Did you know you cannot subscribe to all 52 of the New 52? Only 33 of the titles show up on DC's online subscription form. Does this mean the other 19 are doomed? Or not expected to make it? Probably not. AFAIK, DC has never made ALL of its titles available via subscription. The big guns -- the Bats and the Supes and the GLs -- are always on it. The most kid-friendly ones are almost always on the list, as parents, aunties and peepaws like to give Little Johnny magazine subs as a gift instead of the vial of crank which he actually wants. One poster on the Comic Geek Speak Forum did find a...pattern in the list, however:

Satrapi's PERSEPOLIS remains one of the all time best selling graphic novels -- in recent years she's concentrated on directing, as opposed to cartooning, with a live action version of her book CHICKEN WITH PLUMS currently prepping for release. THE SIGH was originally published in French as LE SOUPIR in 2004.

So second printing ahoy, both with variant covers by Kaare Andrews.

A little googling around shows that there is actually a subculture of fans of very heavy versions of DC superheroines. There are subcultures that like all kinds of versions of the DC superheroines, but let's not go there because it gets real icky real fast. Anyway. Let's even the scales!
Continue ReadingThey may not be quite as hot as Missoni knit miniskirts, but the New 52 comics have been experiencing a lively afterlife on eBay due to various shortages. However what will happen to the market when an "official" error printing gets out there? DC just announced they will replace some copies of GREEN LANTERN #1 which have a printing error -- a big green circle over Sinestro's ear.
Continue ReadingIt's getting so you can't launch a secret cabal without a good press release. Besides ReedPOP, parent company of NYCC, White Space is backed by the television market show MIPTV, also owned by Reed. Also involved, pop culture sites GeekChicDaily and Nerdist, which will help put together the programming.
Continue ReadingWell, it's been an exciting week for comics, what with you know what, and you know who. But one of the most buzzed comics of the week was PIGS #1, written by Nathan Cosby and our own Ben McCool, with art by Breno Tamura. This new Image book -- about a second generation Cuban sleeper cell on a complex mission to overthrow the US Government -- has already shown off a variety of covers by artists from Jock to Dave Gibbons, but Cosby and McCool have just announced a special variant cover debuting at New York Comic-Con by...Katie Cook. Best known for her charming illustrations, let's just say it goes against type in a very cool way.
Continue ReadingICv2's sales numbers are out for August, and Although JUSTICE LEAGUE #1 doesn't top 200K on the chart, as explained before, this is because the number doesn't include reorders (the book was released on the last day of August) or overseas sales. But JL #1's 176,00 copies was still way more than FLASHPOINT #5's 94K and FEAR ITSELF #3's 90,000 -- below the top, August was a bit anemic. If you're looking for the reason things needed a shake-up, here you go.

Continue ReadingAll of the most important people are being quoted on the actual impact of the sales success of the New 52. DC's much advertised and marketed initiative has been credited with bringing a herd of new and lapsed readers into comics stores, and so far it does NOT seem to be at the expense of other publishers. Let's take a look shall we?
