[Editor's note: the DC Sales chart will appear tomorrow.]

By Matthew Murray

Buffy tops the charts yet again, while further down the charts there are some rather large drops that may be due to Diamond’s decision not to ship any comics in the last week of December.

Incorruptible, the spin-off from Mark Waid’s Irredeemable, was the highest selling launch of the month, somehow managing to sell more copies than any regularly priced issue of the parent title.

As with last month, I’ve listed every “indie” title in the top 200, and a selection of those appearing lower on the charts.

Thanks to icv2.com and Milton Griepp for permission to use these numbers, which can be found here.

38. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (Dark Horse)

12/2007: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #9 - 89,556
12/2008: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #20 - 71,896

=====
01/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #21 - 69,980
02/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #22 - 67,575 (-3.4%)
03/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 - 64,108 (-5.1%)
04/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #24 - 60,916 (-5.0%)
05/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #25 - 58,740 (-3.6%)
06/2009: BTVS Tales of the Vampires one shot- 45,568 (-22.4)
07/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #26 - 55,393 (+21.6%)
08/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #27 - 53,403 (-3.6%)
09/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #28 - 52,303 (-2.1%)
10/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #29 - 50,236 (-4.0%)
11/2009: Buffy the Vampire Slayer #30 - 49,155 (-2.2%)
12/2009: BTVS Willow One Shot - 45,136 (-8.2%)
				6 month (-0.9)
				1 year (-37.2%)
				2 year (-49.6%)

Considering this was written by Joss Whedon and about a fairly popular character I thought this would sell about the same as the normal series, or at least better than the last one shot. It is possible that some of the missing sales were due to this issue shipping the week before Diamond’s week off. Still, as the cost of the issue was $3.50, it actually brought in more money than last month’s issue.

76. Haunt (Image)

10/2009: Haunt #1 - 50,078
11/2009: Haunt #2 - 28,254 (-43.6%)
12/2009: Haunt #3 - 28,390 (+0.5%)

Looks like stores cut their orders of issue two a bit too steeply. A rise for issue three is a very good sign.

79. Image United (Image)

11/2009: Image United # 1 - 42,866
12/2009: Image United #2 - 27,469 (-35.9%)

The upcoming delays aren’t going to help this series.

				2 year (+6.9%)

It looks like Kirkman’s books have stopped climbing for the time being.

89. The Boys (Dynamite)

12/2006: The Boys #6 (DC) - 27,039
12/2007: The Boys #13 - 29,195

				6 month (-5.6%)
				1 year (-11.5%)
				2 year (-17.7%)
				3 year (-11.1%)

I’m not sure about the reasons for this increase. This issue featured the origin of the Frenchman.

103, 125. Angel (IDW)

12/2007: After the Fall #2 - 44,792
12/2008: After the Fall #15 - 37,649

=====
01/2009: After the Fall #16 - 34,801
02/2009: After the Fall #17 - 32,842 (-5.6%)
02/2009: Angel #18 - 32,061 (-2.4%)

08/2009: Angel #24 - 22,795 (-5.0%)
09/2009: Angel #25 - 23,815 (+4.5%)
10/2009: Angel #26 - 22,886 (-3.9%)
11/2009: Angel #27 - 20,731 (-9.4%)
12/2009: Angel #28 - 21,301 (+2.7%)
12/2009: Angel Annual #1 - 16,616 (-22.0%)
				6 month (-22.5%)
				1 year (-43.4%)
				2 year (-52.4%)

Bill Willingham’s first issue sees a slight increase, however there was a second printing that didn’t ship until January, so there was evidently more interest than first though.

The annual, written by original writer Brian Lynch, cost $7.99, and by that standard is a huge success, especially for an adaptation of a fake Hollywood movie based on After the Fall.

