Comics might just be the perfect medium for non-fiction. Words and pictures can combine with a narrative to allow for better communication. Graphs, photos, maps, schematics… all can be used to great effect. Couple this with the reader’s ability to set the pace of reading and comprehension, and the option of referring to previous pages and it makes for a near-perfect instructional medium.

Oh, and it’s comics! It’s so easy to get kids to read a comic book!

Recently and in upcoming months, there will be a wide variety of non-fiction graphic novels hitting shelves!

Lots of biographies! Some very famous, some not so, but all intriguing! And Memoirs!

History! Like how the CIA F’d up big time in Iran (the first time). Or the mystery behind a famous photograph!

Media studies! Movies! Music! “Narrative Journalism”! “Based On A True Story”!

Most by talented cartoonists! We’ve come a long way from this!

The most intriguing aspect of all this? Not that mainstream and small press publishers are publishing graphic novels far outside the normal fantastic and literary tropes. What’s interesting is that the major publishers, the “Big Five”, have a variety of GNs coming from a variety of imprints. Sure, First Second at Macmillan has a stellar list of titles, many destined for future accolades. It’s the other Macmillan imprints which are selling titles… Thomas Dunne (? had to look them up…part of St. Martins), Metropolitan (part of Henry Holt), St. Martins, Hill & Wang! Random House has been doing this for a few years, as their literary imprints, which run independent of each other, have been promoting the occasional graphic novel. (Pantheon, featured below, launched a graphic novel imprint over a decade ago, godfathered by Chip Kidd.)

Summary: ‘Come to bed with me?’
‘Huh? No, I’d rather read this book about cancer…’

As soon as Bob was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer, he and his wife Elizabeth started making cancer jokes to take the edge off of an otherwise awful situation. A lot of those jokes were about sex. Paul Buhle: Paul Buhle, author of over 35 books, is one of the best-known radical historians in the United States.

Summary:

“I would say he was the best courtroom lawyer I’ve known in my lifetime, and I’ve known a lot of them.”—Tom Hayden

“He wasn’t drawn to making money. He was drawn to defending justice. He felt in many cases he was representing one person standing against the state. He was on the side of the underdog.”—Daniel Ellsberg

For half a century, criminal defense lawyer Leonard Weinglass defended a who’s who of the twentieth-century left in some of America’s most spectacular trials. “The typical call I get is one that starts by saying, ‘You’re the fifth attorney we’ve called,'” he once said. “Then I get interested.” Those calls came from the likes of the SDS, the Chicago Seven, Daniel Ellsberg, Abbie Hoffman, and Mumia Abu-Jamal, among many others.

In a field dominated by egomaniacs, Weinglass was known for his humility, his common touch, his ability to work collectively, his kindness, and his attention to detail. This long-overdue biography captures the vibrant life and inspiring legacy of an American iconoclast.

Seth Tobocman is an author/illustrator and one of the founding editors of World War 3 Illustrated.

Paul Buhle is the editor of a dozen comic art books along with many scholarly works, including the authorized biography of C.L.R. James.

What the cheering crowd couldn’t know then was what it took to get there. An Olympic Dream follows Omar’s second attempt to represent her country at the Olympics, this time in London. Summary:

In Munch, writer and artist Steffen Kverneland brings the story of one of the world’s most influential painters to vivid life. This extraordinary, inventive graphic novel uses text drawn exclusively from the quotes of Edvard Munch and his contemporaries. Filled with authenticity and life, Munch debunks the familiar myth of the half-mad expressionist painter—anguished, starving, and ill-treated—and draws out his neglected sense of humor and optimism. Born out of a lifelong fascination with Munch’s life and work, Kverneland’s seven-year project is a landmark of graphic biography and the funniest, most entertaining portrait yet of a complex man and the pioneering artist behind The Scream.munch sample

He is the illustrator of the full-length comic in Billionaires & Ballot Bandits: How to Steal an Election in 9 Easy Steps, written by Greg Palast, and the author and illustrator of the graphic biography, Snowden.

Author Residence: East Hampton, NY

Author Hometown: Dayton, OH

Summary: The only graphic biography of the Presidential contender out in time for the Democratic debates, and created by an award-winning political cartoonist.

