It’s the height of crossover season at Marvel, as SIEGE enters its second month, while “Fall of the Hulks” and “Necrosha-X” also continue through their respective books. Oh, and BLACK PANTHER is replaced on the schedules by DOOMWAR, starring half the Marvel Universe.
February also saw the next phase of the Ultimate relaunch, with the debut of ULTIMATE COMICS X. Further down the chart, there’s a wave of cancellations, with the final issues of MS MARVEL, DOCTOR VOODOO and INCREDIBLE HERCULES (though that last one is pretty clearly coming back).
This month’s variant cover theme: Deadpool. For those of you who literally can’t get enough of him.
As per usual, Marvel had the biggest share of the North American direct market, beating DC by 45% to 34% in terms of units, and 42% to 31% in dollar terms.
Thanks as always to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their figures for these cancellations.

2. SIEGE 01/10 Siege #1 of 4 - 108,484 02/10 Siege #2 of 4 - 108,429 (-0.0%)
Well, that’s interesting. If this is to be believed, then SIEGE has lost only 55 sales between its first two issues.
The overwhelming majority of titles have a big drop between issues #1 and #2, for fairly obvious reasons. It’s not completely unknown for a book to hold steady or climb, but it’s extremely unusual, and usually connected with something like a crossover. There’s nothing of that sort here.
So a more likely explanation is a theory which was floated in the comments section last month. SIEGE #1 was partially returnable (albeit under limited conditions). Diamond may have scaled back its sales to reflect that promotion. They’ve done this in the past for comics which were solicited on a returnable basis. The logic, presumably, is that retailers will order more copies of a returnable book because there’s less risk in doing so; therefore, the chart needs to be adjusted to avoid comparing apples with oranges.
Unfortunately, Diamond have never made clear quite how much they’re deducting in these cases. The best guide we have comes from books like 52, which were returnable for the first few issues, and had settled into a pattern by the time the promotion ended. That book actually jumped up the charts by 20% or so when returnability ceased. This doesn’t mean, however, that the reduction was 20%. The starting number might have been even higher due to the returnability offer. But the implication is that Diamond have been overcorrecting by about 20%, which, as it happens, would broadly match the sort of drop we’d normally expect on a second issue. That would go some way towards improving the sales on SIEGE #1, though it would still come in a distant last place among Marvel’s event minis of the last few years.
Then again, it’s always possible that Diamond have changed their deduction since the last time. Or perhaps this sales oddity has an entirely unrelated cause. The chart is an unsatisfactory beast at times.

Again, the second part of a Siege tie-in. As with DARK AVENGERS, sales are up, but not by enough to cancel out the drops of the last year. The six month and one year comparisons are exaggerated, though, since they’re both with issues that had one-off spikes.
NEW AVENGERS ends wth issue #64, to be relaunched with a fresh issue #1.

Issue #620 has the obligatory Deadpool cover. Otherwise, we may be back on a slight downward drift, with issue #622 getting down to the 54K range. However, as you can see, AMAZING has developed unusual sales patterns – it wavers up and down, apparently depending on storylines and variants.
16. ULTIMATE COMICS X 02/10 Ultimate Comics X #1 - 59,159
The cover logo actually says ULTIMATE X, but the solicitations and the chart both say this is called ULTIMATE COMICS X, so there you go.
This is third ongoing title for the relaunched Ultimate imprint. So far the relaunch doesn’t seem to have done much good in revitalising things. This book is the spiritual successor to ULTIMATE X-MEN, which was selling in the mid-40K range when the axe fell at the start of last year. But while ULTIMATE COMICS X launches with a more impressive 59K figure, it achieves that with the help of six different covers, including 1:15 and 1:25 incentives. Given that, and the usual level of drop-off for a second issue, I’d expect this one to drop back fairly quickly.
For what it’s worth, orders of 59,159 would put this book just below the level of ULTIMATE COMICS AVENGERS #4, which sold 59,023 in November 2009 before honouring the traditions of its forefathers and spiralling off schedule.

Another “Fall of the Hulks” tie-in. Issue #606 picks up re-orders of 3,342, so there’s some interest in this event. Nonetheless, the general trend remains downhill. This issue also has a variant cover.
In fairness, INCREDIBLE HULK is just the Hulk’s B-title these days, and it’s still doing better than it was four years ago when it was his main book.

