batman the Return DC Comics Month to Month Sales: November 2010by Marc-Oliver Frisch

On the surface, November was business as usual for DC, with “Brightest Day” and the latest makeover of the Batman line cheerfully purring along. Apart from a handful of strong major books, though, many DC titles displayed sudden, unusually large drops.

See below for the details, and please consider the small print at the end of the column. Thanks to Milton Griepp and ICv2.com for the permission to use their figures. An overview of ICv2.com’s estimates can be found here.

Grant Morrison got his latest revamp of the Batman line underway in November, with four major books. Obviously, the schedule is all over the place, at this stage — they weren’t quite planned to all come out in the same month, but there you go.

Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne #6 and Batman and Robin #16, both of which were meant to be out in September, each had a 1:25 variant-cover edition to boost sales. Batman: The Return #1 (originally scheduled for October) and Batman, Inc. #1 had 1:200 variant editions in addition to the 1:25 ones. Batman and Robin #17, finally, which was solicited with a different creative team and ended up being the first part of a three-issue fill-in run, came with a plain old vanilla 1:10 variant-cover edition.

Given the alternative-cover shenanigans, some distortion is likely to be going on here, but overall, these numbers are solid, if not the kinds of juggernauts you could have expected a couple of years ago. It’s probably not a coincidence that the two books with the 1:200 variants came out on top of the bunch, and it’s probably not a coincidence that the one drawn by David Finch was the best-selling one.

Which brings us to the trend of the month: unusually big drops for an unusually large number of titles. One could say that this doesn’t come as a great surprise, but then again, it wouldn’t have been a great surprise for the last two years or so.

So why is it happening now? Well, maybe the combination of tough economic times, massive cover-price increases, the return of the 1990s gimmick mentality (plastic rings!), Marvel and DC’s increasingly reckless attempts to squeeze their audience dry and the burgeoning alternative of digital comics distribution have finally reached a critical mass.

If November 2010 is any indication, 2011 will be a tough year for the comic-book market, at any rate. Either way, we’re going to find out in a couple of months.

As the book leaves the “Return of Bruce Wayne” storyline behind, sales return to their previous level. Also, there was no variant edition.

This one’s taking its time to bottom out, but given that the franchise seems to have peaked, for the time being, it’s still doing very well.

Sales have been rather erratic lately, and a trend is unlikely to emerge for another few months, given DC’s chaotic management of the book.

For now, the numbers are within the usual range, which means they failed to capitalize on Straczynski’s name.

27 - BATWOMAN
11/2010: Batwoman #0 -- 43,891

An okay number for another Batman spin-off. Compared to Detective Comics #860, the last “Batwoman” issue of the Rucka/Williams team, which sold an estimated 52,295 units in December 2009, this is a marked step down, however. To be fair, the book was already on a slide down the charts back then. There was a 1:10 variant, as usual these days.

—–

33 - SUPERBOY
11/2010: Superboy #1 -- 39,701

Solid debut sales for a Superman spin-off. As we know, though, those can be deceiving. There was a 1:10 variant here, as well.

Not to sound too cynical, but this is as good a debut as anyone could hope for, given the name recognition of the property and the creators.

Maybe the covers by Darwyn Cooke (who did a 1:10 variant) and Frank Quitely (who did the regular version) helped.

290 - VERTIGO RESURRECTED (Vertigo)
10/2010: Vertigo Resurrected #1 -- 10,358
11/2010: The Extremist #1 -- 3,041

This one’s all reprint material, so I’m not counting it as a new release. Overall, though, see above: I doubt The Extremist would have cracked 1,500 units in its first month as a paperback collection, so we can probably expect a lot more of these.

In November, the WildStorm titles Ides of Blood #4 and Telara Chronicles #3 failed to chart. As always, for the purposes of the average periodical statistics below, I’m presuming each of them sold as many units as the No. 300 book on the chart, although the actual number is likely to be lower.

