You’ll notice that DC is pushing Young Animal hard, placing the titles at the front of the catalog.

There’s also Rebirth stuff, plus lots of reprints from the 1980s, including Wasteland, a horror anthology from the mid-1980s.

Of course, there’s a lot of stuff tied into DC Entertainment’s multimedia, like Lucifer, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Suicide Squad.

Also coloring books, including one for kids! Coloring books, they aren’t just for adults anymore! [Awaiting diversity rant from fanboys in 3…2…]

I’ve added covers to the titles I find intriguing. If your mileage may vary, let me know in the comments!

Summary: Cave Carson has a cybernetic eye. But you knew that already.
The question is, why was this spelunking adventurer fitted with a bionic implant and what do the visions it’s giving him mean?
Before his cybernetic eye started showing Cave Carson a world outside his own, he had retired from his life of exploring the center of the Earth with his wife, Eileen, and they had settled into a comfortable, if not mundane, existence above the surface. That is, until Eileen got sick. Now, newly widowed, a knock on the door of Cave’s underground lab has brought him back into the world he thought he left behind, beneath the surface of the Earth.
Co-written by Gerard Way (DOOM PATROL) and Jon Rivera (HEARTBREAK), with stunning art by Michael Avon Oeming (POWERS), this absurdist take on one of DC’s more obscure spelunkers explores love and loss, and the line between reality and perception. Collects issues #1-6.

Born in 1914 in Cleveland, OH, Jerome Siegel was, as a teenager, a fan of the emerging literary genre that came to be known as science fiction. Together with schoolmate Joe Shuster, Siegel published several science fiction fan magazines, and in 1933 they came up with their own science fiction hero—Superman. Siegel scripted and Shuster drew several weeks’ worth of newspaper strips featuring their new creation, but garnered no interest from publishers or newspaper syndicates. It wasn’t until the two established themselves as reliable adventure-strip creators at DC Comics that the editors at DC offered to take a chance on the Superman material—provided it was re-pasted into comic book format for DC’s new magazine, ACTION COMICS. Siegel wrote the adventures of Superman (as well as other DC heroes, most notably the Spectre, his co-creation with Bernard Baily) through 1948 and then again from 1959-1966, in the interim scripting several newspaper strips including Funnyman and Ken Winston. Jerry Siegel died in January 1996.
Author Hometown: Cleveland, OH,
Joseph Shuster was born in 1914 in Toronto, Canada. When he was nine, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where Shuster met Jerry Siegel. The two became fast friends and collaborators; together, they published the earliest science fiction fan magazines, where Shuster honed his fledgling art skills. In 1936, he and Siegel began providing DC Comics with such new features as Dr. Occult, Slam Bradley and Radio Squad before selling Superman to DC in 1938. Joe Shuster drew Superman through 1947, after which he left comic books to create the comic strip Funnyman, again with Siegel. Failing eyesight cut short his career, but not before his place in the history of American culture was assured. Shuster died of heart failure on July 30, 1992.Summary: When the last son of Krypton was sent to Earth, one of the greatest legends of all time was born. This edition collects some of the earliest tales of Superman as they were first published. Written and drawn by his creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, these tales find Superman helping everyday people against crooked politicians, taking on mad scientists and running afoul of influential socialites.

Born in 1911 in Brooklyn, New York, Gardner Fox was probably the single most imaginative and productive writer in the Golden Age of comics. In the 1940s, he created or co-created dozens of long-running features for DC Comics, including THE FLASH, HAWKMAN, THE SANDMAN and DOCTOR FATE, as well as penning most of the adventures of comics’ first super-team, the JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA. He was also the second person to script BATMAN, beginning somewhere around the Dark Knight Detective’s third story. For other companies over the years Fox also wrote Skyman, the Face, Jet Powers, Dr. Strange, Doc Savage and many others—including Crom the Barbarian, the first sword-and-sorcery series in comics. Following the revival in the late 1950s of the super-hero genre, Fox assembled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes once more and scripted an unbroken 65-issue run of JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. Though he produced thousands of other scripts and wrote over 100 books, it is perhaps this body of work for which he is best known. Fox passed away in 1986.

