If you find yourself needing a break from the chaos that is SDCC, take note that there is plenty of on and offsite activity that will allow you some breathing room as well as satisfying your comic/art desires. As usual with Comic Con, there have been some notably great art exhibits announced for next week and definitely are worth checking out.

The Art of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie (July 11-15 at the Disney Booth)

“The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition” captures the magic of the filmmaking process and gives audiences an exclusive glimpse into the stop-motion animation process brought to life by visionary filmmaker Tim Burton. From original sketches drawn by Burton, to extensive props, sets and puppets, the exhibition showcases the artistic detail and vision that has gone into bringing this heartwarming tale to the big screen in 2012’s most highly anticipated animated movie. “The Art of Frankenweenie Exhibition” delves into the world of a boy who, inspired by science and the love of his dog, brings his beloved pet back from the dead.

Unmasked: Comic Art in San Diego (July 7-31 at Art Lab SD)

The Adventure Time: Keyper Seeker Experience (July 11-15 at The New Children’s Museum of San Diego)

This year’s SDCC is really all about Adventure Time! With this exhibit as well as the scavenger hunt, it’s going to be a week full of Finn and Jake delight!

It’s a Finn and Jake take over, Comic-Con style! The New Children’s Museum will be re-conceptualized to feature an exclusive, fully immersive Adventure Time experience. Inspired by two fan-favorite episodes, the Adventure Time: Keyper Seeker experience will welcome guests into this lush re-creation of the Land of Ooo! The Keyper, a beloved Adventure Time character who just happens to wear a key shaped hat, will present guests with a special key that opens one of the many doors within the secret lair of the Door Lords. Before a door will open, each guest must decipher a riddle that if successful will grant access to an extra-special prize locked inside!

Cartoon Networks 20th Anniversary Exhibition (July 11-14 at JETT Gallery)

Curated by Mark Murphy, 75 artists were each given a Cartoon Network show as inspiration and were asked to create an original piece. Expect to see such memorable shows like Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Dexter’s Laboratory, and many more to be recreated and re-imagined like never before!

  1. Oh, duh. I didn’t see the “Disney booth” part. I was looking for a gallery address since I glommed on to the phrase “offsite event”.
    Thanks Jessica!