Well, that certainly helped. DOOMWAR is effectively BLACK PANTHER with a whole load of guest stars, and I’m treating it as a continuation of the title. The stunt seems to have worked – sales shoot up to a very respectable level. There’s also a “Women of Marvel” variant cover on this, which will help a bit.
A glance at the history will show that BLACK PANTHER has been propelled to these heights in the past, and it’s never stuck. Still, it’s clearly one of those titles that Marvel won’t give up on without a fight.

Disregarding variant covers, this looks to be settling down in the high 30K range. That’s not great by the book’s standards over recent years, but then the market as a whole is down, and the book also has a comparatively low-profile creative team at the moment.

124. IRON MAN: I AM IRON MAN 01/10 I Am Iron Man #1 of 2 - 17,544 02/10 I Am Iron Man #2 of 2 - 12,595 (-28.2%) 134. IRON MAN VS WHIPLASH 12/09 Whiplash #1 of 4 - 20,126 12/09 Whiplash #2 of 4 - 15,494 (-23.0%) 01/10 Whiplash #3 of 4 - 12,886 (-16.8%) 02/10 Whiplash #4 of 4 - 11,274 (-12.5%)
Again, we’ll depart slightly from the chart order to take these two together. They’re Iron Man minis – one an adaptation of the original film, the other featuring a villain from the new film. Neither has sold very well in the direct market, but then they’re generating material for use in collected editions to coincide with the movie release.

The final issue of this run, having brought AMAZING SPIDER-MAN more or less up to date, and completed both IRON MAN and UNCANNY X-MEN. Surprisingly, given the modest sales, but very happily for continuity nerds like me, a new series begins in May, covering AVENGERS, CAPTAIN AMERICA and THOR. Obviously the economics for a project like this are completely different from a regular comic. There’s also a collected edition of the Iron Man Index available, which might be a more appealing format to some people.

Spider-Woman is cancelled. It MIGHT be revived later, but there are no definite plans. Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy, on the other hand, are supposed to be on hiatus while the Thanos mini runs.
Looking at the 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year comparisons, I have to wonder whether there is a statistically significant relationship between Marvel’s price hikes and sales drops on mini-series and top-tier titles. In comparison, the lower-priced, lower-selling books above cancellation level seem to be more stable (but they had smaller audiences in the first place). Hard to say without controlling for the state of the economy and other variables, but it does make me curious.
Are Nova & Guardians ‘officially’ cancelled? I don’t remember seeing an announcement of such. I think they may be on hiatus…
Nova and Guardians may not be officially cancelled (and I hope not), but weren’t Immortal Iron Fist and Ghost Rider also placed on “hiatus” during replacement mini series? They don’t look they’re coming back soon either.
Another cosmic event would be a great reason to keep Nova and Guardians around, but it appears Marvel doesn’t have confidence in their sales potential.
Maybe this is Marvel testing the theory that families of titles are more than the market can bare? Concentrate sales and keep production costs in check by focusing on only one cosmic Marvel title?
Thanks as always for the analysis, Paul. I hadn’t heard Nova and GotG were taking a break during the Thanos mini…I really hope it is just a hiatus as those are two of my favorite Marvel books going right now, especially with Incredible Herc gone for now.

02/10 Uranian #2 of 3 – 9,981 (-30.0%)Only about 3,000 behind the parent title, but I question the logic of doing spin-offs for books selling at that level.”
Isn’t the parent title of this book Dark Avengers?
Fewer people buying fewer titles. The price increase has maintained the dollar sales for the upper-tier books, but siphoned off readership from the mid- and low-tier books. “Pizza the Hut … the notorious gangster got locked in his stretched limo and ate himself to death.”
Isn’t the parent title of this book Dark Avengers?
No, it’s AGENTS OF ATLAS. The book is about Bob Grayson (the 1950s Marvel Boy) rather than Noh-Varr (Grant Morrison’s Marvel Boy).
Jason: it’s not that Marvel Boy. The one selling just under 10k is the character from Agents of Atlas.
Stephen King’s N was a web comic that came before Spider-Woman that just now is being turned into comic form. Maleev has to have been done with it for a few years now.
“79. NOVA
80. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
Both cancelled in April, with a Thanos miniseries taking over as the main cosmic title.”
Yeah, my guess is that either these books will be back after the Thanos mini or we’ll have a couple new titles.
“113. STRANGE
Considering that the book wasn’t heavily promoted, I suppose this isn’t so bad.”
No, that isn’t bad and it is a shame that more people didn’t read this mini. I thought it was really well done and a pretty cool look at Strange now that he is no longer the big cheese of magic.
They can use some new characters…that arent “related” to existing ones.
The up and down numbers of Amazing Spider-Man really baffle me. Have you ever seen another title with those large of reoccurring swings?
I realize it is hard to compare to other titles because there really are not any that switch creative teams every 3 issues.
Still very strange though.
Is there any method to the madness? Are the upswings happening with a particular creative team and the downswings with another? Or does it all appear completely random?
Paul O’Brien commented on it, but I would have to think that Amazing Spider-Man’s numbers would cause Marvel concern. Even with the ‘ups and downs’ 53,000 units is a new low for the title, and there seems to be a definite downward trends over the last six months or so (although with individual ebbs and flows within this).
Good to see Criminal continuing to perform consistently – its always my first-read in the pile..
New characters, maybe, but not related to existing ones? Good luck. Have there been any successful properties like that? Seems like when a company tries that (Simon Dark, Power Company, Agents of Atlas), they fail hard.
I think at least part of the poor sales of BLACK WIDOW: DEADLY ORIGIN can be attributed to the $3.99 cover price. Why in the world would you pay $16 for the entire four-issue mini-series when you can get it in a hardcover collection on Amazon.com for $13.59?

Marvel will doubtless keep the Noir imprint going a bit longer while there’s stuff like this coming out:

As others have alluded, Bendis’ editorial at the end of Spider-Woman makes it sound pretty definitively that the book’s suspended indefinitely, as apparently Maleev worked his butt off doing revision after revision for the motion comic. Pretty amazing that a book that was “coming soon” for so very long eventually came and went with almost no splash at all.
This was the first I’ve heard of Nova and GotG being suspended. Hopefully they’ll come back in some form or other after the Thanos thing, as they’re actually quite enjoyable. I was late to the cosmic stuff, because I skipped the first couple of cosmic events to try to avoid buying SO MANY BOOKS, but I eventually did get sucked into the cosmic stuff, and it’s quite good.
On the whole, I’m glad to see quite a few books ending or winding down – the line has gotten out of control. Not that I think Marvel won’t just replace the stuff that’s getting cancelled with yet MORE stuff, instead of just concentrating on building up a good core of strong titles.
Wow, I haven’t read these sales figures reports for a few years now, and I’m amazed by how much they’ve fallen…
I got bored at work yesterday, so here’s a chart of every issue of Amazing Spider-Man since Brand New Day started.

The basic trend, obviously, is down-down-down. There are various up and downs from variant covers and what have you, but it looks like the only times they’ve been able to stop the trend are…
- #568-573: “New Ways To Die” by Slott and Romita Jr. gets a big bump.
- #595-603: “American Son” Dark Reign tie-in by Joe Kelly and various artists, anniversay issue, then the return of Mary Jane, although the fact that it drops off in the middle of the latter makes me think the boost there is variant covers.
Basically, looking at the trend, the book was slowly settling into the upper 50ks before that #595-603 period, which helped boost the overall trend back above 60k. Then the Gauntlet storyline (which was pushed just as heavily, if not more heavily than, New Ways To Die) kicked off and started the downhill trend again. The random blips are the “first of a story arc” variant cover issues, but otherwise The Gauntlet appears to have accelerated the book’s drop rather than leading readers into a “bold new direction.”
Personally, I don’t buy Weapon X because of the $3.99 cover price. It’s a good book, but it’s too quick a read to drop that much dinero on. That said, the pub crawl issue with Captain America was pretty good so I did pick up a copy –but still not sure it was worth four bucks.
I really hope that Nova and Guardians make a comeback. I’ve enjoyed all the Abnett and Lanning cosmic stuff dating back to Annihilation.