Disclaimers, et cetera

The numbers above are estimates for comic-book sales in the North American direct market, as calculated by ICv2.com according to the chart and index information provided by Diamond Comic Distributors.

ICv2.com’s estimates are somewhat lower than the actual numbers, but they are consistent from month to month, so the trends they show are fairly accurate. Since it’s a “month-to-month” column, the comments, unless otherwise noted, are on the most recent month.

Bear in mind that the figures measure sales to retailers, not customers. Also, these numbers do not include sales to bookstores, newsstands, other mass-market retail chains or the United Kingdom. Re-orders are included, so long as they either reached stores in a book’s initial calendar month of release or were strong enough to make the chart again in a subsequent month.

If additional copies of an issue did appear on the chart after a book’s initial calendar month of release, you can see the total number of copies sold in parenthesis behind those issues (e.g. “[36,599]“). Should more than one issue have shipped in a month which is relevant for one of the long-term comparisons, the average between them will be used.

Titles released under the Johnny DC imprint and magazines, such as Mad, mostly sell through channels other than the direct market, so direct-market sales don’t tell us much about their performance. For most Vertigo and some WildStorm titles, collection sales tend to be a significant factor, so the numbers for those books should be taken with a grain of salt as well. To learn (a little) more about Vertigo’s collection sales, go right here.

** Two asterisks after a given month in the average charts mean that one or more periodical release did not make the Top 300 chart in that month. In those cases, it’s assumed that said releases sold as many units as the No. 300 comic on the chart for that month for the purposes of the chart, although its actual sales are likely to be less than that.

For a more lyrical approach to discussing sales figures that covers all the essentials in a more condensed, less tedious fashion, finally, go right here.

  1. Ryan Higgins says:

Very strange, we’ve had at least very stable numbers on most DC books, and a few have even gone up over the past few months.

I wonder how many drops are from stores just closing, over other stores cutting orders.

  2. I wonder if the huge success of Batman & Green Lantern has polarized DC (11 titles? between the two characters), and everything else takes a backseat in promotion and talent?

Not that I don’t love BM & GL, but I’ve had to seriously agonize over which titles I would be dropping so as not to go over budget….because I would like to collect Flash, Green Arrow, & Superman as well.

I am of the opinion that these numbers may just be becoming the “norm” in the industry….a few big sellers at the top and miserable numbers for everything else. Economy, digital comics, more graphic novel/collections sales, etc. may just be slowly eroding away the monthly numbers. Just look at Northlanders monthly sales versus graphic novel sales….and realize that they may be what the Green Arrow/Hawkman/Atom/Power Girl/etc. “B-Rated” characters #’s may be in a few years.

Overall, I don’t see Batman Inc. surviving much after Morrison leaves it, and the miserable #’s of the BM spin-offs means that the character will be back to 3 titles within 2-3 years, which is far healthier in the long run. Emerald Warriors won’t survive either (even though I love it), because GL can only support 2 books without huge mega-events…..so I guess it’s all circular if you’re willing to wait 3-5 years.

  3. Micah says:

I’m excited for DC’s output in the Spring. I’ll be getting the Green Latern books for the cross-over and picking up Action. Too bad they don’t just trash the JMS runs and hand it over to someone else. Why would the trudge through a plot abandoned by the key writer? Just wrap up the storylines and move along! I want to see what’s next for Superman.

  4. Alan Waid says:

Would it be possible to make comments in your article without the constant sniping? To date you havent been able to manage it yet.

  5. Rob S. says:

Re: Detective 871: “The arrival of the new creative team attracts a moderate degree of curiosity.”

Didn’t it sell out and a reprint is on its way? Sounds like it attracted more curiosity from readers than retailers.

  6. I haven’t read it yet because the opening line topped me cold. DC had 8 of the 10 spots and its “business as usual”?

    Why always so negative?

