As convention season goes from zero to 60 in a few weekends, publishers are announcing new titles, some shipping in a few months, some shipping next Fall.
Marvel has announced their latest graphic novel collections, for September-December 2016, and we bring you their latest and greatest, just so you can start being good for Santa (or, in my case, buy some presents for yourself)!
So, what’s up? Star Wars from Greg Rucka! Omnibuses! (both hard and soft!) Hip-Hop! James Patterson! George Romero! Fred Hembeck! Skottie Young! Doctor Strange! Leia, Lando, and Chewie! Civil War II!
I don’t know how well those 500+ page paperback “Epic Collection” volumes will hold up to reading… that’s a lot of weight for a glued binding. But for $40 (less if discounted online), they should sell nicely, just like those Walking Dead tomes.
I’m glad that the “Marvel Universe” imprint is being used for media tie-ins aimed at younger readers! $9.99!!!
I’m also happy that Marvel is exploring their less serious side with Squirrel Girl, Gwen Pool, and the Worst X-Man Ever. (Can we get a Gus Beezer collection?) I was a MAD fan before I became a comicbook collector, and I’ve always enjoyed the more … absurd corners of the Marvel Universe.
My faves? Look for covers below. There seems to be a good balance between archival titles and new stuff, and titles for just about everyone on your shopping list!
[Comicsologists, take note… some of the titles listed below show the “announced first printing”. That’s how many copies Marvel plans to print, and generally, given Marvel’s very conservative business practices, expects to sell. Compare this number to what ICV2 estimates in their Top 300 lists. Some are very low…. less than 10,000 copies. (Marvel Masterworks are the rarities…. only 1,800 copies published!) Some, like that Star Wars coloring book are in the six digits, suggesting that Marvel will be partnering with many non-comics retailers this Fall. (Compare and contrast with the Doctor Strange and A-Force coloring books.)]

Brian Michael Bendis is an American comic book writer and former artist. He has won critical acclaim, including five Eisner Awards for both his creator-owned work and his work on various Marvel Comics books.
Starting out with crime and noir comics, Bendis eventually moved to mainstream superhero work.
