Marvel just sent out another one of its mystery teaser campaigns, with the above graphic and the tag "Coming in November 2011." Of late the FF has of course been renamed and renumbered Fantastic Force, in the wake of Johnny Storm's death. However, there had been some speculation that Marvel wouldn't pass up the opportunity to publish FANTASTIC FOUR #600 in what would have been the original numbering. Since two issues are shipping in October, the timing is right. Or it could be the return of Johnny, aka the Human Torch.

But it also contains an explanation of what has vexed many of late: Marvel's spoilerific PR in major media. For instance the story of the new dark-skinned Spider-Man broke on Tuesday inUSA Today, spoiling the story with its ubiquity before the issue in question came out. However, says Quesada, there really isn't any other way to do it:

The original goal was $25,000. Womanthology had some fantastic premiums to get people to pledge -- including contributions from Kevin Smith, Neil Gaiman, Jim Lee, and tons more. But thats still a crazy amount of money. Over 2000 people pledged, 433 of them between $65 and $100.

The Stumptown dates were announced months ago, so the change comes as a surprise. As one exhibitor who forwarded the letter told us, in previous years MoCCA and Stumptown were a week apart, which was hard enough, but now the already small pool of indie comics publishers and creators are going to have to skip one or the other.

There's also this Barks Treasury Gold Limited Edition with Signed Certificate #320/1000 (Applewood Books, 1997) made out to "Steve."

And as many have said before him, working with recent brands of editorial direction tended to mitigate against spontaneity:

Sales were down from 2010 and down sharply from June -- however, June was a five week month, and July only four. The overall market is down about 7% in both units and dollars for the year. IDW was the #3 publisher in dollars, while Image was #3 in units; DC has closed the gap against Marvel quite a bit from the dismal May that is what many say unleashed the relaunch plans. Tables, charts and more info below.

The results of the poll have been unveiled this week. Over 200 replies were received, so it's a pretty representative sampling. The #1 was revealed this morning and it's not a big shocker -- neither are any of the other Top 10:

Perhaps we'll update this post if more good ones come in. • As you can see Stephen Colbert weighed in last night with some funny, funny jokes. Colbert is an avowed comics fan with many crossovers in his resume already, including having Joe Quesada on as a guest, and guesting himself in an issue of Spider-man.
Continue ReadingSteam Crow is a publishers/novelty/poster/art company we've noticed at shows before because of their great display and attractive merchandise. They are not an outright comics publisher, as they concentrate on buttons, prints, art and so on but they do publish some books. Their style is distinctive -- a cute/horror/steampunk kind of mashup . They's just posted selling tips from San Diego that EVERYONE SHOULD READ, as it contains solid advice about making sales at the show -- despite being across the aisle from a giant movie booth. Although their product line makes this a bit different from a comic-only booth, the reality is that selling ancillary merchandise is a major revenue stream for most comics publishers these days, small and large, and these observations are valuable for just about everyone. A sample:
