Just released via the Source blog, some info on BRIGHTEST DAY, the new miniseries that follows up BLACKEST NIGHT:
The questions appear often and in variations: What is BRIGHTEST DAY? How does BLACKEST NIGHT end? And what’s next for the DCU?
Well, we won’t spoil it all for you here, but we can throw another major piece to the puzzle on the table, and that’s this amazing David Finch cover to BRIGHTEST DAY #2, featuring a certain King of the Seas. And we not only have art to show, but we caught up with BRIGHTEST DAY writer Geoff Johns to give us his thoughts. Take it away, Geoff:
“Brightest Day’ is about second chances. I think it’s been obvious from day one that there are major plans for the heroes and villains from Aquaman to take center stage in the DC Universe, among many others, post-Blackest Night. ‘Brightest Day’ is not a banner or a vague catch-all direction for the DC Universe, it is a story. Nor is ‘Brightest Day’ a sign that the DC Universe is going to be all about ‘light and brighty’ superheroes. Some second chances work out…some don’t.”
So I guess Aquaman isn’t one of the Secret Avengers?
If I never hear “light and brighty” again, it will be too soon.
I guess that’s a tease to find out if Aquaman has finally gotten his hand back.
His new power is a razor?
Heroes being heroes again, how ’bout that.
I can’t say much for Johns’s promotional effort. What is someone who isn’t an Aquaman fan supposed to think? Even among fans, a quick check of blogs found complaints of abuse, neglect, and lack of importance.
A comparable move by Marvel would involve reviving the Champions or the Secret Defenders.

The events all feels very paint-by-the-numbers at this point. When everything is part of a publicized event, how can anything surprise or amuse or even piss you off?

So I guess this means he won’t be acting like the Steve Reeves version in “Batman: Brave and the Bold”…

Good to know that – even though the Beat has moved – it still has that same Newsarama aroma in the comments section. I guess all of you negative nancies all started reading comics with Chris Ware, Jeff Smith and Harvey Pekar and knew as nine year olds to skip those silly super hero books. Geez – you know what’s worse than the so-called 40-year old comic readers you all like to perpetuate? 40 year old sourpusses.
For those who are interested, the potential of having all of DC’s big seven back is of keen interest. I’m looking forward to the extended Aquaman family and it looks like those that thought certain characters would return to life by the end of Blackest Night are spot on.
Now let’s hope they trade up at least the first 25 issues or so of Peter David’s Aquaman run or Atlantis Chronicles. That was good reading.
@Mikael — Here, here. I, for one, am really hoping this is a return of the classic Aquaman for semi-good. Loved the character since I was a little boy, Love to see DC giving him this exposure.
I’m looking forward to ‘Brightest Day.’ Hoping that Blue Beetle (aka Ted Kord) gets a “second chance” and returns to the DCU!

As if this resurrection wasn’t already prescribed by Mera’s prominence in Blackest Night.
Perhaps you’re excited by the idea of the broken toys getting put back in the toy box, but you can definitely count me in as being unimpressed by what’s been ‘revealed’ thus far. When a company can’t even get Superman right, how’s somebody as chronically misused as Aquaman going to fair? The script practically writes itself at this point.

Of course not, that would make for an enjoyable comic. Johns is constitutionally incapable of writing comics without buckets of gratuitous gore, dismemberment, and cheap sentiment. I expect Aquaman to have the other hand and a foot or two gnawed off by piranha since Johns is involved.
The bitterness some comic book fans are bathed in truly is sad and pathetic. This is a great day Aquaman is coming back and being written by a guy who is known for writting iconic characters the right way and bringing back to prominance. But instead we have the usual fanboy moaning and crying about everything even before the comics come out it’s no wonder people think so little of comic book fans.
Maybe this time Aquaman will have the powers of a flying fish – like he does on the Superfriends, soaring into space side by side with his buddies Superman and Wonder Woman.