Jack “King” Kirby’s comics career began in 1937 and continued for nearly six decades. With partner Joe Simon, Kirby first made his mark in comics in the 1940s by drawing and/or creating numerous features for DC Comics including Sandman, the Newsboy Legion and Manhunter and Marvel including Captain America, the Young Allies, and the Kid Commandos. As the most valued team in comics, Simon and Kirby went on to create titles and concepts including Fighting American, Boys’ Ranch and the creation of the romance comics genre. In 1961, the first issue of Marvel’s Fantastic Four cemented Kirby’s reputation as comics’ preeminent creator, and a slew of famous titles followed that elevated him to legendary status, including Incredible Hulk, Avengers and X-Men. Kirby returned to DC in 1971 with his classic FOURTH WORLD TRILOGY, which was followed by THE DEOMON and KAMANDI. Kirby continued working and innovating in comics until his death in 1994.
Summary: At last, DC presents the adventures of Kamandi, the last boy on Earth, in the popular Jack Kirby Omnibus format!
Kamandi-one of the few survivors of a Great Disaster that has destroyed civilization—must search for a safe haven in a world populated by bizarre mutated animals and other strange wonders! Considered one of Jack Kirby’s most creative works, KAMANDI features a band of anthropomorphic supporting characters who accompany Kamandi as he searches for answers and adventure across the wastelands of Earth.
From one of comics’ legendary creators, Jack Kirby’s Kamandi faces danger from a giant, monstrous crab creature and an intelligent killer whale, and is hunted by the Sacker Company as a valuable intelligent human. In what is considered the series’ greatest tale, Kamandi is forced to compete with the leader of a gorilla clan for the ultimate prize: Superman’s costume!
This hardcover omnibus collects Jack Kirby’s run on KAMANDI, THE LAST BOY ON EARTH #1-40.

William Finger was born on February 8, 1914. He met cartoonist Bob Kane at a party in 1938, and soon after they were collaborating on several adventure strips. Within a year, Batman appeared. Finger’s fondness for pulp fiction and movies influenced his plots and writing style for comic books. He worked on many other DC characters and titles, scripted some of the 1940s daily and Sunday Batman and Robin newspaper strip continuities, and wrote for Quality, Fawcett and Timely. Finger’s television credits include 77 Sunset Strip, The Roaring Twenties and Hawaiian Eye during the late 1950s and early 1960s. His efforts in the superhero genre also appeared on TV in the 1960s, including material for the animated NewAdventures of Superman plus a two-part Clock King episode of the 1966 Batman series. Finger died in New York City on January 24, 1974. He was posthumously inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame in 1999.

Robert Kahn was born on October 24, 1916, in the Bronx and at age 18 legally changed his name to Kane. In 1936, this self-proclaimed “compulsive doodleholic” pencilled and inked his first comic book work, Hiram Hick. By 1938 he was selling humorous filler stories to DC Comics, including Professor Doolittle and Ginger Snap. Kane met writer Bill Finger at a party in 1938, and they soon were collaborating on comic book submissions. Their most famous effort, Batman, first appeared in DETECTIVE COMICS #27 (May 1939). As Batman’s popularity demanded additional output, Kane kept up the pace by adding assistants and dropping non-Batman assignments. He discontinued his comic book efforts in mid-1943 to pencil the daily Batman and Robin newspaper strip. After the strip’s 1946 demise, Kane returned to illustrating Batman’s comic book adventures and, with the help of several guests, remained involved with comics until his retirement in 1968. The success of the Batman television series brought Kane and his art back into the public eye in 1966. He was subsequently featured in various one-man art shows at galleries and museums nationwide and released a number of limited-edition lithographs. He served as a consultant on the 1989 Batman feature film and its sequels. His autobiography, Batman and Me, was published in 1989, and in 1996 he was inducted into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. Kane died on November 3, 1998.Summary: The 1940s tales that cemented Batman’s reputation as the world’s greatest crime-fighter are collected in this new paperback. Summary: IT’S DARKEST AT THE DAWN!
Vandal Savage can afford to be patient—he’s immortal, thanks to fragments from a comet he came into contact with more than 40,000 years ago…a comet that he has since spent aeons and spilled blood trying to bring back to Earth. A comet that, should he reclaim it, will grant him untold might.
Savage’s patience is about to pay off. Through his operatives, he’s taken Superman’s powers—and, indirectly, his secret identity—to siphon the collective strength of the Justice League and generate the ultimate tractor beam. As the beam draws Savage’s long-lost comet all the way back to Earth, unsuspecting souls bearing the immortal’s genetic signature are suddenly infused with maddening might, while their “father’s” already-incredible power exponentially increases.
Only a handful of heroes, led by Wonder Woman and a depowered Superman, stand between Savage and his comet, and soon even they won’t be enough—that is, unless Superman taps into a deadly element from his past to deny his immortal adversary a future of eternal power.

