Gotta support the man. The trade collection has the sweet cover by Jock and an intro by Andy Diggle.

The Small Press Expo (SPX), the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comics, graphic novels, and alternative political cartoons, kicks off 2012 with our official announcement that cartoonists Dan Clowes and Chris Ware will be attending this year’s festival as special guests.

Superstar cartoonist Dan Clowes was awarded the 2011 PEN Center Literary Award for his “Outstanding body of work in graphic literature.” He received the Independent Spirit Award and an Academy Award nomination as writer for the movie Ghost World, based on his graphic novel, and he has published in the New Yorker, Time, Newsweek, and GQ. He was the first cartoonist selected for inclusion in Esquire’s prestigious fiction issue, and he drew the backgrounds for The Ramones’ video “I Don’t Want to Grow Up.” But for cartooning cognoscenti, he is perhaps best loved for Eightball, the ambitious and groundbreaking serialized anthology in which he premiered most of the stories eventually collected in his graphic novels. The most recent issue of Eightball contained the entire story “The Death Ray”, published in 2011 as a standalone graphic novel and selected by The Onion’s AV Club as one of “The Best 25 Comics of the ‘00s.”

Graphic novelist, gallery cartoonist, strip cartoonist – Chris Ware is one of the best known and most respected independent American cartoonists. He has guest edited McSweeney’s Quarterly and The Best American Comics and published cartoons in the New Yorker as well as the Virginia Quarterly Review. He was the first cartoonist to serialize a story in The New York Times Magazine, and has had his work included in the Whitney Biennial. His graphic novel Jimmy Corrigan – the Smartest Kid on Earth received the Guardian First Book Award, the American Book Award and the prestigious French comics award “L’Alph Art.” Fans are eagerly anticipating Volume 21 of his Acme Novelty Library comic strip series and his new compendium, Building Stories, will be released this Fall from Pantheon.

Floating World Comics is proud to publish Object 5, the first monograph of illustration and graphic design work by Swedish artist, Kilian Eng. The book features over 60 full color pieces created over the last three years. The book will debut at Floating World Comics on Thursday December 1st and at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest on December 3rd. The book is limited to 1000 copies worldwide. Ordering info will be available on the Floating World website shortly.

Kilian’s images present alternate worlds where the environment plays a great role. Many of these sequences present visual stories, without any text. This is connected to his growing interest in theatrical mise-en-scène and set design for film. He is fascinated with the details that can create these imaginative worlds; colors and lighting, dimensions and sounds. His inspiration comes from classic and futuristic architecture, surrealism, science fiction, as well as the different elements and shapes in natural and urban landscapes.

Alexa at Ladies Making Comics has a delightful report up on an event at Books of Wonder with Trina Robbins and Golden Age cartoonist Lily Renée, who is the subject of a new biographical comic written by Robbins. A nice reminder that “Women in Comics” didn’t start last month, last year, or even the last decade!

Lily soon arrived and everyone soon settled in to listen to Trina’s presentation, with Lily’s occasional comments, of her remarkable life. One of the first images to really strike me was a picture of an adolescent Lily with her mother, a friend of her mother’s, and that woman’s daughter. Lily explained that her mother’s friend—also Jewish—later managed to survive the concentration camps, because she was a doctor. One key tragic fact that almost always gets left out of Holocaust narratives is that Germanic Europe before the rise of the Nazis was one of the most socially progressive areas in the world at the time, with rampant women’s liberation and a thriving queer community.

As Trina went through the slides, sometimes Lily had a lot to say, but some, as with a picture of the wreckage following Kristallnacht, she had nothing to add. Though later, after talking about her time in England and going through the Blitz, she mentioned that she became very good at drawing ruins. She also talked about working as a maternity ward nurse in Leeds during that time, and the sense of purpose it gave her to protect the babies and bring them to the bomb shelter.

Davids 87, will be making several appearances in New York, according to a Fantagraphics press release:

One of America’s most beloved and best known cartoonists, Jack Davis, will make a series of extremely rare appearances in New York City and Brooklyn in early December, to promote his new art book, JACK DAVIS: DRAWING AMERICAN POP CULTURE (published by Fantagraphics Books). A living legend, these personal appearances will be a once-in-a-lifetime op- portunity to meet one of medium’s greatest practicioners.

On Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7PM, Davis will appear at New York’s renowned Strand Bookstore, in conversation with Fanta- graphics Books Publisher Gary Groth. The event will feature the world premiere of JACK DAVIS: DRAWING AMERICAN POP CULTURE.

On Friday, Dec. 2 at 6PM, Davis will be in attendance for an exhibition of his original art at the Scott Eder Gallery in Brooklyn.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, Davis will appear with Fantagraphics at the Brooklyn Comics & Graphics Festival, signing copies of JACK DAVIS: DRAWING AMERICAN POP CULTURE throughout the day and participating in a panel discussion with Gary Groth about his life and career (exact times t.b.a.).
Jack Davis arrived on the illustration scene in the euphoric post-war America of the late 1940s when consumer society was booming and the work force identified with commercial images that reflected this underlying sense of confidence and American bravado. Advertising agencies were looking for new ways to tap a rich and expanding market, and there was a vast array of media that needed illustrations. Davis’ animated and exuberant images possessed a sense of spontaneous energy that proved to have universal appeal in every medium he worked in.

Beginning with his masterful pen and ink cartooning at EC Comics, he quickly forged a reputation as one of the most versa- tile artists in comics, drawing humor, horror, and war stories. In Harvey Kurtzman’s MAD, especially, Davis made a mark as a master of caricature, composition, and wild, anarchic crowd scenes, practically vibrating with energy.

After stints at MAD, Trump, and Humbug — three humor magazines that defined the satirical zeitgeist of the ’50s — Davis went on to become the most successful commercial illustrator of his generation, illustrating movie posters, magazine articles, magazine fiction, LP jackets, and more.
JACK DAVIS: DRAWING AMERICAN POP CULTURE is a gigantic, unparalleled career- spanning retrospective, between whose hard covers resides the greatest collection — in terms of both quantity and quality — of Jack Davis’ work ever assembled!
The cutting-edge line-up of exhibitors, from solo self-publishers to progressive majors, and the all-star roster of artists participating in the on-stage Drawing Parade are unprecedented and admission is, once more, completely free. That’s part of Comica’s prime goal, to bring as many people as possible into contact with the wonders of the comics world. There really is a comic for everyone. More…

In the same venue, from 7pm, Warren Ellis, stellar comics scribe, makes a rare public appearance to be interviewed by none other than Lenny Henry, before the UK premiere screening of Patrick Meaney’s new full-length documentary movie about Ellis entitled Captured Ghosts. Tickets are selling fast at £8.80 including WeGotTickets 10% fee. More…

Monday November 14th brings another Comica Converstion, this time at Gosh! between American artist and animator Richard McGuire, famed for his 6-page Raw magazine masterpiece Here and for his terrifying, atmospheric chiller in the movie Fear(s) of the Dark. He’ll be talking with British surrealist cartoonist Steven Appleby and I’ll be hosting the evening. More…

Finally, for this Newsletter at least, I must alert you to another innovation at Comica this year, our first ever Club Night in the cool basement of The Book Club in Leonard Street, Shoreditch. Under the title ‘Night of the Living Comics’, we’re organising a thrill-packed soirée of music, drawing, projections, and more featuring such stars as Krent Able from The Stool Pigeon, Robert Sellers and JAKe, co-creator of the new graphic biography Hellraisers, Savage Pencil and Chris Long from reformed art-gang Battle of the Eyes, comedian and comics genius Steve Aylett who will introduce a screening on LINT: The Movie starring Robin Ince, Alan Moore, Stewart Lee and others. Numbers are limited, so book your tickets via the Comica site for only £5 each. More…

I’ll be sending you a further November Newsletter, a Part Two, detailing what’s coming up in the second half of this month very shortly. Meantime, I hope to see many of you at these and other Comica events, the London-wide fiesta of sequential art. Pinch yourself again, you’re not dreaming!
