Over the weekend, Tom Spurgeon spotlighted the return of two old school members to the Fantagraphics mansion with Mike Catron and Preston White joining as editor and designer, respectively. Catron is actually the co-founder of Fantagraphics, going back to the Virginia/Connecticut origins of the company as The Nostalgia Journal. White (who was known as “Peppy” in the olden days) was a designer for many of the seminal ’80s publications.

Although the hirings are notable in and of themselves, in an interview with Catron, the element of Catron’s life we’re most concerned with is briefly mentioned:

SPURGEON: I and others have seen you in recent years making tapes of some of the panels at conventions, I believe particularly those focused on older cartoonists. What led you to do that? Do you have plans for that material? Are there one or two panels or even moments that you’ve caught with which you’re particularly happy?

CATRON: What led me to start videotaping panels at comics conventions was that I didn’t see anyone else doing it. Here were all these important figures from the history of comics answering all sorts of questions and providing a wealth of detail about our comics heritage and it was all just being written on the wind. I started taping as a way of preserving as much as I could of that for myself and future generations. As for plans for that material, I have nothing currently in the works. Ultimately, I would like to find a useful way to share it. There are lots of moments that I’m very glad I caught on tape, including some quite emotional ones. Lots of funny stuff, too. Someday.

Catron is indeed that red-headed guy you have seen countless times taping comic book panels at various shows across the nation for more than 20 years. We’ve had many conversations with him about those tapes—they are one of the great priceless, irreplaceable treasures of comics history. Catron hasn’t been able to do much with them due to permissions and the like—presumably a lot of those are missing—and the collection isn’t that organized. We suggested getting some kids in from SVA or wherever to at least try to catalog them. Since Catron has moved to the West Coast, that might not be so easy now.

Hopefully that “someday” will come…someday.

While Jaime's story from volumes 3 and 4 "The Love Bunglers" has rightfully been held up as one of the greatest comics of all times, for a lighter course, this might be a suitable choice. (It’s weird to see the Onion AV Club list reprints of comic strips like Peanuts and Popeye in their “art comics” review section given that these strips were originally read by an audience two or three orders of magnitude larger than whoever is reading the “mainstream” comics. But that’s one of the paradoxes of culture for you.) I don’t think American comics will ever have a Stieg Larsson or Stephen King. I know even Art Spiegelman is now pining for more vulgar, populist fare to shake out some of the graphic novel stuffiness (which he realizes he himself is to a large degree responsible for!) but it may just not be in the cards. We may be stuck with comics as art.”

This month's release of the first volume of Fantagraphics' Carl Barks reprints is call for rejoicing. There have been many reprint projects centered on Barks' work, but they must have been designed by the three bears: one was too expensive, one was too cheap, one had garish color, and so on. This new effort -- reprinted in handsome hardcovers with simple coloring by Rich Tommaso that recalls the original limited coloring without a lot of fanfare.

I think a lot is going to be said as more of Barks' work becomes available in a world where the bodies of work of the great cartoonists are becoming increasingly available -- it is the golden age of the comics reprint, after all.
Well, the Beatrix gushed over their Spring 2012 titles, so I guess I’d better review the Fall titles from Fantagraphics.

First, let me say this won’t feature everything. I appreciate all the cool stuff they publish, but a lot of it just doesn’t interest me. You probably have different tastes, so feel free to comment down below. Here’s the FBI page for 2011 releases, so go take a look. Fanta also has a bargain bin, so you’ll probably find something in your price range! They also have special offers for new titles, so please take a look! (If you’re going to ship your book bucks to Washington, it’s better to send them to Fantagraphics than Amazon!) Click on the titles below to go to the official pages on the FBI website!

So, here’s what I find interesting.

For (what is hoped) the final time here on Coming Attractions:

My friend, the lovely Carolyn Kelly, lovingly supervised the loving restoration of her lovely father’s lovely strip and she also did the lovely design of this lovely book and its lovely dust jacket and the lovely imprints under that lovely dust jacket. Sure sounds like a labor of love to me. Not that the contents need any help but the strips are supplemented by a foreword from writer (and friend o’ Walt’s) Jimmy Breslin and essays/annotations by Steve Thompson, R.C. Harvey and myself. If I were you, I’d read all that text stuff after I read the strips themselves about eleven times.

Each volume contains two years of Walt Kelly’s magnum opus. Since the first year started in mid-year, there’s room in the book to also include the pre-syndication Pogo strips he did for The New York Star, a short-lived newspaper for which he worked. This gives you the chance to observe from Day One and watch as it develops steadfastly from a darn good newspaper strip to something a lot better than just “darn good.” Working on this collection, that was my constant thought: “Gee, it just gets better and better, doesn’t it?”

Although it looked whimsical enough, Pogo wasn’t afraid to jab hard on the political foibles of the day, and created such memorable characters as Albert the Alligator, Churchy La Femme, and Mam’selle Hepzibah. If you notice more than a bit of Kelly’s drawing style in Jeff Smith, well it’s no accident. Pogo’s return in a new collection is happy news indeed.

Remember all that fuss about R. Crumb’s Genesis? Jack Jackson was doing that sort of thing back in the 1990s. Doing it so well, that the Texas Historical Association awarded him a lifetime fellowship. He produced one of the first underground comics in 1964, and co-founded Rip Off Press. He deserves more attention and recognition from comics fans and historians, and I hope this book does that. If you can find copies of past editions, read them now! His research, both written and visual, is so precise that he once engaged in a written war over criticism of perceived inaccuracy and racism in Lost Cause! You can read his interview here, at the Comics Journal.

Ut oh… looks like I have a reason to buy something from Bluewater.

Okay… for those who don’t know about this amazing series, Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact was a Catholic-oriented biweekly distributed to parochial schools from 1946 to 1972. (Yeah, it’s the catholic Weekly Reader.) I’ve found a few copies in the dollar bins at shows, and it’s pretty tame fare. It’s not as … erm… parochial or pedantic as you might think. Safe, innocuous stories for kids, some of them quite amazing. For example, in 1964, they ran a ten-part story about a presidential candidate in 1976. Were there flying cars? Moon bases? Food pills? Nope, something even more outlandish and inconceivable! *SPOILER WARNING* Tim Pettigrew, the candidate, was BLACK. Written by Berry Reece and drawn by “Joltin” Joe Sinnott, it is just one example of the hidden and forgotten treasures in this series. (You can read the mini-series here.) Other notable creators: Reed Crandall, Graham Ingels, Joe Orlando, Murphy Anderson, and Jim Mooney. Yes, “Ghastly” Graham Ingels. Not too surprising, since this comic didn’t carry the Code Seal.

$ 3.99 for 32 pages… Volume 1, number 6… I suspect that this is a comic book which will later be collected. Random House, which owns Bantam Books, has distributed comics to shops, so this will probably be collected into a graphic novel later in 2012. Given the popularity of the television show, this is a smart move on Bantam’s part, if the books survive the rigors of shipping and display. Or maybe it’s just being sold online. The comic is produced with Dynamite Entertainment, which is publishing the single comics. I wonder how they are selling?

Fantagraphics announced at their panel Saturday that they will be republishing two comics classics which so far have yet to receive the deluxe treatment: the EC Comics library and a complete collection of the influential early indie anthology Zap Comix. The complete collection of Zap Comix, which was created by Robert Crumb, is two volumes and 800 pages long. EC Comics, however, was a comics industry stalwart for years before changes in comics forced it to close, and even a library of its highlights will be many volumes in length. Fantagraphics is approaching the project by organizing the material by creator and theme – the first four volumes will collect all of Harvey Kurtzman’s EC war stories, Wally Wood’s suspense comics, all of Al Williamson’s EC science fiction comics and Jack Davis’s EC horror comics.

Ah… July….The Fourth, dog days, and… San Diego!

So much good stuff! Bestselling author Christopher Moore writes a graphic novel! Ray Bradbury, Grandmaster, has two classics adapted! Grant Morrison writes about superheroes and religion! Disney and Hitler, together again! Girlie comics from Marvel! “Good Girl” comics from Jim Silke, Doug Sneyd, and Dean Yeagle! Great Women comics from Gail Simone, Colleen Coover, Megan Kelso, Jill Thompson, and Corinne Mucha! (Can’t find female creators on the newsstands? Check the bookshelves!) And lots of masterful work from Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, Jim Starlin, and Floyd Gottfredson!

