Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer universe continues to grow. The current miniseries, The Quantum Age, has explored the far future for the heroes of Spiral City, and next March Lemire will look in the opposite direction.

Dark Horse has announced Black Hammer ’45, a new four-issue miniseries co-written by Lemire and Ray Fawkes, and illustrated by Matt and Sharlene Kindt. The series, as the title indicates, is set in 1945, and follows a team of African-American pilots called the Black Hammer Squadron during World War II. Expect plenty of homages to the war comics of Joe Kubert and Irv Novick.

Black Hammer ’45 marks the first time that a writer other than Lemire is involved in the overall Black Hammer universe. Lemire and Fawkes have previously collaborated on, among other things, Constantine and Justice League Dark for DC. Lemire and Matt Kindt have also worked together previously, with Kindt drawing a handful of issues of Lemire’s Sweet Tooth series. Both Fawkes and Kindt also provided art for Lemire-penned stories in the Black Hammer Giant-Sized Annual.

The overall Black Hammer universe was recently optioned for development in film and television by Legendary Entertainment, with Lemire set to write the pilot for a Black Hammer TV series.
