201106071632 DC Comics Month to Month Sales: April 2011
by Marc-Oliver Frisch

DC’s average comic-book sales continued to recover in April, for the third consecutive month, from January’s all-time low. The publishing events “War of the Green Lanterns” and Action Comics #900 contributed their share to the good news, as did the absence of several low-selling cross-media adaptations inherited from the now defunct WildStorm imprint. More significantly, though, DC titles across the board continued their recent stabilization.

Why are sales stabilizing? Well, let’s speculate. Throughout 2010, the average cover price of a new DC comic book was $ 3.38, and there were an average 83 new DC comic books on sale per month. In the first four months of 2011, on the other hand, the average DC comic book cost $ 3.14, while the average number of titles per month was 71. That’s not enough data to draw any sound conclusions, but it doesn’t contradict the idea that retailers may be breathing a sigh of relief in the face of lower prices and volume, at least, and may be spending those extra 24 cents on a smaller number of titles as a result.

Of course, all that could be moot in a few months, once the big, sweeping DC Universe relaunch comes around. But the other good news is, there were 54 new releases under the DC Universe imprint in April, with an average cover price of $ 3.23. So if those are replaced with 52 titles mostly priced at $ 2.99, then that should be a workable enough load for the market, in terms of sheer volume, if there’s any truth to the above theory.

See below for the details, and please consider the small print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

8 - BATMAN, INC.
11/2010: Batman, Inc. #1 -- 95,587
12/2010: Batman, Inc. #2 -- 71,544 (-25.2%) [72,957]

03/2011: Batman, Inc. #3 -- 66,772 (- 6.7%)
03/2011: Batman, Inc. #4 -- 65,315 (- 2.2%)
04/2011: Batman, Inc. #5 -- 62,204 (- 4.8%)

As I’m writing this, it’s not clear yet what’s going to happen with the Batman books. Given that the whole line has been plagued by massive delays and last-minute creative-team changes lately, there’ll probably be some shuffling, at least.

As far as Batman, Inc. is concerned, the latest act of Grant Morrison’s big Batman opera hasn’t been setting the charts on fire, exactly, so who knows if it will stick around.

Action Comics is the second U.S. comic-book title to hit issue #900, right after Marvel’s Deadpool.

Which almost doubles sales. The two 1:5 variant-cover editions probably also helped.

The numbers are holding steady, no doubt thanks to the build-up to the big “Flashpoint” crossover. Superstar writer Geoff Johns will be off the book after the September relaunch, so it’s not likely to be a great favor to The Flash commercially.

Rock-solid numbers, thanks to “War of the Green Lanterns.” Emerald Warriors will effectively be relaunched as Green Lantern: The New Guardians in September, with the creative team currently working on Green Lantern Corps.

The boost from the anniversary issue largely evaporates, as usual. Of course, everything that’s going to happen here in the next four months is very, very moot, because the creative team for August’s Justice League #1 is Geoff Johns and Jim Lee. Combined with DC’s big-gun characters, a new issue #1 and its flagship-title status within the DC Universe, that’s as big as it gets right now.

So, basically, we’re about to see The Direct Market’s Best Shot, 2011 edition. Stock up on popcorn.

The sixth consecutive issue with a small sales increase. Alas, there’s this big relaunch coming up that has DC Comics bunkers across the world in a huff.

So the smart thing to do here would be to keep these exact same creators on this exact same title in September, at the very least, and do everything else you can to ensure that the relaunch will build on the book’s momentum, rather than to kill it.

The two-year comparison is with a special issue written by Neil Gaiman, by the way, so it’s not nearly as bad as it looks.

In one of his recent interviews on the DC Universe relaunch, co-publisher Dan DiDio mentioned westerns, so Jonah Hex may survive the relaunch in some form.

And looking at the sales of the last couple of years, it would make sense to keep the creative team, too. The book hasn’t been setting the charts on fire, certainly, but it’s become one of DC’s most consistent performers. That’s something you can try to build on.

Disclaimers, et cetera

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in parenthesis behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]“). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles released under the Johnny DC imprint and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

For a more lyrical approach to discussing sales figures that covers all the essentials in a more condensed, less tedious fashion, finally, go right here.

  1. Nick Marino says:

hehehe “Action Comics is the second U.S. comic-book title to hit issue #900, right after Marvel’s Deadpool.” good one.

  2. Drew Hart says:

Looks like I’ll be one of the few (apparently given the numbers) that will mourn T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents if it’s cancelled. This has been a great book so far.

