Continue ReadingEarlier this year, word got out that Dynamite would be producing new Voltron comics, tying in with an upcoming cartoon, and now a few more details have been released. Alex Ross will be involved, which shouldn't be too much of a surprise, since he's involved with a lot of Dynamite books. Other than that...well, it will feature a giant robot named Voltron, having immense science fiction adventures. Do you really need more to go on?
Continue ReadingThere are so many comics that linger in the dark corners of history -- comics that were supposed to come out that never will be or may yet still appear. One such book is GALACTIC GIRL GUIDES, a miniseries spin-off of STARSTRUCK written by Elaine Lee with art by Linda Medley, that was supposed to come out from Tundra but was lost in that company's acquisition by Kitchen Sink and horrifically messy denouement. STARSTRUCK itself is back, in a new edition from IDW. And Medley's art for the mini has resurfaced as an eBay auction. After nearly 20 years, Medley has decided to sell the art, the Flog blog explains:
Continue ReadingAfter looking at a lot of uninspired comics art everywhere, we needed to cleanse our palate and seek out some things which are pleasing to the eye. Like Sam Bosma, an incredibly talented illustrator whose stunning work you can see at his blog. We could spend hours reveling in Bosma's sharp angles and lush colors, but for now we'll link to his illustrations for The Hobbit.
Continue ReadingWith all the hubbub going on about the New 52, it's ironic that this week also sees the release of a graphic novel that readers have been waiting for for over 25 years: New Teen Titans: Games Marv Wolfman and George Perez revolutionized DC's superhero line with their work on Teen Titans 30 years ago, and they were tapped to create an original graphic novel about the Titans -- one of the first such projects at DC. Unfortunately, first came writer's block on Wolfman's part, then artist's block on Perez's, then various illnesses and publishing scheduling changes came and...bam! 25 years have passed. Perez drew the first 60 pages of the book pack in the 80s, and it languished in a drawer for all this time, until over the last few years, he was able to get back to work on it. However, eye surgery last year caused one last delay...until this very day.

Arvid Nelson and Robert Castro will be the regular creative team. Variant covers are provided by Alex Ross, Lucio Parillo, Ryan Sook, and Paul Renaud. The first few Tarzan novels, first published in 1914, are now public domain; the name Tarzan is trademarked by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., however.

It turns out that because NYCC is four days this year -- preview night on Thursday and three full days afterwards -- a slot just couldn't be found for the conference. A statement has just been released:

Continue ReadingNew York Comic-Con has just posted its programming schedules, and there are 300 panels in various categories from anime to comics to video games to Kevin Smith. Unfortunately it's been posted online in one of those awful B-2-B agenda type formats. We made a screen cap of the comics programming grid here: From the looks of things, it's a fairly publisher-centric lineup of Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, etc. Expect a LOT of news. As promised: here's the EXCLUSIVE text file of all the programming.

Continue ReadingIn December, Howard Chaykin, artist on such books as American Flagg!, The Shadow, Batman, New Avengers, Dominic Fortune, Black Kiss gets an art retrospective from Dynamite. Written by Robert Greenberger, the book includes a foreword by Brian Michael Bendis and an afterword by Walt Simonson, as well as never before seen pieces from Chaykin's archives. Given Chaykin's penchant for wit and candor, one imagines this will be a pretty entertaining book.