The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in June 2011. This list is not comprehensive, just what I’ve discovered browsing the Internet.Below, you’ll find selected titles which caught my interest. If you would like to browse forthcoming graphic novels and related books at your leisure, click here. These are not necessarily titles I will purchase, but which I will definitely look at once they arrive at my local comics shop or bookstore. If you click that link above, you’ll see all the graphic novels at BN.com, sorted by date. Please be advised that publication dates are not set in stone, titles may change, and covers may be altered. Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library.I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic. If you feel I’ve neglected or slighted a title, publisher, or creator, please feel free to mention it in the comments below. Yes, you may promote your own work, but please include the ISBN for easy searching (and shopping!)

Disclaimer: I am employed by Barnes & Noble. This and any other posts by me at this site have no official connection to B&N. As always, feel free to send us your PR. Even better, send us some free books!

<s>Gary Groth has been tapped to play Christian Walker in Powers. Oops, wrong headline.</s>

Today’s slam dunk interview is Alex Dueben’s chat with Fantagraphics’ publisher Gary Groth, probably just because on the internet a frank discussion with a knowledgeable comics publishing figure is about as common as a humble moment from LeBron. Throw in that he has stellar vocabulary skills, and you have a winner.

For instance, on Borders

How has the Borders bankruptcy and their problems and the closing of stores affected the book trade?

I don’t think it’s affected us. I think whenever something happens like when Borders closes, something comes and fills that gap, even if that something is only Amazon. Borders didn’t affect us at all, because Borders didn’t buy many of our books. As you probably know, the book buyer at Borders was apparently obsessed with manga and bought almost exclusively manga. Of course it would have been nice to have been sold in Borders for all those years, but we weren’t. Trying to be sold in Borders was like beating our heads against a brick wall, so when they went under, we didn’t suffer at all. Barnes and Noble is still strong. We’re strong with independents. There are a number of chain stores in the South that we sell pretty well to, like Books-A-Million. Amazon is either the first or second largest seller of our books.

Many other tidbits, including that reprints of comics strips sell beter than new GNs (“Why that is, kind of puzzles me.”) and a plan to get all of Fantagraphics books into digital format in a year’s time.

Groth also gives his take on the Relaunch in typically blunt fashion:

It seems like a pitiful attempt to con more people into buying the same old shit. I probably shouldn’t be so cynical. I’m sure that some brilliant talent could breathe some life into this stuff. Like I said, I’m not one to talk. I haven’t read this stuff, but it just seems so completely uninteresting to me, and in a way, it’s idiomatically alien to me. We get a box of comics from DC every so often and I’ll look through it. Stylistically, the work kind of repels me. It’s too frenetic and manga-influenced. I’m way too old for that stuff. I wish I could be a more cogent commentator on that stuff, but then I’d have to devote time to actually looking at it.

Some might be puzzled by Groth’s description of DC’s art style as “manga-influenced,” however.

Ah... Memorial Day approaches, and with it, summer vacation. Day after day of nothing which must be done, but full of possibilities! Maybe an escape to the air-conditioned refuge of your local library. Perhaps a day spent on the porch, sipping something cold and sinful (I prefer Brown Cows, served in a large ice tea glass). Or maybe hiding away up in a hayloft, or deep in a cool root cellar, where no one can find you. Whatever your preference, there's nothing like a good book to make you forget the world around you.
Ah… Memorial Day approaches, and with it, summer vacation. Whatever your preference, there’s nothing like a good book to make you forget the world around you. Below are some suggestions for your summer reading pleasures. (And if you need a nap to avoid the afternoon heat, give your kids something to read. It’ll keep them quiet long enough for you to recharge your batteries.)

The following is a selection of new comics titles due to be published in June 2011. This list is not comprehensive, just what I’ve discovered browsing the Internet. Below, you’ll find selected titles which caught my interest.

Also, your local comics shop might receive copies before your local neighborhood website or library. I consider my tastes to be rather eclectic.

The cover hasn’t been released yet but a few preview images have.

Speaking of Kupperman, the long out of print TALES DESIGNED TO THRIZZLE #1 is available again for a limited time. Please consult a doctor before purchasing to make sure you are healthy enough to laugh uncontrollably for a moment or so.