  7. I like the sniping. Keep it up.

  8. AwesomeDude says:

Marc does not like DC nor does he like Super-hero books. But that’s his prerogative, he does take the time to write it after all. It’s his call. Chillax yo.

  9. Colin:

“I haven’t read it yet because the opening line topped me cold. DC had 8 of the 10 spots and its “business as usual”?”

I see your point. In the greater shape of things, though, the chart positions are pretty meaningless, because they tell you nothing about the numbers.

Case in point, DC may have owned the Top 10 in November, but their average numbers were well within the usual range, and their total dollar sales were actually down from October.

  10. John says:

That first Freedom Fighters series was great. That book actually brought me back to DC after swearing never to read their books again after the Death of Superman and Broken Back Batman crap of the 90s. But the FF follow up was pretty bad with horrible art. This new one is a tad better, but nothing like that first great story.

  11. EJ says:

You know I too was surprised by some of the drops in November, I have a couple of theory about it.

I think that some of these book are finally coming back to earth after the events of BN and BD. GL was selling alot more copies since the prelude to BN than it was before. So after about 2 years plus of build up and hype it might just be coming back down to it’s normal level.

Same for GLC another book which began to experience big gains in sales since SCW, there is only so much a monthly comic can grow due to events until it maxes out.

The real story will probably play out in the coming year with War Of The Green Lanterns staying a GL family crossover. We’ll see if things have peaked for these books or not, maybe December sales might have the first clues to what this all means in the big picture.

  12. I think Ryan’s comment about how many of these drops can be attributed to store closings is interesting, especially in relation to how many new stores are opening, but this is a part of the “big picture” that just about no one except for Diamond is privy to.

Are there a lot of stores closing? How many is a lot? How many close in an “average” year? How many new stores opened last year? How many new stores opened in the last five years – is that number slowing down or increasing?

  13. Colin says:

Curious drops across the board and all sorts of assumptions are made as to why this might be. Except one.

Is it possible that there is a problem in the way these estimates are made? This isn’t knee jerk defending of DC, the sales figures or the like, just an obviousness alternative possibility that has been ignored for such a seemingly improbable drop.

I have no further evidence about the sales to support this but looking at the figures and the fact we know these are best guesses this should be considered?

  14. Paul O'Brien says:

Colin, while we call them “estimates”, it’s ultimately just a matter of finding a publisher who’s willing to reveal their true figures, and then working out the rest using the index point data provided by Diamond and applying basic maths. The real need for caution arises because of the substantial proportion of sales that aren’t covered by the Diamond chart in the first place.

That’s not to say that maths errors are impossible – it did happen a few years ago when ICV2 produced a chart that had almost everything understated by about 10% – but if that were the case then (a) it would almost certainly affect every title on the chart, and (b) it would not affect the similar estimates produced by people like John Jackson Miller.

In this case, it’s hard to test (a) because this was a month when Marvel didn’t ship many variant covers and so you’d expect a lot of their books to be down anyway, but so far as it’s possible to judge, there’s nothing particularly unusual about their figures. As for (b), Miller’s figures are exactly the same as ICV2’s, which seems to rule out a calculation error on either side.

  15. Dave says:

The “unusually big drops for an unusually large number of titles” can be attributed (at least in part) to DC pumping out umpty-teen Batman titles in November. Most comics buyers are operating on a relatively fixed comic book budget, so buying all those ‘must-have’ Batman titles no doubt led to not getting other DC comics.

The danger in that for DC is that once someone misses one issue of a title they are only moderately interested in, they are quite likely to stop buying it all together. This is just one way in which the event mentality is hurting comics.

  16. Colin:

“Is it possible that there is a problem in the way these estimates are made?”

To add to what Paul said: Errors can never be ruled out, in theory. But in the six or seven years I’ve been watching these figures, I think it happened only twice that errors at the calculation stage occurred — and in both instances, as I recall, Paul and I noticed that something was off before anybody else did, and the statistics were subsequently corrected.

