Star Trek: The Next Generation Hive #1If you’re going to have a Star Trek: The Next Generation comic, there’s a very short list of people who would be more authoritative to write it than Brannon Braga.  Truthfully, the only other name that pops into my mind is Ronald D. Moore.  IDW has tapped Braga to write Star Trek: The Next Generation: Hive, which is being promoted as “the final chapter in The Borg saga.”

Braga, if you’re not familiar with the behind the camera world of Star Trek has been involved with a LOT of it.  He was co-producer on TNG, Executive Producer on Voyager and Enterprise.  He also wrote for those shows, plus worked on the Generations and First Contact movie scripts with the aforementioned Ronald D. Moore.  So yeah, he’s as much a Trek insider as anyone.  Your hardcore fans will probably wish Moore was on this, but Braga’s presence is a pretty big deal.

Braga’s teaming up with Terry Matalas for the script duties.  Matalas is another Trek alumni.  He was a Production Associate on Enterprise and also has a story credit on a couple episodes, so it’s not like Braga and Matalas are strangers to working together.  Joe Corroney.  Corroney’s done a LOT of covers for IDW’s licensed books.  He also did interiors for Spike Vs. Dracula.

Here’s the Official PR:

Make it so with IDW and Star Trek: The Next Generation!

Celebrated writer Brannon Braga makes his triumphant return!

San Diego, CA (June 15, 2012) – There’s no easy way to say it… the Borg are back. The cubes, the Queen, Locutus, and their intractable stance on resistance have reared their ugly heads once again to jeopardize the fate of our Galaxy. With all evil, though, must come good, and who better to thwart the Borg’s steely agenda than Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise?

For the show’s twenty-fifth anniversary, Hugo Award-winner Brannon Braga, one of The Next Generation’s key writers, is joining forces with fellow Trek scribe Terry Matalas and artist Joe Corroney to bring Captain Picard and the Enterprise’s crew back for a dynamic new journey.

“It’s a thrill and privilege to be writing in theStar Trek universe again,” said Braga. “This graphic medium will provide the narrative ambition and visual scope this story deserves — the final chapter in The Borg saga!”

In a distant future, where the deadly Borg have assimilated the entire Galaxy, Picard, his crew, and some unexpected allies must prove once and for all that resistance is notfutile! Packed with mind-bending twists, time-jumping action, and revered, genre-defining characters, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION: HIVE promises to be a must-read event for fans of the TNG’s intrepid legacy.

This September, tell your local comic shop to make it so!

  1. I’d like this more with a bigger Trek artist like Jerome Moore or Gordon Purcell drawing it. But I’m definitely interested in this!

  2. Course there’s also the fact that Braga is one of the most HATED men in the Trek fan base due to how he handled the franchise when he was put in charge.

  3. Of all the different publishers who’ve handles the Trek properties, this does look nice.

And where is Jerome Moore? He was my FAVORITE Trek cover artist. At one time he and Hank Kanalz were to do a LAW comic for Extreme, and then the two were to do a Masquerade comic for the Ultraverse, neither of which ever materialized. Now that Kanalz is such a mover and shaker these days…could someone please, at either DC or IDW, remember that Moore is worth way more then mere sporadic inking assignments?

  4. Brannon can always be counted on to come up with the glimmer of at least three really good ideas and quickly eff them up. I am so incredibly over him and his hackery.

  5. I loved Star Trek with every ounce of my geeky little heart.

But I got So. Friggin’. Tired. Of certain concepts, and Borg were at the top, along with Klingon stories and time travel. Despite touting strange new worlds, actually encountering new concepts sure didn’t seem to happen often enough.

If they promise that this is indeed the Very Last Time, then I promise to give it a flip and consider it.

  6. The expanded universe novels aready dealt with the Borg for the final time so I am not sure how IDW’s will fit with the Paramount cannon.
The fall-out of the series is the premise for the Typhon Pact books currently being published.

  7. More authorative than Brannon Braga? Try ummm…every actual decent writer out there who actually has an UNDERSTANDING of: plot, character development, oh and since it’s sci-fi, SCIENCE. But other than that, he’ll be great, because he kept the franchise, fresh, inovative and new and…ummm..oh….
