do not suck nearly as much as Marvel’s though!
I’m sad about Cave Carson going on hiatus, but it’s better than cancelled, right? I’ll read one Blue Beetle without Giffen and judge from there.
Gerard Way and DC have been pretty clear that Shade and Cave Carson are coming back after the Young Animal/Justice League crossover. And both CCHAEE 12 and Shade 12 had “next issue” boxes, so I think it’s okay to take the scare quotes off of the word hiatus. Neither book has been late like Doom Patrol, nor had rotating artists each arc like Mother Panic, so this probably just an opportunity for the creative teams to get caught up.

Daaaaaamn those sales are low, and with a few exceptions, across my reading list it’s the lower they are that the more I enjoy them!
For me, Deathstroke and Green Arrow are the two best DC books. Priest is just knocking it out of the park on Deathstroke, and whilst the story is good in Green Arrow the alternating art by Otto Schmidt and Juan Ferreyra is the best going in superhero comics right now.
New Superman was up there, but has dropped a bit in my ratings due to shifting the artist Viktor Bogdanovic over to Action Comics. Phillip Tan and his clones just don’t do it for me. Deathstroke and New Superman are two I broke my “No $3.99 books from Big Two” rule for, though when GA goes monthly I’ll probably switch to trade or digital.
Also shocked to see Suicide Squad and JLA so low as both are buck wild fun to read.
(I’m not sure how to pronounce or spell half those last names and don’t care who tries to troll me about privelge over it!)
Also, doubt Superman is going to stabilize as after the drop dead boring Tomasi scripted “US troops are just the greatest even Superman thinks so” two parter (which I skipped the second part of) it’s been a series of fill in teams. Hasn’t been bad, but feels likes the sort of thing that puts sales in freefall.
I didn’t want Nightwing New Order, but it wasn’t bad. I’ll wait for trade over buying more singles though. I thought it meant Nightwing was doing well, as the book has been consistently enjoyable, but that sales chart sure says otherwise.
Dan Abnett’s Aquaman has been top drawer since its relaunch, but now Stephen Sejic’s art is icing on the cake.
I actually kinda liked the first half of Tomasi’s “US military hagiography” two-parter, but the conclusion read like it was copy-and-pasted from a dull Wiki article.
Ben, Shame you skip the second part (Of superman), because I believe it was better than the first.
Except detective comics, the other DC title I follow take some blow.
Mother Panic will have a hiatus after issue 12 too. But I’m not sure I will be there.
The last I read is more & more bowering sadly.
Trevonte Jones – you think insulting someone you don’t know is progressive??? Its what ALL trolls do on the internet. Welcome to being the exact opposite of what you claim to be. .
Its so weird that apart from Batman all titles are pretty much 50k or less. Is there 50k people only buying 1 title a month?
It will be curious to see how Mr Miracle goes over the next few months with all the sell out news. 10k each for the next 2 prints? So maybe another 50k book or higher?
Also, its a shame Detective is the 2nd highest monthly (or 3rd really). I think Flash, Superman, Action, Titans and Supersons are all better quality.
Also, I think Flash is doing so well because of its ties to the Rebirth mystery. Batman, Superman, Barry and Wally seem to be the 4 it revolves around.
“Its so weird that apart from Batman all titles are pretty much 50k or less. Is there 50k people only buying 1 title a month?”
More like Batman is the one title that a lot of people buy. So for example, one person buys Batman & Detective & Nightwing; another person buys Batman & Flash & Superman; etc.
Sorry Le Chanu Joel, just couldn’t do it. Like Solmaker I didn’t actually mind the first part, and I thought it was going to be a storyline about the Kent family roadtrip, but I almost fell asleep just flipping through part two in the shop. Maybe if I was American a story about American soldiers of the past would be interesting enough, but I’m not and I read Superman for Superman stories not history lessons.
From the artists’s tumblr: “I am Stjepan Sejic, a comic book artist and writer and this is my tumblrumblr You may know me as Nebezial, Shiniez, or that guy whose name i can’t pronounce …”
He’s Croatian. Not being able to pronounce his name is not “white privilege.” That’s not being “progressive,” it’s being a pearl-clutching snarkmonkey.