It’s still possible that something unusual occurred that accounts for the unusual behavior of individual books that we can’t figure out by looking at the figures, of course. But as far as the November chart is concerned, none of the alarm bells were set off.

For instance, I checked whether the appropriate books all came out in the same week, or in the last week of the month, which is usually the first sign that there’s a truck stuck in a blizzard in Oklahoma somewhere. But they didn’t; they’re pretty evenly spread across the month. For instance, neither BIRDS OF PREY nor JUSTICE LEAGUE, which are two of the worst offenders, came out in the last week of November; nor did they come out in the same week.

Also, if it turns out that a truck carrying 5,000 units of BIRDS OF PREY #6 got stuck in a river bed and couldn’t be found, pulled out or cleared for several weeks, or something like that (although it’s unlikely, because chances are we’d heard about that), there will be a correction on the December chart — probably in the shape of 5,000 copies of “reorders” for BOP #6, should they make the chart, and most definitely in the shape of a significant sales increase for BOP #7.

Unless, you know, the same mysterious event occurs for two issues in a row, in which case: rinse, repeat.

  17. DanielT says:

The obvious message to me is that by the end of Sep lots of persons stopped buying comics and retailers adjusted their orders accordingly.

I think the January numbers might be really, really ugly.

  18. Chris Hero says:

Scooby Doo is still holding up in the 5 year/ 2 year/ 1 year comparisons. I still say put that editorial team in charge of the superhero books that are falling.

If there was an error in the numbers, it seems strange it would only manifest in a few titles and not across the boards. I think the DM is just starting to contract, which makes sense when factoring in the economy.

  19. I find the same numbers, as seen here (http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2010/2010-11.html) but as Heidi has just passed along, I did find that the unit and dollar columns were transposed when Diamond did its percentage change table for the overall industry. This is a lot of new information, and there’s a period of adjustment on all sides in using it.

As to month-to-month changes within titles, I’ve said before here there can be a wide variety of reasons for them, not all of which would be reflective of a title’s actual sales. If the figures are firm, however, one possible explanation might be found in cover price — November saw the average weighted price of comics bought break the old record by 11 cents!

  20. Roman Bednar says:

Work and family takes me regularly from Calgary to Seattle, Vancouver and Edmonton and part of my routine when travelling is to try and buy my comics wherever I am. In 3 of the 4 stores that I shop at, they are running pretty lean. They really do seem to be cutting down on their orders.

For the first time in a long while I also had problems finding a few titles that I wanted to buy at my LCS. Batman and Robin #16, the first Snyder/Jock Detective comics #871, #1 of the Brubaker/Phillips Incognito: Bad Influences and the first issues of the Cornell/Woods run on Action Comics were sold out and I had to wait for reorders to pick them up.

  21. Tim says:

Batwoman 0 has 7K more sales than the book in which she debuted this month. Her book sales are disappointing? And Detective’s are encouraging? Interesting philosophy…

  22. Tim says:

Understanding, of course, that the actual ‘debut’ was 52.

  23. Tim:

“Batwoman 0 has 7K more sales than the book in which she debuted this month. Her book sales are disappointing? And Detective’s are encouraging?”

That’s not quite what I said, is it?

  24. AO says:

Considering all of the artistic changes since it launched, I’m not at all surprised to see Birds of Prey down so much. Unless/until a recognizable artist is brought in to replace Ed Benes, I’d ultimately expect it to settle close to (but probably just above) the level of Simone’s Secret Six.

  25. James says:

    27 – BATWOMAN
    11/2010: Batwoman #0 — 43,891
An okay number for another Batman spin-off. Compared to Detective Comics #860, the last “Batwoman” issue of the Rucka/Williams team, which sold an estimated 52,295 units in December 2009, this is a marked step down, however.

Keep in mind Rucka is not attached anymore, and the issue is $3.99, with minimal story pages.
Both of which kept me away – and the fact my previous experience with artists trying to write have not been pleasant reads.

