Although you’d think he was busy enough drawing THE WALKING DEAD every month, artist Charlie Adlard occasionally has time to toss off something like CURSE OF THE WENDIGO (reviewed here) a horror comic written by French screenwriter Mathieu Missoffe and released in France in 2009. The story is set in World War I and finds French and German soldiers teaming up to fight a greater horror.

An American edition is out today from Dynamite, and here’s a preview:

Multi-talented Kyle Baker has been a little under the radar for a while. He’s working on some comics and animation proects, including, it seems, something called HOTWIRE written by Kevin McCarthy (EPOCH). Or as Baker put it: I think this is the cover. Looks like a comic about a flying girl with pink hair…we’re in.

Dynamite has provided us with the cover to the third part of their Charlaine Harris adaptation, by Benoit Springer.

This month’s release of the first volume of Fantagraphics’ Carl Barks reprints is call for rejoicing. There have been many reprint projects centered on Barks’ work, but they must have been designed by the three bears: one was too expensive, one was too cheap, one had garish color, and so on. This new effort — reprinted in handsome hardcovers with simple coloring by Rich Tommaso that recalls the original limited coloring without a lot of fanfare.

I think a lot is going to be said as more of Barks’ work becomes available in a world where the bodies of work of the great cartoonists are becoming increasingly available — it is the golden age of the comics reprint, after all. For now, this conversation between James Romberger and Gary Groth will serve as a good introduction.

With all the hubbub going on about the New 52, it’s ironic that this week also sees the release of a graphic novel that readers have been waiting for for over 25 years: New Teen Titans: Games

Marv Wolfman and George Perez revolutionized DC’s superhero line with their work on Teen Titans 30 years ago, and they were tapped to create an original graphic novel about the Titans — one of the first such projects at DC. Unfortunately, first came writer’s block on Wolfman’s part, then artist’s block on Perez’s, then various illnesses and publishing scheduling changes came and…bam! 25 years have passed.

Perez drew the first 60 pages of the book pack in the 80s, and it languished in a drawer for all this time, until over the last few years, he was able to get back to work on it. However, eye surgery last year caused one last delay…until this very day.

Games brings the band back together in a wide-ranging tale of a mysterious villain who draws the TItans into his machinations. Of the writing of the book and the time frame, Wolfman told CBR,/a>

Craig Thompson’ss incredible graphic novel HABIBI is coming out next week, and while very different thematically from BLANKETS, it shares Thompson’s emotionally resonent storytelling in which every line and word is part of the overall effect.

While the re-you-know-what by you-know-who has been sucking all the air and dollars out of the room, there are lots of other great comics on sale from other publishers this month, and it’s high time to get back to previewing them. One such book is THE BIG LIE #1 by Rick Veitch and Gary Ersksine, a highly provocative book about a woman who goes back in time to rescue her husband from the destruction of the World Trade Center. Along the way she uncovers some startling questions. Creator Veitch says he’s not a Truther — as are those who believe the 9/11 attacks were a government conspiracy — but as in this Huffington Post interview he believes in skepticism:

“Reading the 9/11 Commission Report, it’s pretty clear that a lot of important evidence about the lead-up to the attacks and the collapse of the towers was ignored or glossed over,” Veitch says. “And I’m pretty angry about the aftermath: how Iraq was invaded based on false intelligence and the occupation mismanaged resulting in over 100,000 civilian deaths.”

“If one scratches the surface of the commission report, one finds huge holes in the official story. There’s also a lot of disinformation out there and oddball conspiracy theories that need to be debunked. People who are paying attention are asking for a real in-depth investigation into all these nagging questions. That’s what our book is all about.”

