17 Comments POSTED ON Dec 27 2011 AT 2:00 pm BY The Beat

Via their Facebook page, the upcoming Spider-Man reboot movie posted some stills. Surely Jim Carrey is very excited now over this still of Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, as well as Captain Stacy and Peter Parker in action. Is it just us or has this Spidey reboot hype kind of gotten lost in the Batman/Avengers shuffle?

Share this link on Facebook!Tweet“I think a solid core of high-selling mainstream-y genre comics would be nice, but it really hasn’t happened (except for arguably the manga phenomenon, and I don’t get the impression that the success of manga has bled back into non-manga comics) and “art comics” have achieved enough big successes now (Persepolis [...]

ADVENTURE TIME comic lands at KaBoom!

3 Comments POSTED ON Dec 27 2011 AT 11:31 am BY The Beat

Given that creator Pendleton Ward is a huge comics reader and sometime cartoonist and that half the staff consists of folks you would normally see at Stumptown, AND that the cartoon itself is heavily influenced by generations of alt.comix (Ward says Trondheim's Dungeon comics are a huge influence) ....it's a surprise that up until now there hasn't been an ADVENTURE TIME comic book based on the hugely popular Cartoon Network show. But now BOOM!! is remedying that with a new ongoing monthly series written by Ryan North (DINOSAUR COMICS) with art by Shelli Paroline (ICE AGE: ICED IN and MUPPET SNOW WHITE.) It's part of Boom's KaBOOM! kid line. Also of note: the book is coming out from BOOM! rather than DC, which, like the Cartoon Network, is owned by Warner Bros.

Your guide to the upcoming nerd TV show boom

9 Comments POSTED ON Dec 27 2011 AT 9:30 am BY The Beat

With the growing ascendancy and popularity of the "nerd" archetype, especially as exemplified by the hugely popular THE BIG BANG THEORY, a bunch of television programs exploring and/or exploiting this personality type are on the drawing board. Some of them might be fun, but some of them are probably going to make nerd blood boil and dominate late night discussions at SF conventions for months to come. Herewith, a field guide.

For sale: LA’s iconic Golden Apple comic shop

5 Comments POSTED ON Dec 27 2011 AT 9:00 am BY The Beat

If you have $679,000.00 sitting around, you can buy Los Angeles's The Golden Apple, one of America's best known and longest running comics specialty stores. It's for sale on eBay right this minute. The sale price includes $300,000 in inventory in comics, games, toys and so on. You can make an offer. Founded back in 1979 by Bill Liebowitz, one of the leading retailers in the rise of the direct market of the '80s, The Golden Apple was a forward-facing store with a wide range of merchandise and a steady stream of events and signings - some of them historic. LA celebrity comics readers were regular customers over the years, and the store was frequently used as a film location when a comics shop was called for.

NEXUS is back in DHP this May

7 Comments POSTED ON Dec 27 2011 AT 8:15 am BY The Beat

In an emailed newsletter, artist Steve Rude reports that his rough year is ending on an up note, and he'll be re-teaming with writer Mike Baron for a new Nexus story starting in DARK HORSE PRESENTS #12 in May. The three installments of the story will then be collected into a standalone 30-page book. The story deals with the "nature of evil". Nexus, the spacefaring tale of a superhero who kills mass-murderers -- has had a long run with multiple publishers since the early '80s. Baron and Rude self-published an issue a few years ago but the series has been hit with delays since then.

“Tintin” ventures far into the uncanny valley

35 Comments POSTED ON Dec 26 2011 AT 4:04 pm BY The Beat

Hey America! You've been given what you always wanted -- a TINTIN movie directed by Steven Spielberg! Right? But despite the years of clamor for this entertainment -- and the enthusiastic bowler-hatted selling by Spielberg and co-producer Peter Jackson -- THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN has been a bit of an underperformer at the crowded Chrsitmas box office, coming in at #5 for the long weekend with a 4-day weekend take of $14.3 million and a cumulative of $22.3 million. This has not been a huge worry to Paramount and Sony, however, because worldwide, it's already made $240 million.

Holiday reading: The War on Christmas! by Handy and Goldman

0 Comments POSTED ON Dec 26 2011 AT 3:00 pm BY The Beat

Bruce Handy and Dan Goldman give us the lowdown on the ongoing War on Christmas via a webcomic at Vanity Fair. -- A war on Christmas? A harrowing and real thing, if you ask the values police. So we sent leathery war correspondent Bruce Handy and grizzled war cartoonist Dan Goldman to record the frontline combat for posterity, in the manner of their Civil War–era Harper’s forebears. Where we lay our scene: a suburban mall, its Santa’s village defended from invaders by his little helpers. (What follows may contain graphic elf violence.)

The Freelance Life: Making it in webcomics in Romania

1 Comment POSTED ON Dec 26 2011 AT 12:00 pm BY The Beat

The Romanian webcomic Fredo and Pid'jin, has been a big success for its creators Eugen Erhan and Tudor Muscalu, this piece at Next Web tells us, if by success you mean lots of links on Reddit and Digg. What emerges is the story of two guy with a dream and a webcomic about two evil pigeons out to conquer the world. Things looked low, but then a guy who works on the Simpsons came and told them they were on the right track, energizing them to carry on. But...questions remain:

The Freelance Life: What Cee Lo can teach cartoonists

2 Comments POSTED ON Dec 26 2011 AT 10:00 am BY The Beat

Since everyone is always comparing the comics business to the music business in terms of retail erosion, howabout looking at a music success story? The New York Times has a profile of musician Cee Lo Green explaining how, despite the economic decimation in the music industry, he's been able to make some $20 million this year by rigorously branding himself and expanding his activities to including numerous TV hosting gigs, merchandising and Vegas. Along the way some interesting iTunes numbers are dropped. Although "F&^% You," Cee Lo's anthemic yet catchy song of moving on was downloaded some 5.3 million times in the US, that doesn't mean he made $5 million from it.

Holiday viewing: The Star Wars Holiday Special

4 Comments POSTED ON Dec 25 2011 AT 10:00 pm BY The Beat

Nothing tops off a holiday like a nice slice of cheese. The Star Wars Holiday Special, in case you missed the briefing, aired for the first and only legitimate time on November 17, 1978. It was the very first filmed Star Wars spin-off and introduced to the Star Wars mythos Boba Fett, the planet of the Wookies, and Life Day. It also introduced to the Star Wars universe characters played by Art Carney, Harvey Korman and Beatrice Arthur -- all sitcom stars of the era. In case you haven't figured it out, it was a mystically horrific comedy/musical that was, if not the worst thing ever associated with Star Wars, then at least the most ludicrously inappropriate.