  26. Heinz Hochkoepper says:

The drops don’t seem too worrying to me, because a) they aren’t occuring across the board (look how stable the two biweeklies are, for instance) and b) they’re mostly on titles that were doing better than expected in recent months. I guess it’s just some of that Brightest Day magic wearing off, and retailers reacting a bit more sharply than they would in a different economic climate. Now, if you want to see some really awful drops, look at the Marvel chart.

  27. Brendan T says:

    @James

    Batwoman #0 was $2.99

  28. Peter Urkowitz says:

Does it seem like DC has been doing better at releasing most of their books on a monthly schedule? Sincere question here.

Oh, wait, they have had some trouble recently with the JMS Superman, and at least one of the Batman titles, right? But overall across the line, has there been any improvement? Just looking at this list, it seems like the last half-year or so has been pretty good. Hasn’t it?

Hmm, maybe I’d better actually count…okay, looking just since June, about 49 or 50 series published every month, and about 16 series missed a month or two in that time. Um, not sure how that compares to the past, but maybe that’s not that great after all.

Any thoughts on how those delays affect sales in the longer run? I recall there being some discussion of this in the past, but I don’t remember details, or if anybody analyzed the effects of lateness.

  29. JeffF says:

“The “unusually big drops for an unusually large number of titles” can be attributed (at least in part) to DC pumping out umpty-teen Batman titles in November. Most comics buyers are operating on a relatively fixed comic book budget, so buying all those ‘must-have’ Batman titles no doubt led to not getting other DC comics.”

These are sales to retailers, not readers. So are the readers cutting their holds to buy the ‘must-have’ books, or are retailers anticipating people buying the big books and are cutting orders line-wide to compensate? I see what you are saying, but I don’t know if these numbers justify that.

“Keep in mind Rucka is not attached anymore, and the issue is $3.99, with minimal story pages.
Both of which kept me away – and the fact my previous experience with artists trying to write have not been pleasant reads.”

I’ll agree with that, but I’m giving Williams the benefit of the doubt here. While I have to buy his amazing art regardless, I have higher hopes that he gleaned some storytelling techniques from his years working with that guy on Promethea.

  30. Rob S. says:

    Burn baby burn!

  31. PeterCSM says:

It bugs me that Batman – The Return was #1 when it cost $5 for 30 pages of story.

  32. Are retailers ordering fewer INITIAL copies, and placing reorders for when titles begin to sell?

Regarding Batwoman #0, her first storyline in Detective had an amazing promotional launch, including a preview in the NYCC program book. Rucka writing, Williams drawing.

Now you have an issue #0, which some readers and retailers will consider to be a reprint of some sort. (It actually involved Batman proving his hypothesis that Kate Kane was Batwoman.) The story was decent, a nice continuation of the initial Detective series.

Wait six months and see how this series performs. I hope DC keeps it separate from the “Batman Etc.” comics currently being published, if only to keep it accessible to the general reader.

And in case you missed it, Superman/Batman #78 was the type of story DC once collected in their “Year’s Best” anthologies; a fun, done-in-one story. The Action Comics annual featuring Lex Luthor’s daddy issues (four are featured in this issue) was also quite good.

Interesting… the two series with Green Lanterns that do not tie into Brightest Day (REBELS, Legion) are not selling too well. The Legion actually deals with the future GLs, and includes an actual Legionnaire as GL! Wonder if Batman Beyond meeting the Justice League will suffer the same fate?

  33. Shawn Hill says:

“I’ll agree with that, but I’m giving Williams the benefit of the doubt here. While I have to buy his amazing art regardless, I have higher hopes that he gleaned some storytelling techniques from his years working with that guy on Promethea.”

He’s also working with collaborators, so the zero issue hopefully augurs well for what’s to come. Those amazing panel designs were still there, and the story was readable. I showed the issue to someone who never read Detective, and he’s going to read the series now.