Bernie Sanders puzzles the establishment. A self-identified socialist, long affiliated with neither the Democratic no Republican parties, from the tiny state of Vermont, Sanders has been relentlessly marginalized and ridiculed by the national political power brokers and the media that supports them.

And yet here he is, barely a month into his campaign against the “inevitable” Hillary Rodham Clinton, and he is already posting a credible threat to her in Iowa and New Hampshire, the two first, very important, primary contests. Not to mention, he’s doing it on a shoestring budget.

Who is Bernie Sanders? What accounts for his seemingly overnight rise from marginal figure to national player?

The Sanders story is about the credibility that, ironically, derives from years of marginalization. As progressives and liberals who once formed the base of the Democratic Party look for an alternative to Clinton’s corporate-friendly, war-mongering policies, Sanders is perfectly positioned to step into the vacuum.

Ted Rall’s Bernie explores the personal and political development of a man who threatens to shake up the 2016 presidential campaign, redefine the left wing of the Democratic Party, and, win or lose, set a new benchmark for a revived progressivism within a party that has rejected it for half a century.

Summary: As broad as our growing cultural fascination with caped crusaders is, it runs just as deep, as this anthology underscores. Liesa Mignogna, the VP, Editorial Director at Simon Pulse, and editor of this anthology can expound on the virtues of Batman (her wedding was even Batman-themed) but it’s her retelling of incredibly harrowing yet ultimately inspiring encounters with The Dark Knight over the years, as she struggled to coexist with the supervillains in her own family, that birthed this collection.

Last Night, A Superhero Saved My Life gives readers the chance to connect to their beloved authors, while those same authors connect to their beloved superheroes, and within that feedback loop of respect and admiration lies a stellar and phenomenally accessible anthology full of thrills, chills, and spills.

Contributors include New York Times bestsellers Christopher Golden, Leigh Bardugo, Brad Meltzer, Neil Gaiman, Carrie Vaughn, Jodi Picoult, and Jamie Ford, as well as award-winners and mainstays like Joe R. Lansdale, Austin Grossman, and Ron Currie, Jr. among many others. Summary: As many as 1.4 million citizens with security clearance saw some or all of the same documents revealed by Edward Snowden. Why did he, and no one else, decide to step forward and take on the risks associated with becoming a whistleblower and then a fugitive? Rall delves into Snowden’s early life and work experience, his personality, and the larger issues of privacy, new surveillance technologies, and the recent history of government intrusion. Rall describes Snowden’s political vision and hopes for the future. In a way, the book tells two stories: Snowden’s and a larger one that describes all of us on the threshold of tremendous technological upheaval and political change.

Snowden is a portrait of a brave young man standing up to the most powerful government in the world and, if not winning, at least reaching a stand-off, and in this way is an incitation to us all to measure our courage and listen to our consciences in asking ourselves what we might have done in his shoes.snowden sample

Summary: A graphic novel of the dramatic life and death of German revolutionary Rosa Luxemburg

A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. To Marx’s biographer Franz Mehring, no one came as close to the towering intellect of Marx himself. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life – her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art.

Always opposed to the First World War, when others on the German left were swept up on a tide of nationalism, she was imprisoned and murdered in 1919 fighting for a revolution she knew to be doomed.

Red Rosa gives Luxemburg her due as a radical and human being. In this beautifully drawn work of graphic biography, writer and artist Kate Evans has opened up her subject’s intellectual world to a new audience, grounding Luxemburg’s ideas in the realities of an inspirational and deeply affecting life.rosa sample

Contributor Bio: Riad Sattouf is a best-selling cartoonist and filmmaker who grew up in Syria, Libya, and Algeria, and now lives in Paris. The author of four comics series in France and a weekly column in the satirical publication Charlie Hebdo, Sattouf also directed the films The French Kissers and Jacky in the Women’s Kingdom. The Arab of the Future is his first work to appear in English.