105. Star Wars Legacy (Dark Horse)

12/2008: Star Wars Legacy #31 - 27,386

=====
01/2009: Star Wars Legacy #32 - 25,814
02/2009: Star Wars Legacy #33 - 25,389 (-1.6%)
03/2009: Star Wars Legacy #34 - 25,304 (-0.3%)

06/2009: Star Wars Legacy #37 - 23,704 (-1.9%)
07/2009: Star Wars Legacy #38 - 23,162 (-2.3%)
08/2009: Star Wars Legacy #39 - 22,888 (-1.2%)
09/2009: Star Wars Legacy #40 - 22,555 (-1.5%)
10/2009: Star Wars Legacy #41 - 22,109 (-2.0%)
11/2009: Star Wars Legacy #42 - 21,659 (-2.0%)
12/2009: Star Wars Legacy #43 - 20,983 (-3.1%)
				6 month (-11.5%)
				1 year (-23.4%)

Soon to be the only ongoing Star Wars title.

108. Hellboy (Dark Horse)

12/2008: The Wild Hunt #1 (of 8 ) - 24,947

=====
01/2009: The Wild Hunt #2 (of 8 ) - 22,784
02/2009: The Wild Hunt #3 (of 8 ) - 21,664 (-4.9%)
03/2009: The Wild Hunt #4 (of 8 ) - 21,743 (+0.4%)
04/2009: -
05/2009: -
06/2009: -
07/2009: -
08/2009: The Wild Hunt #5 (of 8 ) - 20,375 (-6.3%)
09/2009: The Wild Hunt #6 (of 8 ) - 20,146 (-1.1)
10/2009: The Wild Hunt #7 (of 8 ) - 19,414 (-3.6%)
11/2009: The Wild Hunt #8 (of 8 ) - 18,942 (-2.4%)
12/2009: Bride of Hell One Shot - 20,761 (+9.6%)
				6 month (n.a.)
				1 year (-16.8%)

Even when factoring in the increased price for this one shot ($3.50 instead of the usual $2.99) that one year comparison shows that interest in Hellboy seems to have dropped off quite a lot. No books have been announced for 2010 yet, so it looks like they’re taking a bit of a break.

133, 142. GI Joe (IDW)

12/2004: GI Joe #37 (Devil’s Due) - 23,086
12/2005: America’s Elite #6 (Devil’s Due) - 20,139
12/2006: America’s Elite #18 (Devil’s Due) - 16,710

12/2009: GI Joe #12 - 14,824 (-4.5%)
12/2009: GI Joe #13 - 15,759 (+6.3%)
				6 month (-24.3%)
				1 year (n.a.)
				2 year (+8.0%)
				3 year (-5.7%)
				4 year (-21.7%)
				5 year (-31.7%)

Two issues this month, and I’m just mystified by the increase for issue 13. Robert Atkins returned as the artist, and a new storyline starring Tripwire starts, but would those increase sales like this?

134. Incorruptible (Boom)

12/2009: Incorruptible #1 - 15,710

The spin-off from Irredeemable launches higher than any (non-discounted) issue of that title has sold to date. A very good start.

137. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (Dark Horse)

12/2006: Knights of the Old Republic #11 - 24,437

Another drop this month, but I doubt Kirkman’s worrying.

05/2009: Irredeemable #2 - 9,962 (-24.6%)

12/2009: Irredeemable #9 - 13,515 (-1.3%)

A small drop this month, but it’s quite solid. Volume two of the collections has first month sales of 3,423.

153. Star Wars Clone Wars (Dark Horse)

Lower sales than usual, but that’s kind of to be expected for a side series like this. We’ll see next month if the decline that’s seen on Hellboy is replicated here.

This is supposed to run twelve issues, if drops like this continue it’s going to get ugly. This shipped December 16th, so shouldn’t have been affected by the skipped ship week at the end of the month.

Oddly large drop this month after months of increases, perhaps due to shipping the week before the skip week.

12/2009: Transformers Ongoing #2 - 12,516 (-17.8%)
				6 month (+3.2%)
				1 year (+5.7%)

The last series was remarkably stable. If this one can keep that up it should be around for a while.

163. GI Joe Origins (IDW)

Back in a fairly standard decline.

10/2009: -
11/2009: -
12/2009: Aliens #4 (of 4) – 12,105 (-9.4%)

Was switching months with Predator, but missed last month. The drops never really settled down on this.

Final issue. And yes, that comic from three years ago does seem to be a preview of this series.

