3 Comments POSTED ON Aug 12 2011 AT 7:05 am BY The Beat

This is from the Enquirer so salt and all that, but apparently Maddox Pitt-Jolie, adapted son of Angelina and Brad Pitt, is dying to be an action star, so they are grooming him to play the lead in the movie adaptation of Paul Pope's upcoming BATTLING BOY comic -- which PItt's production company has optioned.

§ A fellow whose girlfriend was interning at Disney two years ago and knew about the Marvel acquisition has been charged with insider trading after he took advantage of his knowledge to buy stocks just before the acquisition was announced -- this kind of thing is illegal unless you use the popular "time travel" method of going back in time to remind yourself to invest in Widget stock or whatever. Toby Scammell, 26, may have just snooped into his GF's Blackberry -- or maybe he just knew. Either way he made a 3000% return on his $5,465 investment.

Ren & Stimpy is 20, and so are Doug and Rugrats!

3 Comments POSTED ON Aug 12 2011 AT 3:51 am BY The Beat

We missed the actual anniversary, but Cartoon Brew noted that 20 years ago yesterday -- August 11, 1991 marked the debut of the Nicktoons programming block, including Ren & Stimpy, perhaps the most influential cartoon of the last quarter century. Early episodes featured John K's eccentric genius unleashed and ushered in an age of more personal, biting animation -- and for a little while Happy Happy Joy Joy, Muddy Mudskipper and Log were household names, as hipsters called one another "you eediot!" and were urged not to qhiz on the electric fence. We wanted to embed this clip from "Ren's Toothache," the most horrible cartoon ever made, but a still will have to do.

Via this morning's teaser it turned out that November FF tease from Marvel was actually FF #600! Color me shocked! The lineup has been given as: However, Hickman earlier tweeted: Heads up: For various reasons, one name has been left off the teasers for FF600. @mingdoyle is also going to be joining us. #stoked! Doyle's name was on a recalled teaser image earlier, as we noted. Good to hear she's actually on board the book. But is that Human Torch flying merrily on the cover a ghostly echo of a departed friend? Or...is he still alive? Worra worra worra

Womanthology: $100k may go to help start a new comics imprint — UPDATED

29 Comments POSTED ON Aug 11 2011 AT 12:47 pm BY The Beat

Anytime someone comes into a big sum of money, people will start asking what they're going to do with it, whether it's go to Disneyland or start a publishing company. So when WOMANTHOLOGY, the all-woman anthology started by artist Renae De Liz raised an unprecedented $109,000 on Kickstarter -- the biggest comics project ever and the 25th biggest project ever--it was inevitable that people would be asking a lot of questions. Especially since, as I learned myself, the contributors would not be paid. However, De Liz seems to have already answered most of the questions that have been raised.

18 Comments POSTED ON Aug 10 2011 AT 5:48 pm BY The Beat

Marvel sent out another one of their teasers earlier today which got people talking a little. While the news that Greg Pak and Mike McKone were taking over writing and drawing duties of ASTONISHING X-MEN with #44 in November was notable enough, the idea that Scott and Ororo -- who are in pretty tight relationships with others at this time -- might be locking lips is positively TMZ territory! Pak explained:

9 Comments POSTED ON Aug 10 2011 AT 4:08 pm BY The Beat

As many have noted, Frances Bean Cobain, long the innocent ping pong ball in a custody battle with her stability challenged mother, Courtney Love, and other family members, will be 18 in a few days. And to celebrate, she's been photographed by fashion designer Hedi Slimane, best known for his ultra-slim cut suits. Along the way Cobain shows off a tattoo based on a character by cartoonist Al Columbia (Pim and Francie) -- which should come as no surprise, since Cobain's art alter ego Fiddle Tim lists Columbia as an influence. These pictures from Slimane have gotten wide play and they are beautiful. If you scroll down the page you see his previous subject was Amy Winehouse. Given Cobain's genetic influences, (and her swift evolution from