Summary: The #1 New York Times bestseller!
This is a Batman story like no other—the harrowing and eloquent autobiographical tale of writer Paul Dini’s courageous struggle to overcome a desperate situation.
The Caped Crusader has been the all-abiding icon of justice and authority for generations. But in this surprising original graphic novel, we see Batman in a new light—as the savior who helps a discouraged man recover from a brutal attack that left him unable to face the world.
In the 1990s, legendary writer Paul Dini had a flourishing career writing the hugely popular Batman: The Animated Series and Tiny Toon Adventures. Walking home one evening, he was jumped and viciously beaten within an inch of his life. His recovery process was arduous, hampered by the imagined antics of the villains he was writing for television, including the Joker, Harley Quinn and the Penguin. But despite how bleak his circumstances were, or perhaps because of it, Dini also always imagined the Batman at his side, chivvying him along during his darkest moments.
A gripping graphic memoir of one writer’s traumatic experience and his deep connection with his creative material, DARK NIGHT: A TRUE BATMAN STORY is an original graphic novel that will resonate profoundly with fans. Art by the incredible and talented Eduardo Risso (100 BULLETS, TRANSMETROPOLITAN).

Born in 1911, Otto Oscar Binder was one of the most prolific writers of comics’ Golden Age. He began his professional career in the world of science fiction pulp magazines, where he collaborated on scores of pieces with his brother Earl under the pen name Eando Binder. After breaking into comics in 1939, Otto began working at his brother Jack’s studio in 1941, and he was soon contributing scripts to Fawcett Publications.
Binder became a mainstay on CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES, eventually writing more than two-thirds of the title’s stories over the course of its 150-issue run. During his time at Fawcett he helped to create many of the feature’s most beloved supporting players, including Mary Marvel, Tawky Tawny, the Sivana family and, of course, Mr. Mind.
In 1953, he began long runs on such DC titles as MYSTERY IN SPACE, STRANGE ADVENTURES, SUPERBOY, SUPERMAN and SUPERMAN’S PAL, JIMMY OLSEN. He also contributed to E.C.’s classic line of science fiction and horror titles. Binder continued writing comics through the 1960s, providing scripts for DC, Harvey, Warren and Western Publishing while simultaneously producing dozens of science fiction novels and short stories. He finally retired from writing full-time in 1969, and passed away on October 13, 1974.

Born in 1926, Robert G. Haney entered the comics field in 1948, writing war, crime and western stories for a wide variety of publishers, including Fawcett, Quality, Fox, Harvey, Toby, Hillman and St. John. By 1956, however, he was working almost exclusively for DC, where he would remain until the early 1980s. In the course of his long career, Haney worked on a vast number of DC titles, but he is perhaps best known for his pivotal role in the creation of Metamorpho, Eclipso and the original Teen Titans, his long runs on BATMAN AND ROBIN, SUICIDE SQUAD, TOMAHAWK and MYSTERY IN SPACE, and his prodigious contributions to editor Robert Kanigher’s line of war comics.
Author Hometown: Deceased
Born in 1932, Jim Aparo was a self-taught artist who first attempted to break into the industry in the early 1950s with the legendary EC Comics group. When his work was rejected, Aparo turned to advertising art in his native Connecticut, specializing in fashion illustrations for newspaper advertisements while he continued trying to break into comics. His dream was finally realized in 1966 when editor Dick Giordano at Charlton Comics hired him as a comic book artist; his first assignment was a humorous character called Miss Bikini Luv in Go-Go Comics. Sharpening his skills on such strips as the Phantom, Nightshade, Wander and Thane of Bagarth, Aparo followed editor Giordano to DC Comics in 1968. Jim Aparo quickly gained notice for his smooth, realistic style on such books as AQUAMAN, THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD, THE PHANTOM, THE SPECTRE, BATMAN (including the seminal “A Death in the Family” storyline, depicting the death of Jason (Robin) Todd), DETECTIVE COMICS, BATMAN AND THE OUTSIDERS as well as countless stories for HOUSE OF MYSTERY and HOUSE OF SECRETS. An artist whose work is still considered a high-water mark for the industry, Jim Aparo died on July 19, 2005.
Illustrator Residence: Deceased
Illustrator Hometown: DeceasedSummary: Jim Aparo was one of the premier Batman artists of the 1970s, working primarily on the Batman team-up title THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD. Now, DC collects Aparo’s run on the series in hardcover for the first time from the beginning. Aparo portrayed Batman as a detective who operated in shadow, yet captured the action and thrills of the Caped Crusader.
In these stories, the Caped Crusader crosses paths with The Flash, Metamorpho, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Green Arrow, Swamp Thing, the Joker and many more.

