Today’s digital comics bestsellers — UPDATED

What's selling at the various comics apps -- both standalone and publisher-centric? It's easy to find out. METHODOLOGY: These charts are from the iTunes app store; every app has a "Top In App Purchases" list which is where I got these from. I don't know how they're compiled, but I'd guess live updating, so these really show only best sellers at THAT MOMENT. However, I do check these fairly regularly, and they are pretty stable, even if a sudden spike would be missed by random checks.

Preview: THE BIG LIE #1

38 Comments POSTED ON Sep 07 2011 AT 12:53 pm BY The Beat

While the re-you-know-what by you-know-who has been sucking all the air and dollars out of the room, there are lots of other great comics on sale from other publishers this month, and it's high time to get back to previewing them. One such book is THE BIG LIE #1 by Rick Veitch and Gary Ersksine, a highly provocative book about a woman who goes back in time to rescue her husband from the destruction of the World Trade Center. Along the way she uncovers some startling questions. Creator Veitch says he's not a Truther -- as are those who believe the 9/11 attacks were a government conspiracy -- but as in this Huffington Post interview he believes in skepticism:

After a spectacular debut graphic novel in 2005, Night Fisher, cartoonist R. Kikuo Johnson has kinda kept a low profile, at least on the comics front, while staying very busy with illustration work. But he just launched a new website that includes news of a new children's book, The Shark King, which will be published next year by Toon Books. Preview here.

Brooklyn Book Festival announces comics programming

2 Comments POSTED ON Sep 07 2011 AT 12:13 pm BY The Beat

The Brooklyn Book Festival is New York's biggest public book event of the year, and it's always had some comics programming -- however this year's edition, which takes place Sunday, September 18th at Brooklyn Borough Hall, is blowing off the hinges with appearances by Kate Beaton, Dean Haspiel, Michael Kupperman, Keith Knight, Ted Rall, David Shrigley, Sarah Glidden, Raina Telgemeier, Jennifer Hayden, GB Tran, Dave Roman, Laura Lee Gulledge, Nick Bertozzi, Hillary Chute, and Steven Weinberg. Instead of being confined to only comics events, graphic novelists are taking part in panels with non-comics writers. I'm moderating the humor panel with Kate Beaton, Michael Kupperman, Keith Knight, and Jennifer Hayden -- oh boy!

Diesel drops some info on Riddick 3

5 Comments POSTED ON Sep 07 2011 AT 10:00 am BY The Beat

Vin Diesel has taken to Facebook (irony alert) to offer some morsels and concept art on a third outing for Riddick, his SF saga character. Although a lot of people liked the first action flick PITCH BLACK, an equal number disliked the trippy sequel, THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK, which introduced air fairies, revolutions, bounty hunters, Lady Macbeth, Necromongers, and all sorts of other weird shit. Although considered an underperformer when it opened, it's gained a cult following on the internet -- and at Stately Beat Manor -- via two successful video games, and a new edition would be much welcomed here.

I never got around to writing a big meta post about this year's San Diego, but one of the things I would have written about is the increasing frenzy over celebrity spotting. I was reminded of this by a content farm post I cane across entitled The best place to meet celebs at San Diego Comic-Con:
