Zander Cannon has been hard at work on his series Kaijumax in 2015, which he writes, draws, colors and letters. He’s delivering odd, amusing, poignant stories about Godzilla-like creatures in a jail designed by men, the real monsters. I interviewed him about the series, how Oni Press makes for a good partner and more. How did you come up with the […]
As a medium that requires you to listen, music doesn’t seem like it would meld with traditional comic book storytelling. That assumption, however, has been challenged by a number of writers and artists who want to share their passion for music with comics readers. One such author is Jeffrey Burandt, who I spoke to about […]
Scott Pilgrim and Sixth Gun publisher Oni Press made waves a few months back when they announced the opening of their open submission program, which is notable for its focus on writers as well as artists. Today, at their SDCC panel, they gave a sobering update to all those hopeful scribes. More @OniPress stats (they love their […]
Today, Comic Book Resources broke the news that Oni Press would be publishing three new series. First up, Another Castle, which is written by Andrew Wheeler and features art by Paulina Ganucheau. “When Princess Misty is captured by the evil Badlug, she quickly mounts an escape and is nearly out the door when she discovers that her […]
The first issue the Invader Zim comics, based on Jhonen Vazquez’s cult cartoon, arrives on July 8th, and Oni is making a big deal out of it because…well it is a big deal. The alien conqueror’s return will be celebrated in several ways: A panel The Return of Invader Zim, Saturday 7/11 at 2 pm in Room […]
A month or so ago, Oni Press announced that they would start taking Open Submission for new series. This essentially means that ANYONE can send them a comic pitch and someone will eventually look at it. Not too much else was discussed, but it certainly caused a buzz. Today, Oni Press posted their submission guidelines for their first wave and the date when people can let loose the floodgates.
Welcome to MATT CHATS, a weekly interview series in which I talk to a creator, consumer or seller of comics. This week I spoke with Gabriel “Gabo” Bautista, who is working on several projects right now including The Life After for Oni Press and Albert the Alien for Thrillbent. During that time he also managed […]
Two more of Oni’s clever March Madness PR event with two more new books announced: • Lion of Rora is a graphic novel by Christos Gage (Netflix’s Daredevil, Avengers Academy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Nine), Ruth Fletcher Gage (Netflix’s Daredevil, Law and Order: SVU), and Jackie Lewis comes out on August 5th. It’s based […]
We’ve covered Oyster War here quite a bit, Ben Towle’s historical fantasy webcomic about 19th century Chesapeake bay oystermen engaged in a territory war with some magical assistance— it’s part Scalped, part Sailor Twain. Towle alluded to a print publisher a while and ago and Oni just made it official: the print, color version is coming in September for SPX! Towle is a three time Eisner nominee for books like his Amelia Earhart bio, and this is a fun, frolic of a book.
More Oni Press news! Jen van Meter’s Hopeless Savages, a family drama about the kids of a punk rock family growing up and coming of age, has run since 2000, a very early example of a comics genre now common. Along the way it picked up some pretty amazing artistic collaborators in Christine Norrie, Chynna Clugston, Andi Watson, Bryan Lee O’Malley, and Vera Brosgol. Now it’s back in an updated story with older character. Van Meter writes, Meredith McClaren draws, and original artist Christine Norrie does the flashbacks.
