Yeah yeah, Walt Disney was a genius and a trailblazer and a visionary…but he was also a racist and a horrible sexist. The letter informing a woman applying for a job at the studio informing her that “Women do not do any of the creative work in connection with preparing the cartoons for the screen, as that work is performed entirely by young men. For this reason girls are not considered for the training school.” has been floating around for years, but recently a newspaper story by Disney biographer Bob Thomas laying out his ideas of women’s capabilities has been unearthed and it’s even worse.
This thing is going on with a new publisher called Joe Books, and the credits on Boom! Studio’s long ago (2010) Darkwing Duck series. Yes. The Outhouse has a succinct round-up but as best as I can make out, here’s what happened:
February 3rd will see the release of three Studio Ghibli films on BluRay for the first time. Porco Rosso, the tale of a World War I flying ace, is a beloved Hayao Miyazaki classic. The other two are by other Studio Ghibli directors—Isao Takahata’s environmental saga PomPoko, and Tales from Earthsea, Goro Myazakis take on […]
In case you had forgotten that Groot and Rocket Raccoon were Disney’s huge breakout stars in 2014, they released a trailer of the gentle giant of a man-tree saying his signature phrase in 15 different languages,. And in case you had forgotten, Guardians of the Galaxy is out on Digital HD today, and available via […]
Analysis: ‘Guardians’ rule the galaxy with biggest ever August opening, and Marvel keeps mining the head
Whoa, Guardians of the Galaxy…where to start. In a summer of unexceptional sequels and remakes, Marvel and Disney triumphed with a new creation that had a fresh take on the space opera genre, while introducing such comics elements as Thanos, Infinity Gems, and Rocket Raccoon. I never thought I would type that sentence outside of a fever dream.
Wanna know more about Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, the interactive SUper-hero themed game? You’re in luck. Disney Infinity has a bunch of activities planned including a pop-up shop on 4th street. Mac’s new Marge Simpson line also has a pop-up shop and surely there are others we haven’t heard of yet. In a perfect movie going world, we would have seen the brilliant “Hooked on a Feeling” Guardians of the Galaxy footage shown at Comic-Con last year and then known nothing more about the film until we sat down to see it on August 1. But this is not that world. Disney/Marvel is confident enough in […]
Big Hero 6 is this fall’s Disney big animated movie, so it’s hardly wanting for marketing and publicity, however, it is based on a VERY obscure Marvel Comics characters, and that has led to some head scratching. The film is being directed by Don Hall (Winnie the Pooh) and Chris Williams (Bolt) with a script […]
When someone thinks of the name “Disney,” many things can come to mind; Some may think of their theme parks. Some their animated films. Some may look back on fond childhood memories. And others might think of a cartoon mouse that wears pants, gloves, and shoes. But when I hear “Disney,” my first thought […]
I’ve been doing this daily comics news thing for 11 years, more or less, and if there is one thing which has remained consistent throughout those 11 years of comics industry tumult, it’s Stan Lee Media suing someone or something. I honestly don’t remember all the things they’ve sued, but it includes Stan Lee, Marvel (many times) Conan Properties, and Disney (many times). The suits usually claim that Stan Lee Media owns Spider-Man, or the Avengers or Conan or whatever someone is making a movie of, and the suits always involve insanely tortured legal claims over unrelated documents. The courts always rule against SLMi, as it’s called, but that doesn’t stop them. They keep coming back.
We all knew that the Star Wars comics franchise would go to Marvel eventually, but no one seems enthused about the idea. Maybe that’s because, as Graeme McMillan points out, every time Disney pulls one of its licenses and give it back to Marvel, it shrinks. Case in point: the Disney kids line that BOOM! […]
