A couple of examples were being tweeted about heavily this week. Cartoonist Dan Archer has been experimenting with interactive non-fiction comics for a while. What is Comics Journalism? by Dan Archer, a survey of non-fiction comics from Thomas Nast on. It's a nice looking piece but comes with bells and whistles:

Continue ReadingYeah like the rest of you East Coasters, we just had a little wee temblor. My mind refused to believe it was happening, preferring to think that it was a big truck driving by or the Second Avenue Subway rattling by...except that doesn't exist just yet. Having been in the Northridge quake, I knew it wasn't serious...yet, but the idea of the piles of books in Stately Beat Manor tumbling down filled my heart with dread. But the cat didn't even wake up. Hope the folks closer to the epicenter are okay. Virginian Colleen Doran tweeted:

Continue ReadingAnd to think I almost didn't go to the Baltimore Comic-Con. Like many I was feeling pretty conned out, but in the end the idea of a short road trip to an always relaxing show -- and covering the Harveys -- won out, so I was off on a road trip with Ed Catto of Bonfire Agency and Captain Action fame, and Josh Frankel, founder of new publisher Zip Comics. Beginning as it did at 7:30 am, the trip down was a coffee-driven affair, as we discussed our various endeavors and ideas for improvements and prognostications for the future. While all three of us are born optimists, the current uncertainties and question marks left any real attempts at planning akin to spitting into the wind. Future cloudy; ask again later.

Continue ReadingWell not really a fight, more of a strafing run, since it's unlikly Chris Ware will ever be asked about Grant Morrison in an interview. While on his voluble book publicity tour, Scottish superstar Grant Morrison continues to drop quotable bombs to be picked up by websites worldwide. Today the battlefield is Rolling Stone, where he comes clean on Chris Ware; the Acme Novelty Library genius, known for his grim vivisection of human futility, is not Morrison's cuppa Earl Grey tea.

A mystery Pixar film was shown to be “The Untitled Pixar film about Dinosaurs" and “The Untitled Pixar Movie that Takes You Inside the Mind.” Well, fair enough. The only Marvel movie touched on was THE AVENGERS -- Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Chris Hemsworth all showed up to wave to the crowd — however, and a no cell phones policy meant that no pictures or leaked footage got out.
Continue ReadingVia a private mailing list sent to comics professionals, Atomic Comics owner Mike Malve has made a statement on the abrupt closing of his four-store Atomic Comics chain in Phoenix, AZ. He confirmed that he would be filing for bankruptcy. Malve blamed the economy in general for the closings, but cited a specific incident as the beginning of the problems: in October 2006, the Mesa Superstore had to be closed for five months after a car crashed through the front window, taking out a water main and causing such severe damage that they lost a million dollars in inventory. After the reopening, many former regular customers did not return, Malve noted. This began the downward spiral of declining sales which the last two years of recession had worsened.

It was then that Phil Foglio began to serialize Girl Genius online and sell print collections, and pronounced it a success, a claim that Butcher analyzed:

The four store chain, owned by Mike Malve, was one of Diamond's biggest accounts and a huge, progressive retailer known nationwide for its signings and aggressive, innovative promotions. Atomic and its logo were included prominently in the KICK-ASS movie, after Mark Millar became a fan following a signing. The four stores were located in Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, and Paradise Valley.