Back when the deeds of Kyrax2 were making the rounds, we’d tagged a post we never got around to spotlighting by author Diane Duane, who lists her bio as “30+ years in print, 50+ novels, assorted TV and movie work, the NYT Bestseller List a few times, blah blah blah. Also: the Young Wizards series, 1983-2010 and beyond”–the kind of long-lasting, multimedia resume that superior writers build up. In a post on her blog about DC’s women troubles, Duane talked about being a comics reader and creator over the years:

They were split pretty evenly between DC and Epic. At DC they were almost all Star Trek — a pair of books here, a miniseries there, the occasional special thing — but there were occasional forays elsewhere (I still really wish that the Green Lantern Corps book hadn’t been axed just after I sold Bob Greenberger this script). The Epic work was for The Dreamery, where I did the “Tales of Prince Ivan the Not-So-Experienced” (SHAMELESS PLUG: coming later this year in a collection with the newly written addition, “Prince Ivan and the Bachelor Parties of Doom”). I enjoyed doing all of those so much. And even when I’m not doing comics, I’m writing about reading them (“In the Company of Heroes” over here is about how important they can be to have in your life) or otherwise having fun with them: one character in the Young Wizards books is an inveterate X-Men reader: another young wizard’s sister, unable to cope just yet with the issue of his wizardry, has (to his continuing great frustration) made up her mind that he’s actually a mutant. So it goes, for my “real world” is their “real world”, and my real world always has comics in it.

While this in itself is a perfect example of my “Invisible Women in Comics” theory, Duane also captures what it means to be a teenaged comics fan from an emotional standpoint:

It should be made clear here that back then — say between ages six and eighteen or so — I was way less concerned then about any possible question of female roles or female writers in comics than I was about the adventure, as suburban Long Island was pretty short of adventure to my way of thinking. What was important then was that there should be stories, stories that engaged and entertained me. Those comics were a lifeline, somewhere to be when my native world was annoying or dull. Without Metropolis or Gotham or Oa or Paradise Island (this was before Themyscira…), life would have sometimes been intolerable. I didn’t care whether the stories came from women, men, or people from elsewhere in Space Sector 2814, just so they kept coming and were worth reading.

Which is all by way of intro to the reprint referenced above, About Comics new edition of The Misadventure of Prince Ivan, due this October (Cover, above by Ken Macklin), which collects not only the original stories from Eclipse (not Epic as Duane wrote) but an all new 28-page story by Duane and the original artist Sherlock. According to publisher Nat Gertler

This twisted version of the classic Russian folk story was a forerunner to Shrek in many ways, a wacky take on fairy tales and the characters who inhabit them. The story was serialized across half a dozen issues of the Eclipse Comics anthology The Dreamery, and there it had remained, uncollected and unseen by most of Duane’s growing base fans…until now.

In the lead story, “The Adventures of Prince Ivan”, the shy young prince meets and marries the beautiful warrior princess Marya Morevna, and they go off to live in her castle, a pleasant place but for the one room which the prince is forbidden to visit. If the prince merely followed that simple rule, the story could have ended with a “happily ever after” right there… but then, it wouldn’t be much of a story.

In the new sequel story “Prince Ivan and the Bachelor Parties of Doom”, Ivan and Marya Morevna realize that they had simply rushed through the whole wedding process and had never celebrated it properly. When it comes time for the appropriate parties, however, the prince and princess enemies have plans of their own. With a talking donkey, a magic cockroach, exploding pizzas, and more, they’re either having a battle or a really good party. Maybe both.

In a cover letter to the PR, Gertler notes that About Comics has always been female inclusive, publishing early work by Faith Erin Hicks, Justine Shaw, Carla Speed McNeil, Janine Johnston, Jett Atwood, Svetlana Chmakova, and as well as collections by Lela Dowling and Gail Simone (You’ll All Be Sorry, an essential work in the Simone canon.)

Via BOOM!’s mailing list, Chip Mosher has a pretty clear suggestion that shows just how publishers are living on a copy here and a copy there. With DC’s massive relaunch coming up a lot of retailer dollars are going to be tied up elsewhere so a book like Roger Langridge’s SNARKED needs every little boost:

So I wanted to ask you all to do me a favor… and that is to make sure you are pre-ordering your books from your local comic shop or online retailer. If you don’t have a subscription or pull list, and you are a comics fan, please take the time to work with your local comic shop to get one. By pre-ordering your comics with your local retailer you make it easier for them to know what to order for their store and run their business better. This isn’t just true for BOOM! Studios comics and trades, but for every publisher and every store. It’s just a very helpful thing to do!