Summary: In striking, virtuoso graphic style that captures both the immediacy of childhood and the fervor of political idealism, Riad Sattouf recounts his nomadic childhood growing up in rural France, Gaddafi’s Libya, and Assad’s Syria–but always under the roof of his father, a Syrian Pan-Arabist who drags his family along in his pursuit of grandiose dreams for the Arab nation.
Riad, delicate and wide-eyed, follows in the trail of his mismatched parents; his mother, a bookish French student, is as modest as his father is flamboyant. Venturing first to the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab State and then joining the family tribe in Homs, Syria, they hold fast to the vision of the paradise that always lies just around the corner. And hold they do, though food is scarce, children kill dogs for sport, and with locks banned, the Sattoufs come home one day to discover another family occupying their apartment. The ultimate outsider, Riad, with his flowing blond hair, is called the ultimate insult… Jewish. And in no time at all, his father has come up with yet another grand plan, moving from building a new people to building his own great palace.
Brimming with life and dark humor, The Arab of the Future reveals the truth and texture of one eccentric family in an absurd Middle East, and also introduces a master cartoonist in a work destined to stand alongside Maus and Persepolis.

Abraham Kawa is a writer and cultural studies theorist in Greece. His academic work focuses on graphic novels, cinema, and genre fiction.

Annie Di Donna has been an animator on many international productions. She works as an art director and colorist for graphic novels.

Summary: From the team behind the international phenomenon Logicomix—which was on the New York Times bestseller list for ten weeks, won numerous international prizes, and to date has been sold into more than twenty-five languages—comes a new graphic novel, Democracy, written and illustrated by Alecos Papadatos and in collaboration with Abraham Kawa.

Democracy opens in 490 B.C., when Athens is at war. The hero of the story, Leander, is trying to rouse his comrades for the morrow’s battle against a far mightier enemy. Leander begins to recount his own life, bearing direct witness to the evils of the old tyrannical regimes and to the birth of a new political system. The story that emerges, of the death of the gods and the tortuous birth of democracy, is crammed with extraordinary characters and tells in incident and vivid detail how this greatest of civic inventions came about. We see that democracy was born through a combination of chance and historical contingency—but also through the cunning, courage, and willful action of a group of highly talented and driven individuals.democracy sample

Author Residence: Angoulême , France

Summary: A graphic novel that delivers a behind-the-scenes look at five of the most popular narrative radio shows on the airwaves today, including This American Life and RadioLab.

Every week, millions of devoted fans tune in to This American Life, The Moth, Radiolab, Planet Money, Snap Judgment, and other narrative radio shows. The pieces that we hear are captivating, funny, heartbreaking, and moving. They use personal stories to illuminate big ideas, to explore other worlds, and to help us understand ourselves just a bit better. Though the shows have very different styles, they all deliver stories that are brilliantly told and produced. Out on the Wire is an exploration of this new storytelling that is regularly captivating radio listeners.

With the help of This American Life’s Ira Glass, Jessica Abel, a cartoonist and devoted fan of narrative radio, goes behind the scenes at five of the most popular storytelling shows on the radio to look at the ways that they construct a narrative—and we get some great insider details. Within these pages, we listen to Jad Abumrad of RadioLab talk about chasing moments of awe with scientists, we hear Robert Smith of Planet Money talk about his slightly goofy strategy for making interviewees feel comfortable, and we see how mad—really mad—Ira Glass of TAL becomes when he receives edits from his colleagues. Out on the Wire is informative, funny, and engaging, and it demonstrates that in the midst of all the other media that consumes us, radio is still very much alive.wire abel

Summary: Graphic true-life spy thriller about the CIA mission that overthrew Iran’s democracy

The year is 1953. As the value of oil skyrockets, global power brokers begin to take interest in the political regimes of the Middle East. British agents have controlled Iranian oil exports for a generation, but the Shah’s hold on peace is shaky as a charismatic leader enters the scene.

Mohammed Mossadegh’s calls to overthrow the elites resonates among the people, and as rumors circulate of an impending revolt, American, British and Persian agents hatch plans of overthrow. Deals are made behind closed doors. Every actor has a stake. Iran’s oil will flow, by any means necessary.

Operation Ajax is the story of the CIA coup that removed the democratically elected Mossadegh and reinstated the monarchy. Introduced by New York Times–bestselling author of All the Shah’s Men, Stephen Kinzer, Operation Ajax is a thrilling tale of real-life intrigue.ajax sample

He is a political cartoonist for the Guardian and has regular cartooning slots in the Literary Review and the New Statesman.

Summary:

Using the sepia tones of the Dust Bowl as his palette, author and artist Nick Hayes tells the story of world-famous folkie Woody Guthrie (1912–1967), starting in the 1920s when Guthrie was a teenager supporting himself in dried-up, post-boomtown Oklahoma. Picking up a harmonica and eventually a battered guitar, Guthrie finds solace in the ancient lineage of folksong. Hayes charts the musician’s course from Oklahoma and Texas towns ravaged by dust and the Depression to boxcars, factory farms, and the migrant camps of California, highlighting Guthrie’s dedication to singing American folk tunes and creating his own modern classics along the way. Hayes ends his portrait in 1940, at the pivotal time when Guthrie makes his way to New York and writes “This Land Is Your Land,” his iconic anthem tinged with both clear-eyed reality and optimism.guthrie sample

Summary: After spending two years in Ukraine and Russia, collecting the stories of the survivors and witnesses to Soviet rule, masterful Italian graphic novelist Igort was compelled to illuminate two shadowy moments in recent history: the Ukraine famine and the assassination of a Russian journalist. Now he brings those stories to new life with in-depth reporting and deep compassion.

In The Russian Notebooks, Igort investigates the murder of award-winning journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkoyskaya. Anna spoke out frequently against the Second Chechen War, criticizing Vladimir Putin. For her work, she was detained, poisoned, and ultimately murdered. Igort follows in her tracks, detailing Anna’s assassination and the stories of abuse, murder, abduction, and torture that Russia was so desperate to censor. In The Ukrainian Notebooks, Igort reaches further back in history and illustrates the events of the 1932 Holodomor. Little known outside of the Ukraine, the Holodomor was a government-sanctioned famine, a peacetime atrocity during Stalin’s rule that killed anywhere from 1.8 to twelve million ethnic Ukrainians. Told through interviews with the people who lived through it, Igort paints a harrowing picture of hunger and cruelty under Soviet rule.

With elegant brush strokes and a stark color palate, Igort has transcribed the words and emotions of his subjects, revealing their intelligence, humanity, and honesty—and exposing the secret world of the former USSR.

Author Hometown: Singapore

Summary: A brilliantly conceived graphic novel that tells the history of Singapore through the lens of its greatest—though not entirely successful—comic book artist.

Meet Charlie Chan Hock Chye, the greatest comic book artist you’ve probably never heard of. When he started making comics in Singapore as a boy of 16 in 1954, Chan expected fame and fortune to quickly follow. But just as Singapore’s road to independence would be full of twists and turns, so too would Chan’s own journey as an artist. Splicing together a dizzying array of art styles, genres and forms, Sonny Liew’s multilayered graphic novel is a celebration of life, comics and storytelling. The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye is a witty and innovative work that challenges the possibilities of the comics medium, creating a double-edged history, pulsing with the tensions and wonders of lived experience, its friendships, first loves and heartaches.

This is indeed the stuff that graphic novels are made of. Superheroes are the biggest comic genre of all, with many heroes having their origins in biblical characterization and imagery. This is the first Bible retelling to engage with the superhero genre. The Lion Comic Book Bible is a dynamic expression of the Bible’s depth and power, produced in the style of Marvel Comics. You’ve heard of Spiderman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. Now meet Earthman, Lawman, Warrior Man, and many others. Summary:

An incredibly unique comic book benefit project featuring comic shorts, pin-ups, short essays, and flash fiction, the proceeds of which will be going to the Innocence Project

We’ve all seen the pictures: a six-year-old Ruby Bridges being escorted by U.S. marshals on her first day at an all-white, New Orleans school in 1960; a police dog attacking a demonstrator in Birmingham; fire hoses turned on protesters; Martin Luther King Jr. addressing a crowd on the National Mall. These pictures were printed in papers, flashed across television screens, and helped to change the laws of this nation, but not necessarily all of the attitudes. Similarly, we’ve seen the pictures of Michael Brown lying face down in a pool of his own blood for hours; protesters with their hands up, facing down militarized policemen. There are videos of Eric Garner choked to death, John Crawford III shot down in Walmart for carrying a toy gun, and 12-year-old Tamir Rice gunned down in broad daylight for the same reason. APB: Artists Against Police Brutality is a benefit comic book anthology that focuses on hot-button issues including police brutality, the justice system, and civil rights, with one primary goal: show pictures and tell stories that get people talking. The proceeds will go to the Innocence Project, an organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people.apb sample

Contributor Bio:

Carol Tyler is an award-winning cartoonist from Cincinnati, OH, whose autobiographical stories reflect her struggles as an artist, worker, daughter, wife, and mother.

