In recent years there has been great sadness in the Buffyverse — and some hurt feelings among two of the biggest comics publishers — that somehow the licenses for all the various Buffy spin-offs have been sundered from the main book. Angel and Spike have been most recently published by IDW, while the main Buffy saga has been continuing under Joss Whedon at Dark Horse to great acclaim and sales. But in the Riley one-shot released today, editor Scott Allie hinted that Angel would be coming back to the Horse, something every news site picked up on. But evidently that was not how it was meant to be played out. Dark Horse has released a statement confirming that in 2011, Angel is coming back:

Dark Horse’s Angel will bring the beloved characters from Whedon’s longest-running shows under one roof, allowing for new and exciting explorations of the Buffyverse featuring favorites from the casts of both series.

“I’ve always regretted letting Angel go in the first place,” Dark Horse senior managing editor Scott Allie said. “So we’re really excited about getting him back, as well as all his supporting cast. It’s necessary for how Joss wants to handle season nine, details of which will start spilling out in the months to come. Right now, we’ve got to wrap up season eight, and IDW still has a good long run of books before season nine starts.”

IDW’s Angel run will wrap up with a six-issue run starting in November and will connect to the DH version.

In their own statement, IDW confirmed all the above , but added some hurt feelings for how the news got out:

News of the upcoming change was recently revealed by Dark Horse Publishing, without coordination with IDW. “Dark Horse really regrets that this news was released before a joint statement from both companies was issued,” said Dark Horse Senior Editor Scott Allie. “Behind the scenes, we’d been working closely with IDW to ensure that the hand-off went smoothly. It was never our intent to catch Angel or IDW readers unaware. We’ve been working directly with Chris, Mariah and Brian on the interaction and the overlap between the storylines, and we think it’s gonna be a lot of fun for everyone.”

This leaves SPIKE still at IDW, who are launching it as a new ongoing. The plan is for storylines to coordinate across publishing lines:

Starting in October, Brian Lynch and Franco Urru’s ongoing SPIKE series furthers the coordinated storylines. Not only does BUFFY “Scooby Team” member Willow appear in an upcoming issue of SPIKE, but the series will also explain how Spike appeared in BUFFY in a spaceship accompanied by giant alien bugs.

In addition to the storylines being told in ANGEL and SPIKE, November’s ILLYRIA miniseries by Scott Tipton and ongoing ANGEL artist Elena Casagrande will offer further ties with the two ongoing series, even as it vastly complicates the life of its title character.

So it’s all still a bit confusing, and the license is still cut up, but clearly everyone is trying to make the fans happy.

STARSTRUCK, the eccentric space opera comedy by Elaine Lee and Wm. Michael Kaluta has led a varied multimedia history — while it’s now coming out as a periodical comic from IDW, it started out as a stage play by Lee. Now it’s going back to its roots with a new audio play that will be available on compact disc and broadcast radio. PR below and a copy of Kaluta’s cover (click for larger version) above:

Hot on the heels of IDW Publishing’s successful re-launch, Elaine Lee and Michael Kaluta’s science fiction comedy masterpiece comes to the world of audio theatre as The AudioComics Company, in association with Portland Community Radio WMPG, announces that its debut production of Starstruck will be available October 31 on compact disc and pay-per-MP3 download, and will air on selected radio stations in the United States.

The audio adaptation of the original off-Broadway production was adapted for the medium of audio by co-creator Elaine Lee, and directed by AudioComics Company co-founder William Dufris. With Ms. Lee as AudioComics’ guest for the weekend, Starstruck recorded at The Studio in Portland, ME May 7 – 9, and was mastered by Gateway Mastering, whose client list includes The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. The recording also employs Dwight Dixon’s re-recorded music from the original 1980’s stage productions, as well as several new compositions. Cast members include noted audio book narrators Tavia Glibert and Simon Vance, and the voice of MTV’s Æon Flux, Denise Poirier.

The basis for the comic book series, Starstruck was first presented off-Broadway in 1980, and again in 1983. In a far-flung and very alternative future, Captain Galatia 9 and the crew of the Harpy are on a mission for the United Federation of Female Freedom Fighters. When the Harpy runs into a living ship inhabited by a team of galactic evildoers, including Galatia’s insidious sister Verloona Ti, the outcome of the battle may well decide the fate of the free universe. Often hilarious, always surprising, Starstruck is a spine-tingling joy-ride to the far side of the spiral arm!