  3. Nathan Aaron says:

I don’t get Xombi? Man, such a great book. So as usual, horrible sales follow. But I know tons of comic shops did lots of re-ordering on the first issue at least, so why are they not showing up on these numbers? I was really looking forward to seeing the boost in numbers from re-orders, but with issue 2 being what it is, and DC having already announced their supernatural line, looks like Xombi is a goner, once more.

  4. Torsten Adair says:

Actually, Four Color Comics hit 1000+ issues way back in 1962…

  5. Corey P. says:

I love Thunder Agents, still hoping to see it as part of DCNU!
Also, I’m super happy to see Snyder writing the new Batman book, as Detective is really well written right now.

  6. Louis Lane says:

Looks like all of the super-hero titles below SUPERGIRL (21,598) have been purged in conjunction with the relaunched DCU.

  7. saipaman says:

Jonah Hex had better return and without any pointless changes.

  8. Naveed says:

Good to see many of DC titles stabilizing this month, hopefully this will giv them momentum with their relaunch of the DCU. Hope they dont screw it up like they so often do. (Powergirl folks, it is awesome book)

  9. KillJoy says:

I love Grant Morrison, and I could follow Final Crisis and the Batman and Robin book. I mean what was going on it.

But I could not piece together that second arc of Batman Inc. Even with the annotations from that David U. fellow. Seriously that thing was freaking obtuse.

Not surprised sales are slowing down or dropping on that. Needs a slightly stronger editorial hand, not someone blinded by Morrison’s genius. I mean he is a genius, but he’s like.. too smart sometimes you know? His brain works on a different wavelength not suited to monthly formatting.

  10. Ruwan says:

Heidi dropped knowledge on me. KABOOM!

  11. Brian Hibbs says:

    “01/2011: SD:WAY? #5 — 4,540 (- 5.5%)
    02/2011: SD:WAY? #6 — 4,456 (- 1.9%)
    03/2011: SD:WAY? #7 — 4,522 (+ 1.5%)
    04/2011: SD:WAY? #8 — 4,599 (+ 1.7%)”

    “A Johnny DC title.”

Really? That’s the best you have for “the Walking Dead of DC”? :)

  12. Nathan Aaron says:

I used to love Grant Morrison, but his stuff has gotten SO confusing, I don’t waste my time much anymore. Final Crisis, Batman, Inc., lost, lost, lost. If I have to read six obscure Batman issues from 1968, along with three blogs presenting annotations for the current issue, to me that means you’re not actually doing your job as a good writer (but I might be in the minority on that opinion.)

  13. Shawn Hill says:

What’s so hard to understand about Batman, Inc.? Bruce is running around recruiting Int’l Batmen, and this dude Leviathan is trying to oppose him, often by exploiting children. The rest are all just easter eggs, open at will.

  14. Chris Hero says:

What is this comment thread? What happened to all the, “Marc – Why do you say mean things about Batman? You must hate kittens and ice cream, too!”

  15. “You must hate kittens and ice cream, too!”

Dude, kittens & ice cream is my favorite. The really small ones go best with strawberry, I’ve always found.

  16. Eric H. says:

Saipman, I heard that Hex is the same, except he has horse mounted gatling guns and pukes crows every once in a while.

  17. Scratchie says:

“Action Comics is the second U.S. comic-book title to hit issue #900, right after Marvel’s Deadpool.” That’s pure gold, Jerry.

  18. Eric: Are they relaunching it as Hex? That’d be amazing.

  19. brandon says:

    The answer is: stabile

Alex, “What is DC’s sales threshold to do a line-wide reboot”

  20. Micah says:

Thanks for the numbers! DC looks to be in prime position for the reboot. I’ve heard that Flashpoint has sold out and that people are buying the tie-ins, as opposed to Fear Itself. The main story is selling but the tie-ins are staying on the shelf.

  21. BobH says:

Ouch, raw top 100 numbers for May were just posted by Diamond, and FLASHPOINT #1 comes in at #2, about 10% under FEAR ITSELF #2. And it doesn’t look like FEAR ITSELF #2 was that strong, either (I’m guessing when the estimates come out it’ll be under 100K, or just barely over). Seems like the decision to reboot the universe came just in time…

  22. Carlos says:

Well, when pretty much everybody was placing their orders for first few issues of Flashpoint popular opinion was “it’s just elseworld that doesn’t matter at all”.

I guess this is going to be one of those rare cases when last issue oversell first one.

  23. Snikt Snakt says:

“You must hate kittens and ice cream, too!”

Dude, kittens & ice cream is my favorite. The really small ones go best with strawberry, I’ve always found.