Summary: Soldier’s Heart is a sophisticated graphic masterpiece about the damaging effects of war on soldiers and the toll it can take on families.

Many soldiers come back from war and never talk about it — especially those from the Greatest Generation. Thus was the case with S/Sgt. Charles W. Tyler, who late in life began to open up to his daughter Carol. By looking at him, you would never know that he was wounded in combat, but as she states at the beginning: “Not all scars are visible.”

The narrative unfolds over 364 pages of masterfully crafted drawings. Stunning ink and color washes weave through the decades: Tyler examines the past in sepia, confronts reality in stark black & white and uses rich color to convey the moods and fragility of the present. She overlays her father’s memories with her own, while struggling to understand her troubled life: a failed marriage, a teenage daughter on the edge, and an elderly father and mother. Literate, emotionally engaging and historically accurate, Soldier’s Heart is a magnificent achievement.

Soldier’s Heart collects Tyler’s hardcover series You’ll Never Know, serialized between 2009 and 2012, and contains nearly thirty new pages of additional content.

Summary:
The essential primer on African American history, from the Middle Passage to Ferguson, Missouri

In Three-Fifths a Man, the award-winning and bestselling team of Sid Jacobson and Ernie Colón highlights the key events in African American history, taking us from the sixteenth-century Atlantic slave trade to the election of Barack Obama and the #BlackLivesMatter movement. Through richly drawn four-color illustrations and concise, accessible chapters, Jacobson and Colón convey a history of hardship and hope–a painful and necessary process, full of victories and setbacks, from theAmistad mutiny and the Three-Fifths Compromise to Brown v. Board of Education and the Scottsboro Boys. We see the first African slaves arriving in Jamestown in 1619, watch as the “peculiar institution” undermines our founding ideals, witness the triumph of the Union in the Civil War, followed by the collapse of Reconstruction in the South, and observe the hard-won progress of the civil rights movement.

Jacobson and Colón also explore the pivotal moments in American history with attention to the major contributions of African Americans, reshaping our understanding of the American Revolution, the New Deal, and more. And a series of profiles of prominent African Americans provides key information about these leaders, who exposed injustice, championed freedom, and pushed for change. With vivid illustrations and lucid prose, Three-Fifths a Man brings history to life as only the graphic form can.

  1. I’m trying to think what was the first American non-fiction comic book (as opposed to strip).
    Lynn Ward, maybe?

  2. Ugh, Ted Rall on Bernie Sanders…

Omaha Beach on D-Day was an amazing read! Short, but fascinating, especially the back matter behind the scenes stories.

Did you forget about TRASHED by Derf? While it is somewhat fictional, there is a heavy biography sense to it, plus real life educational matter. Plus it’s an excellent read!

  3. Red Rosa was an interesting, well illustrated, but dense as hell read. Rewarding in a sense, because Rosa Luxembourg is slowly fading from the western consciousness for the most part, but is a figure who would fit in quite well in our modern world. I liked refreshing my knowledge on what she contributed to the greater world.

  4. Non-fiction comic book?
Good question. Lynn Ward wrote fiction (although I might be mistaken).
    Let me dig…
There is a biography of Al Smith, which was a comic strip and then published in a bound volume.
Texas History Movies also started as a comic strip, but gained popularity as a graphic novel.

    1941? True Comics. http://comicbookplus.com/?cid=1016
    1917? http://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=40623
    1911? http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?Entt=RDM405310&R=405310

As for Trashed, that got overlooked.
Edelweiss has it subject’d as “graphic novel”.
    I do recommend his work!

  5. Wonderful rundown. Someone told me at a recent convention that non-fiction comics are one place where cartoonists can actually make a middle class living. I think he was talking more about getting freelance assignments than original graphic novels, but still.

What the hell the superhero Bible is doing here, I can’t imagine.