11/2009: -
12/2009: Escape from Wonderland #3 - 10,628 (+5.1%)

The first of two Zenescope comics whose sales go up and down seemingly at random.

175. Vampirella (Harris)

				2 year (+20.5%)

No, I don’t really get why this series bounces up and down so often. I think it has something to do with alternative covers, but I’m not exactly sure. This issue has a unicorn on the cover, must buy!

183. Transformers Bumblebee (IDW)

12/2009: Transformers Bumblebee #1 – 10,205

Four issue miniseries written by Zander Cannon (Top Ten).

Retailers can’t seem to cut their orders fast enough. It’s solicited up to issue 9, but it can’t last much longer can it? It did ship in the last shipping week in December, so maybe things aren’t that bad, but they still don’t seem good.

192. Angel Only Human (IDW)

08/2009: Only Human #1 (of 4) - 14,489
09/2009: Only Human #2 (of 4) - 12,672 (-12.5%)

11/2009: Only Human #4 - 11,995 (-3.9%)
12/2009: Only Human #5 - 9,532 (-20.5%)

Oddly high drop for the last issue of a miniseries. I’m not sure why some issues were listed as “of 4” as the series was announced as being five issues long. Again, shipped in the last week of the month.

193. Complete Alice in Wonderland (Dynamite)

12/2009: Complete Alice #1 - 9,388

$4.99 for 40 pages an issue. People prefer sexy Alice.

194. Chimichanga (Exploding Albatross)

12/2009: Chimichanga #1 - 9,111

Eric (The Goon) Powell’s new series. Interestingly, it’s self-published instead of being released through Dark Horse like The Goon.

197. Talisman Road of Trials (Random House/Del Rey)

10/2009: Talisman Road of Trials #0 - 13,410
11/2009: Talisman Road of Trials #1 - 10,752 (-19.8%)

10/2009: Declassified - 7,672
11/2009: -
12/2009: Murderer #1 - 8,454 (+10.2%)

This is the first of six one shots written by Robert Kirkman for Top Cow. Perhaps launching them around the same time as Image United and Haunt has overshadowed them.

200. Empowered (Dark Horse)

12/2009: Empowered One Shot - 8,361

12/2009: Crown of Shadows #2 - 7,707 (-22.6%)

This series is the last in “act one”, but unless they’re selling really well in collected form, I’m not sure if we’ll get acts two and three.

215. Barack the Barbarian (Devil’s Due)

06/2009: Barack the Barbarian #1 - 21,692
07/2009: -

A new round of three issue mini series begins. Not the best launch, but the numbers seem to bounce around a lot for these. Once more, shipped in the last week of the month.

The only one of Kirkiman’s comics not to make his “on time in 09” promise. However, he did write over forty comics this year. Astounding Wof-Man is ending at issue 25, not due to sales, but because Kirkman feels that’s the end of the story for this character, and is planning on launching another series.

240. Army of Darkness: Ash Saves Obama (Dynamite)

12/2009: Thulsa Doom #4 - 5,899 (-17.0%)

I doubt we’ll see any more of this character for a while.

254. Tank Girl

11/2009: Skid Marks #1 (Titan) - 4,902
12/2009: Nuggets (Image) - 5,803 (+18.4%)

This is interesting, as it helps show what the sales difference between the back and front of Previews is for a well known character (about a thousand copies). Also, is Tank Girl the character published by the most different companies? (There’s an IDW series starting in a few months too.)

255. Beasts of Burden (Dark Horse)

09/2009: Beasts of Burden #1 (of 4) - 8,628
10/2009: Beasts of Burden #2 (of 4) - 6,415 (-25.6%)

I believe further stories are dependant on sales of the collection.

I don’t know what happened two years ago, but sales probably got split into two months because of shipping issues.

300. Anchor (Boom)

10/2009: Anchor #1 - 5,655
11/2009: Anchor #2 - 3,725 (-34.1%)
12/2009: Anchor #3 - 3,403 (-8.6%)

Lowest selling title this month. If sales don’t turn around it might not be around for long.

