WonderCon 11: Traveling day

4 Comments POSTED ON Apr 04 2011 AT 2:55 pm BY The Beat

WonderCon? FUNdercon is more like it. Just this once, we decided to take time off at a show to chill and hang out with pals instead of running around like a maniac. Oh sure, we had our Henry Cavill sighting and late night Fix Comics talks. But the great thing about WonderCon is that you can walk the floor of the Moscone Center taking pictures of people in costumes, and buying sketchbooks from your favorite artists and watching exclusive trailer footage...and then run outside and eat or shop in a full-service, world class city, with ocean front views, tiki bar decadence and other exotic thrills a short ride ride away.

WonderCon 11: NEW Thundercats trailer debuts

3 Comments POSTED ON Apr 04 2011 AT 1:14 pm BY The Beat

This was probably the most buzzed about trailer after GREEN LANTERN at WonderCon. The new Thundercats cartoon is coming to the Cartoon Network "soon." Producers Michael Jelenic (Batman: The Brave and the Bold) and Ethan Spaulding (Avatar: The Last Airbender), art director Dan Norton and voice actor Larry Kenney took part in a panel. Kenney -- who voiced Lion-O in the original but is playing Claudus in the new one -- stole the show with some bawdy comments.

Conte closes print brokering company to become a retailer

2 Comments POSTED ON Apr 04 2011 AT 1:03 pm BY The Beat

Industry veteran Robert V. Conte has long been a behind-the-scenes comics player as owner of Chikara Entertainment, a print broker and book packager who helped with the shift to cheaper Chinese printing, which has allowed many of the lavish but affordable comics reprint series currently available. Conte has announced he's shutting down his business to spend more time with his family. However, he'll stay in the comics world as part owner (with Gary Esposito) of several retail concerns, Brooklyn Comics & More and Manhattan Comics & More, Inc. The latter took over the Cosmic Comics spot on 23rd St.

WonderCon: Day 3

6 Comments POSTED ON Apr 03 2011 AT 1:08 pm BY The Beat

The main word yesterday here was BUSY. Everyone who thought this would be a more chill version of SDCC has found that yesterday, anyway, was more just a scaled down version of SDCC, with giant crowds and lines. But that's not a bad thing. Publishers and cartoonists were selling out of things left and right, and there was lots of buzz about comics. We'll have a fuller report later.

Industry Movers School Ya

4 Comments POSTED ON Apr 02 2011 AT 4:43 pm BY Jen Vaughn

Art schools and apprenticeships find themselves more popular than ever, let's all tip our hats to inspiration artist Rudolph Töpffer's for his creation of boarding school for boys. While anyone can teach themselves and become successful on their own, a lot of the specialty schools allow access to equipment, connections, mentorship of working professionals and opportunities in a condensed amount of time that are priceless.

Archaia announces The Storyteller, Immortals, new publisher

0 Comments POSTED ON Apr 02 2011 AT 3:38 pm BY The Beat

Archaia is having a busy WonderCon, with a bunch of announcements. Yesterday's big story was a GN based on IMMORTALS, an upcoming mythology inspired movie, and today's is an anthology based on The Storyteller, another Jim Henson project from the past -- this one is a little obscure but fondly remembered by many -- basically an old dude would sit there with a dog and tell...stories. Seems ripe for an anthology.

WonderCon 11: Green Lantern panel and footage storm WonderCon

2 Comments POSTED ON Apr 02 2011 AT 2:33 pm BY The Beat

It was the biggest panel of the day at WonderCon, and the most crucial hour yet for the future of the revamped DC Entertainment brand. With appearances by stars Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively, and the first view of effects-heavy footage, the Green Lantern panel was the chance to show that this is indeed the tentpole movie that is going to usher in a new era for DC's superhero universe.. Interest was certainly high, as a line to get in to the 5 pm panel stretched almost around the Moscone center. The panel was led by Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns himself. The only previous GL trailer was heavy on the romance aspect, due to the CGI footage not being ready -- and leading to some questions ever whether this movie was going to please the loyal Green Lantern fanboys. However, this new footage seems to lay those doubts to rest with a spectacular look at Oa, the GL Corps, Sinestro, Tomar Re, and the rest of the Lanternverse. You can read about the panel here, or watch the footage below.