A true giant in the world of comics, Jack “The King” Kirby began his comics career in 1937 at the age of 20. During comics’ Golden Age, Kirby (along with his partner Joe Simon) drew and/or created innumerable features, including Captain America, the Young Allies, the Sandman, the Newsboy Legion and Manhunter. During the 1950s, Kirby and Simon continued to pour out stories and concepts, including The Fighting American for Crestwood and Boys’ Ranch for Harvey, as well as creating the romance comics genre with their groundbreaking title Young Romance for Prize Comics. In 1961, the first issue of Marvel Comics’ The Fantastic Four—a collaboration between Kirby and Marvel editor-in-chief Stan Lee—cemented Kirby’s reputation as comics’ preeminent creator. Throughout the 1960s, Kirby and Lee laid the groundwork for the Marvel Universe that flourishes to this day. Kirby returned to DC in 1971 with his classic “Fourth World Trilogy”—THE NEW GODS, MISTER MIRACLE and THE FOREVER PEOPLE—which was followed by THE DEMON, OMAC and KAMANDI. After a brief return to Marvel in the mid-1970s (during which time he created the Eternals), Kirby shifted his attention to the animation industry, where he worked until his retirement in 1987. That same year he joined Will Eisner and Carl Barks as the first inductees into the Eisner Awards Hall of Fame. Jack Kirby passed away in 1994.
Summary: In 1984, legendary writer/artist Jack Kirby co-wrote and illustrated tales of the Justice League of America in the miniseries SUPER POWERS. Now, for the first time, DC collects all three SUPER POWERS miniseries in a single hardcover, with stories co-written by Kirby cover art by Kirby, and six stories featuring the powerful art of the King of Comics. These tales pit the JLA—including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Hawkman, and more against the forces of Darkseid, lord of Apokolips. These stories are the only time in his long career that Kirby would draw the Justice League, elevating these stories to legendary status.
Collects SUPER POWERS Vol. 1 #1-5, SUPER POWERS Vol. 2 #1-6 and SUPER POWERS Vol. 3 #1-4, originally published from 1984-1986.

  1. Legion of Super-Heroes Silver Age Omnibus and Doom Patrol Silver Age Omnibus – count me in! Hope that DC continues with Flash and Green Lantern omnibus editions as well – looking for Vol 3 for each of them. Also, wished DC would release an Alan Moore Swamp Thing omnibus as well.

  2. I would have complained that the Contributor Bios only included the writers, until I got to the Batman: The Golden Age entry that included a full bio of Bill Finger with nary a mention of glory hog Bob Kane. It won’t undue 75 years of ignorance on behalf of DC, but something.

  3. Pretty excited about the Kirby reprints(Super Power and Kamandi) but that Kamandi volume is 800 pages!! That one needs reinforced biceps to lift it. Why not release it as two 400 pagers.

Would like to see a reprinting of ALL of Kirby’s Fourth World Omnibus volumes for his birth anniversary, 2017! (They are out of print and selling for high resale prices)

  4. Al@

They already released Kirby’s KAMANDI in two volumes just a few years ago.

They also released his SUPER POWERS (v1 and v2) as part of a KIRBY OMNIBUS a few years ago (with a lot of other Kirby stuff), and that one is still in print. Not sure why DC thinks anyone is clamouring to get the third non-Kirby series (a bargain bin staple) added to the package. Especially when, as you note, the entire original Fourth World series is out of print. Let’s get our priorities in order, DC.

  5. Flash and Green Lantern complete their Silver Age runs in their Volume 2s. Up next would be Bronze Age volume 1.

  6. Only thing on that whole list I’m dissaointed with is that Vol 2 of Daring Adventures of Supergirl does not include the Lois Lane backup stories. I hope DC will do a collection of those. I’d really like to read them.