The forthcoming two-disc CD of Starstruck for $22.95, and the pay-per-MP3 download for $12.95 will be available October 31, 2010. Compact discs will be available for pre-order to the public exclusively through www.audiocomicscompany.com beginning September 1, 2010. Compact discs and pay-per-MP3’s will also be available through CD Baby, iTunes, The Spoken Network, and ZBS.

About AudioComics: Under the direction of Lance Roger Axt and William Dufris, The AudioComics Company provides superior audio entertainment with its professional full-cast audio theatre adaptations of licensed and original properties from the world of comic books, graphic novels, and more. Our productions of classic, contemporary and world premiere properties will reach new audiences far beyond readers and comic book fans through the universally popular entertainment medium of multi-track recorded sound and music on CD and in downloadable form, accessible in today’s market with today’s sound.

DC

Peter David will be writing episodes of the upcoming cartoon Young Justice, which is based on the comic of the same name that he wrote for an almost five-year run.

Also in comics to screen news, Geoff Johns will be writing an episode of the live action TV series Smallville, featuring Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. Meanwhile, the other way around, the popular Smallville character Chloe Sullivan will enter the DCU as a character in the new Jimmy Olsen backup series in ACTION COMICS, starting in #893.

DC brought the prop corpse of the alien Green Lantern Abin Sur from the upcoming GREEN LANTERN movie to Comic-Com and put it on display at the show. Pictures are available here. By the way, DC has unveiled the new GREEN LANTERN movie logo.

Marvel

Not to be outdone, Marvel has unveiled the first look at the movie logo on its new THE AVENGERS site.

Four anime series produced by Mad House and based on Marvel comics titles will come out on G4TV next year. The Iron Man, X-Men, Wolverine and Blade anime series were announced last year at Comic-Con, but this is the first time that anyone has learned which American television channel would be airing the cartoons. Iron Man will appear in Japan on October 1.

It was announced Sunday that Joss Whedon’s THE AVENGERS movie has added Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye to its cast of superheroes. In other movie news, Marvel also announced they have regained the film rights to their comic THE PUNISHER.

COWBOYS & ALIENS

Jon Favreau announced that this upcoming movie will be filmed and shown entirely in 2-D, despite being based on a comic! A revelation, I know. Are they even allowed to do that?

Dark Horse

Hot on the heels of its successful Conan, Kull and Solomon Kane comics, Dark Horse has announced a new title of works from the same author: ROBERT E. HOWARD’S SAVAGE SWORD, featuring Howard heroes such as Dark Agnes, El Borak, Sailor Steve Costigan, and Bran Mak Morn. Launching in December, each part will be 80 pages in length and perfect bound.

IDW

IDW announced (on Saturday) that they will be reprinting John Byrne’s NEXT MEN comics series, which ran during the early ’90s. The series ran for thirty issues and a prequel.

Avatar

Avatar has announced that its series CROSSED, which premiered as two miniseries, will now become an ongoing series entitled CROSSED: BADLANDS. The first story arc will be written by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows. The second story arc will be written by Jamie Delano. There will also be a CROSSED 3D graphic novel created by David Lapham and Gianluca Paliarini. CROSSED is set in a future in which a disease renders its victims utterly immoral, and also marks their faces with a distinctive red cross.

Given that pretty much all of the Spartans died at the Battle of Thermopylae — which was sort of the point — people have been speculating for years about how Frank Miller would wring a sequel out of his hit Dark Horse graphic novel and movie 300. Today, at Comic-Con, the answer came out. The sequel, XERXES, will actually take place at exactly the same time on another battlefield of the same war. 300’s director Zach Snyder revealed he is already working on a film script based on Miller’s upcoming graphic novel.

Meanwhile, Dark Horse released a never-before-seen clip from the in-progress animated movie based on Eric Powell’s THE GOON. The clip, which is several minutes long and contains a complete comedic scene, can be seen here. The movie’s producers are still seeking a studio to support the project.

Image

At the Image panel, it was announced that Marc Guggenheim is starting a new imprint, Collider Entertainment, for comics written by Hollywood scriptwriters without intending them to become movies. For extra novelty value, the projects are supposed to be original, and not repurposed spec scripts as is often the case. The first two comics from this line will be UTOPIAN, written by Guggenheim and his wife Tara Butters, a scriptwriter for REAPER, about a world in which heroes have become obsolete. The second, by Erich and John Hoeber, the screenwriters of the upcoming comics movie RED, is called THE MISSION, and is about a man commanded by possibly divine voices to kill people.

It was also announced that the upcomingWalking Dead television show based on Robert Kirkman’s hit Image comic will feature writing from none other than Kirkman himself.