==========
Just a reminder, all numbers on these chart are estimates for comics sold by Diamond to the direct market. They include reorders that shipped in the same month. A book shipping in the first week of a month will have more time for reorders to appear than one shipping in the last week of the month, when reorders will slip to the following month. Also these numbers don’t include sales through Diamond UK.

Matthew Murray really likes (vegetarian) cooking and comic books. Now if only he could somehow combine them.

Matt the reason Angel: Only Human #5 had such bad numbers is because IDW never announced its existence.

Like you said the series was only solicited as 4 issues. I had to get the last issue from a completely different place then where I buy my comics because they didn’t offer the ability to retro order it.

So far less orders got sent in. And IDW never did explain why they failed to solicit or mention it to anyone.

  2. I’m always jazzed by the Indy charts. Granted some are not making huge profits, but I’m also happy to see so much effort being made on this level.

  3. Drewskii says:

I had no idea Dark Horse was ending Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic so thanks for the info!

  4. Evan: You’re right, it seems that IDW didn’t have issue 5 in their December solicits (which I just managed to track down now, I wasn’t able to earlier). Thanks for letting me know!

However, the series was originally annouced as five issues long in the press releases that got sent out. I don’t know what happened.

  5. Christian says:

Have you posted the DC Month to Month analysis yet?

  6. Drewskii says:

Christian: See the Editor’s Note at the top of the page . . .

  7. The Boys uptick might be gains from the Herogasm mini-series. I read the title in deluxe hardcover, but did pick up the minis because it centered on the “heroes” and was an Event (so to speak).

As for Tank Girl, if counting only American publishers, I only see IDW and Dark Horse. Atomeka, Penguin, and Titan might be considered as well.

I believe the record is held by Groo. Pacific, Marvel/Epic, Image, Dark Horse, Eclipse. Licensed properties? Probably Star Trek. Gold Key (Checker), Marvel, DC, IDW, Malibu, Tokyopop.

  8. Corey Poole says:

I can’t say enough good things about Locke and Key, easily one of the best comics on the stands right now. It pains me to see it selling so low.

Ok, I’ve been told that BOOM! will keep this book around for 12 issues and that the sale of the TPB will determine the fate of the book. I do have to admit that the low numbers scare me. I really think this comic is great and those not picking it up are really missing out(don’t fans of low selling books always say that?).

The dude fights monsters on earth while his soul fights the demons of hell…AT THE SAME TIME! BUY THE TRADE!!! :D

  10. JesseBlazeSnider says:

Hey Boom Kids! Launched a whole bunch on new ongoings, why not cover them?!?!

  11. John Warren says:

    It’s JOSS Whedon, not Josh.

The only comics professional whose name is misspelled more often is Tom Brevoort. :-)

  12. As always, thanks for this chart.

  13. Torsten Adair says:

Jesse, given a) the direct market’s general lack of marketing towards children (Archie normally sells 2K), and
    b) that Marvel Adventures Spider-Man, possibly the best known superhero among kids and possibly the best version on the stands rarely (never?) charts above #200, then c) a media tie-in featuring well-known characters which never sold well in the past twenty years in the U.S., published by a smaller publisher, will sell fewer copies, and not make the cut-off for the Top 300.

Yes, The Muppet Show is awesome, the Disney titles are never-before-seen stories which have been successful enough to be spun off onto onging series, and the trades are nicely priced. Fortunately, Boom! has an agressive newsstand and library strategy, so the kids are probably finding the good stuff.

Geez… even the Simpsons Comics don’t chart… even with amazing talent… but the trade sales are strong enough to keep the comics coming.

  14. Torsten Adair says:

Whoops. Mea culpa… they did chart.

Mr. Murray, would you please list all independent (non-DC/Marvel) titles which chart. Analysis is only needed for the Top 200, but the list should be as comprehensive as the DC and Marvel sales charts, for comparison. Many of us do not read the ICV2 listings, and to omit titles marginalizes publishers, titles, and creators which already are marginalized by fans and stores.

That said, thank you for your hard work. I do appreciate it.

  15. Alan Coil says:

    Torsten said:

    “…the Disney titles are never-before-seen stories…”

Just to make it clear, they are never-before-seen in the United States. A minor point, of course.

