An Australian comics shop owner who was dressed as Spider-Man for his Free Comic Book Day festivities confronted a real life perp, who tried to steal a $150 X-Man Omnibus.

And yes, it was caught on the surveillance camera. Of course it was.

Michael Baulderstone, 45, owner of the Adelaide Comics Center, said he was dressed as Marvel comics character Spider-Man for Saturday’s international “free comic book day,” which promotes literacy, when a customer without a costume grabbed a $150 book, the “X-Man Omnibus,” from a window display, The Times of London reported Monday.

Another employee of the store, who was dressed as the Flash, and other customers, dressed as Jedi Knights, helped subdue the suspect until police arrived.

There is so much to parse from this story.

First off, had the man never heard of Amazon? That is where you go to steal omnibuses.

Also, it’s important to note that the perp was not wearing a costume. That means he’s a bad, bad man.

Finally, as the video shows, a real life Spider-Man’s crime solving would involve walking around holding a rucksack. Thank god Bendis is here to jazz things up.

Reader Maclaine Diemer alaerted us to this new Gorillaz video which, in addition to being just excellent, features a couple of guest stars. One is obvious — the star of many comic-bookical movies. The other — appearing at around the 4:00 mark — could be an homage to another well known character? Since this is the first part of an evolving story, perhaps this mysterious figure will be back in future installments. To be continued.

CARTOON COLLEGE is a documentary by Tara Wray and Josh Melrod about the Centre for Cartoon Studies. They’ve just released a new trailer, and while the film’s not finished yet, it is looking good.

Marvel was internally so pleased with the results that Kinsey has been written into the Marvel U. and will appear in Marvel’s first original webcomic, written by Ivan Brandon and with art by Nick Postic and edited by longtime webcomics mole John Barber. The webcomic launches today, we’re told, and will be ongoing.

Say what you will about Secret Invasion and “viral marketing”, Marvel’s marketing for this mini-series is at least bringing comics “events” up to speed with the new media atmosphere. We’re told Marvel teamed up with MySpace to get one Kinsey video featured on the video front page, garnering over 200,000 views. From reading the comments on Kinsey’s page a lot of people were following along just to sympathize with her prom plight and not just to find out about Skrulls. The jury is out on whether any of those 200K viewers will translate into comics readers, but you gotta give Marvel some points for fighting fire with fire.

But that leaves Marvel_b0y out in the cold. A Marvel insider, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of fanboy panties, said that “Marvel_b0y has been dealt with. He’s not Kinsey’s brother.”

Our guess? A viral campaign that didn’t go quite as well as planned. This one can be chalked up to as flinging stuff against the wall. Some of it sticks, some doesn’t.