Top Shelf

A sequel was announced for Jeffrey Brown’s cult classic giant-robots parody, THE INCREDIBLE CHANGE-BOTS. THE INCREDIBLE CHANGE-BOTS TWO will come out from Top Shelf and feature an amnesiac villain and lots of intentionally disposable new characters.

Also, art was revealed for the much anticipated LEAGUES OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN Vol.3: CENTURY #2 1969 from Kevin O’Neill and Alan Moore.

IDW’s Library of American Comics expands with more Alex Raymond as Jungle Jim and Flash Gordon, two stylish, definitive strips will be reprinted in a deluxe volume in 2011. PR below:

IDW Publishing, a premier publisher of graphic novels and books, today announced the Ultimate Alex Raymond Collection: The Definitive Flash Gordon and Jungle Jim, offering two timeless series together for the first time. The Definitive Flash Gordon & Jungle Jim will include every Sunday by Raymond from both classic strips, remastered, restored, and presented in the oversized, 12” x 16” “champagne” edition format.

“Alex Raymond’s lush art deserves this oversized, remastered series,” says Greg Goldstein, IDW’s COO. Coming in late 2011 and announced today at San Diego Comic-Con, this is the latest offering from Raymond, the quintessential adventure comic strip creator, by IDW’s imprint, Library of American Comics. The artist’s post-war modernist detective series, Rip Kirby, is currently being collected.

Eisner Award-winner Dean Mullaney is editing and designing the deluxe editions. “Although Flash Gordon has been previously reprinted, this—finally—is the first meticulously remastered and restored edition that prints the strip in a large size and in Raymond’s original format that includes the Jungle Jim topper. We believe this will be the definitive edition for the ages.”

Created by Raymond in 1934, Flash Gordon is arguably the most famous science fiction comic strip of all time. It follows the adventures of the title character and his companions—Dale Arden and Dr. Zarkov—as they journey through space. Flash initially leaves Earth to discover the source of meteors that are threatening the planet, and gets waylaid on the planet Mongo, where they meet the evil Ming the Merciless. Raymond’s lyrical artwork made the series a hit from the very beginning. Flash Gordon gained greater fame through several film serials in 1936 staring Buster Crabbe in the lead role. The serial followed the progression of the strip closely and helped inspire Star Wars many years later.

Jungle Jim was created as a strip topper for Flash Gordon, and followed the life of Jim Bradley, who fought pirates, slave traders, and assorted villains in the exotic Southeast Asia of the 1930s. This neglected Raymond classic also features Jim’s native cohort Kolu and femme fatale Lille DeVrille.

Raymond illustrated both series from January 7, 1934 through April 30, 1944.

Together, the moves suggest that IDW is serious about increasing their market share through renewed retail efforts.

IDW Publishing, a leader in graphic novel and book publishing, announced today that seasoned comic-industry marketing veteran Dirk Wood has joined the company as its first Director, Retail Marketing. Additionally, IDW’s first in-house marketing manager, AnnaMaria White, has been promoted to Director, Marketing and Public Relations.

“AnnaMaria has done an amazing job getting the word out about IDW books and has substantially increased our PR efforts and convention appearances,” said IDW CEO and Publisher, Ted Adams. “As IDW continues to grow, it became clear that we needed to expand our marketing team and particularly wanted to focus on direct market retailers and customers. When we made the decision to start looking for someone, there was no one we wanted to recruit more than Dirk. I’ve had the opportunity to get to know him over the last couple of years and he’s going to help us build our business in new and exciting ways.”

With over 16 years in the industry, Mr. Wood inaugurates the position of Director of Retail Marketing at IDW, bringing his extensive experience to the rapidly growing company. In this position, Mr. Wood will serve as the main contact for comic store retailers at IDW, expanding the company’s relationship with and presence within the direct market.

As Director of Marketing and PR, Ms. White will continue to grow IDW’s consumer marketing and outreach, oversee the company’s conventions and external messaging, and serve as the primary public relations contact.

Prior to joining IDW, Mr. Wood served as the Director of Communications for Dark Horse Comics, capping his nine-year career with the company. Mr. Wood was the Operations Manager for Things from Another World for seven years before transitioning to Dark Horse Comics.

“I couldn’t be more excited about joining the team at IDW. It’s been no secret for a while now that they’re a growing force in the Industry, and joining them at this stage of my career is a tremendous opportunity,” said Mr. Wood. “I want to thank Ted and the whole crew for welcoming me into the fold so graciously. I’ve always been a big supporter of the Direct Market, and I look forward to working with the retailers to ensure that IDW is a big part of their success for years to come.”

And then there were…five. Diamond has just announced that IDW will join Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse as a “premier publisher,” the first company to rise to that rank since the whole system was set up in 1996. Diamond will continue to act as IDW’s exclusive distributor to comics shops, and also to the book trade via Diamond Book Distributors. The cover of their Previews section in the next issue is shown above.

As a premier publisher, IDW will have access to Previews covers and get a slot in the front of the monthly catalog — a spot that gives them prime access to retailers making their monthly orders. Some of the deal points are laid out in the press release, but perhaps most importantly, they will retain their traditional “buy/sell” status, rather than changing to the brokered status which Marvel and DC have. IDW will also move to the “final order cut-off” system that allows retailers to adjust orders close to print date.

It’s a huge step for IDW, and a recognition of their growing status and continued quality of their line. In 2009, IDW was Diamond’s #4 publisher with a 3.49 percent unit share and 4.17 percent dollar share, just behind Dark Horse and ahead of Image. In 2008, they were the #5 publisher with 2.92 percent and 3.08 percent in those categories.

IDW’s growth has obviously been spurred by their smart handling of huge licensed franchises such as Star Trek, G.I. Joe, and Transformers, but in recent years, they’ve hugely expanded their publishing line with art books, children’s books, literary adaptations (The Last Unicorn) and they’ve increasingly picked up entire lines of books, such as Dean Mullaney’s Library of American Comics, Craig Yoe’s historical books, ComicMix’s webcomic collections, EA’s comics video game adaptations, and many more.

Diamond Comic Distributors and IDW Publishing announced today that IDW has become the first publisher to advance to “premier” status since the classification was implemented in 1996. Diamond and IDW have signed a new, multi-year agreement that features a number of fresh initiatives, including premier status, in recognition of IDW’s success as a top tier comic book and graphic novel publisher. Under the agreement, Diamond will continue to be the exclusive distributor of IDW comic books and graphic novels to the comic book specialty market, and to the bookstore market through its Diamond Book Distributors division.

“This change recognizes the growth and importance of IDW Publishing,” said Diamond President and CEO, Steve Geppi, “and we look forward to working with them for many years to come.”

Diamond VP Purchasing Bill Schanes added, “Since IDW began publishing, they have grown consistently each and every year, while at the same time establishing one of the best editorial, marketing, and business teams in our industry. They’re easy to work with, understand our market, and are forging ahead with new strategies and plans to grow the consumer appetite for comics and graphic novels.”

In April, Diamond’s PREVIEWS catalog and PREVIEWSworld.com website will showcase IDW’s new vendor status as the company moves to the “Premier Comics” section. IDW will have an exclusive section in the front of the catalog each month, highlighting their new offerings to comic shop retailers and customers.

“We are very pleased to have completed this groundbreaking agreement with Diamond,” said Ted Adams, CEO of IDW Publishing. “By combining Diamond’s leadership in distribution with IDW’s ten-plus years in developing, creating and marketing comic books and graphic novels, we have created an ideal relationship for each of our companies. The comic book medium is trending upward in all parts of consumer awareness and we are proud to be a partner with Diamond for the future.”

Key points to the agreement include:

Premier Publisher
Under the new agreement and as a result of the company’s consistently strong market share, IDW will have premier status within Diamond and Diamond’s PREVIEWS, including an exclusive section at the front of the monthly catalog.

Discount and Terms of Sales
IDW Publishing will remain in a traditional buy/sell relationship with Diamond, with their books continuing to be sold to comic shops under Diamond’s Terms of Sale (unlike Diamond’s brokerage arrangement with publishers like Marvel and DC Comics where Diamond acts as a sales agent). Discounts will remain unchanged at this time.

Final Order Cut-Off
IDW will be added to Diamond’s Final Order Cut-Off Program sometime in the near future. “Since IDW is a traditional buy/sell vendor, we have some programming work to do, but we expect to have that finalized later this year,” said Schanes.

Book Market Distribution
Diamond remains the exclusive book market distributor of IDW’s publishing efforts. “We’re extremely proud of the progress we’ve made in helping IDW grow its sales in the book store market over the last five years,” said Diamond Book Distributors VP Sales & Marketing, Kuo-Yu Liang. “From their strong licensed properties to their successful launch last year of the Worthwhile Books line for kids, IDW has adeptly shown what products will sell into the book market channel.”

We’re working on a relaunch of a couple classic movie franchises, a big crossover with 30 Days of Night; we have a couple of huge announcements in the works for some spring comic conventions, and are even putting together the very first IDW ‘event’ for later this year, too. And rounding out what we feel is a very well-rounded slate of things that we’re able to talk about now, we’re helping re-launch Famous Monsters of Filmland in July, which has us as excited as all the other fans of that magazine.

Adams talks about the dominance of event-driven comics, how to combat that, growth in bookstores and Amazon and the expanding digital world. His thoughts there show that he’s answering questions no other comics publisher is asking yet:

Who’s buying comics digitally?
I think it depends on the market. The PSP market is clearly a gamer. The device itself is designed in large measure just to play games. I think you’re talking about probably an audience that’s male, mid-to-late teens would be my guess. Sony has a lot of interesting demographic information although it doesn’t filter down all the way to who’s buying the comics. The PSP is a device that’s not just U.S.-based. We’re seeing some nice sales not just in the U.S. but also in the U.K. and Europe.

When you talk about the iPhone, I think it’s probably a little broader as far as the demographic goes.

The music-comics connection continues with WIRE HANGERS, a miniseries written by Alan Robert, bass player for Life of Agony and front man for Spoiler NYC. In true auteur fashion, Robert writes and illustrates the four-issue miniseries, due from IDW in April. (Covers are by Nelson DeCastro.) To get things going, the creators have announced a contest to put your face on a variant cover for issues #1. Go to the link and fill out your name and address, but hurry up, because the deadline is Friday.

Although best known for his music, in an interview with CBR Robert reveals much more comic book cred than your average nerdlebrity:

I’ve always wanted to be a comic book artist. I remember drawing black and white comics back in high school that I would photocopy and sell at a local Brooklyn comic shop. Yes, the content was pretty graphic back then, too! But, when I got really serious about it in the early ‘90s, I received a scholarship to study cartooning under Walt Simonson at SVA. I learned a hell of a lot about page layout and storytelling from him. Walt would bring in guest speakers all the time, including his wife Louise, who would share their knowledge about the comic industry and give us useful, practical tips about surviving in the field as freelance artists. It was a real eye opening experience, hearing stories from the mouths of these great comic book legends.

The first titles will appear in May. The stories will include brand-new material, adaptations of his past novels and offshoots of existing work.

“Comics could reach a much larger audience than they do right now,” says Patterson, who often works with co-authors and whose thrillers are frequently at or near the top of USA TODAY’s Best-Selling Books list. “With all of the quality work and talent that’s out there, this industry could be so much bigger.”

Our con kicked off with a press conference for Darwyn Cooke where he announced a series of four graphic novels adapting the first four PARKER novels by Richard Stark, aka Donald Westlake. Publisher IDW gave out a series of sweet duo-tone promo cards by Cooke that look as hard-boiled and crime-tastic as you would like. We’ll have a fuller story on the books in an upcoming issue of PW Comics Week.

In the spirit of full disclosure, we acted as a sounding board for IDW editor Scott Dunbier in setting up this event. As we’ve mentioned repeatedly here, it’s baffling that comic book companies don’t hold more press-only events at Comic-Cons. We asked a couple of other participants if they had been asked to any other comic book press conferences and no one could think of one (or else our acquaintances just aren’t asked to the right places).

Anyway, the books look very entertaining, and Cooke was born to draw amoral crime fiction. He also teased an announcement of his own creator-owned property later this year at Baltimore Con.

IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the addition of the newest member to the IDW team. Andy Schmidt has come onboard as the new Senior Editor. Andy will serve as a leader helming several licensed properties but also developing new projects.

Andy started his comics editing career with Marvel Comics under Executive Editor Tom Brevoort, where he quickly rose from assistant to full editor helming such projects as X-Men, X-Factor, Ms. Marvel, and Annihilation. He left Marvel in June of last year to launch his own successful comics-teaching business called Comics Experience and started freelance writing. His combination of skills makes him the perfect candidate for the Senior Editor position at IDW.

“What started as a casual conversation between Chris Ryall and myself about how we approach editing quickly became a job interview. My background is in editing, writing and teaching and Chris liked that combo—thought I’d bring a different voice to my projects,” Schmidt recalls. “Chris introduced me to Ted Adams and the three of us hit it off. IDW is in the storytelling business and has a rich history of exceptional comics created by exceptional creators. I’m glad to be a part of it!”

“Andy’s creative approach to the titles he works on, coupled with their sales success as well as his reputation amongst the creators he’s worked with all mark him as one of the best editors in this business,” said IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall. “I’m looking forward to putting Andy’s many strengths to good use here. He’s going to be a great addition to the team, which is ultimately going to be a huge boon for fans of our comics, too.”

Look for further announcements about Andy’s particular projects in the weeks ahead.