  16. Phil Hester says:

Yes, The Anchor’s long tern health depends on sales of the trade… so buy two!

  17. Torsten: There were a couple of Tank Girl minis published by Vertigo, that one shot by Image, and the stuff in the Titan comics was originally published in the 2000ad Megazine (published by Rebellion).

John: I know that, I do. I don’t know why I spelt it that way. It’s fixed now.

I don’t currently do the Boom Disney titles (and the Archie titles, and Shonen Jump, and the Bongo titles) because they are distributed outside of the direct market, so knowing what they sell in the direct market is less useful than this chart already is. I will, however, look into this stuff.

  18. - JAMES - says:

Thanks for posting. Love looking at these charts.

I am amazed at Archies increased sales – and that it has been able to stay so high!

Glad that Incorruptible has started off so well. But I’m pissed the first trade is going to be dearer than the single issues ($17). Especially when the Irredeemable first trade was only $10!

Is Wolf-man (by Kirkman) as good as Walking Dead and Invincible? Because I love them series.

  19. I don’t understand the near-random sales of Grimm Booby Fairy Tales either. Some months I sell out, and some months I have all my shelf copies left over when they’re taken down. The subscription sales are mostly to women, and the impulse sales (I believe) are more to men.

(I hope the strikethrough HTML code works on Beat 3.0.)

  20. Chip Mosher says:

    Matthew,

    FWIW….you said:

“I don’t currently do the Boom Disney titles (and the Archie titles, and Shonen Jump, and the Bongo titles) because they are distributed outside of the direct market, so knowing what they sell in the direct market is less useful than this chart already is. Color me confused! The above just plain doesn’t make much sense to me, as the DM and the newsstand are just simply different beasts. Why leave out our kids books just because they also sell through other channels? I don’t see you leaving out Marvel’s and DC’s book because they are on the newsstand and you don’t have newsstand numbers.

This is especially odd when you can look through Previews in the last couple of months and see a whole ton of kids books coming from independent publishers that may or may not have mass market distro… I’m pretty darn proud of helping spearhead a whole new marketplace for these books in the DM and welcome all the other indy publishers that are helping build a whole mess of kids comics in the DM, the likes that haven’t been seen in a generation.

And… since I am here…. to all you people that care about these numbers, I’d highly recommend John Jackson Miller’s site here:

    http://www.comichron.com/monthlycomicssales/2009/2009-12.html

This is a site I find indispensable in its ease of use. What’s also great is you can easily glean info like this:

    Items in Top 300

    Marvel – 111
    DC – 85
    Boom – 19
    Image – 18
    IDW – 17
    Dynamic -12

Of those 19 books of ours in the Top 300, 10 our from our BOOM Kids! line.

And… this one’s for Jesse Blaze Snider… The TOY STORY comic he wrote ranked #268. Go Jesse!

    Best,

    Chip
    Marketing Director

  21. Argh, internet problems ate my comment.
    Chip, I’ll be in touch.

  22. dreamer says:

i think it would be more useful for people who complain and request more titles to be listed in these charts to simply do the appropriate listings themselves and post them as comments. that way you could both see that it requires some effort, communicate what you want to point out about them, make the picture for us more complete and make it easier for the column writer to include them in further columns if s/he pleases to..

  23. Micah says:

Thanks for the column. I hope BPRD rebounds with the new King of Fear series. The whole property is amazing!

  24. Shawn Hill says:

    “12/2009: The Boys #37 – 24,025 (+2.4%)
    6 month (-5.6%)
    1 year (-11.5%)
    2 year (-17.7%)
    3 year (-11.1%)

I’m not sure about the reasons for this increase. This issue featured the origin of the Frenchman.”

Maybe readers were clamoring for the most egregiously ethnocentric British diatribe against all things French ever to be found in a funny book? It was a way off-concept for this title, but hilariously so.

  25. Peter says:

    @James

Ok you made The Anchor sound pretty good. I wasn’t overly impressed by the first issue as it just seemed like another Hellboy knock-off but I’m looking at online previews of the other issues now.

I like some of the ALL AGES books out there right now. The only problem I ever have with them is that one issue will be great and the next one will be kind of stupid. No consistency. But I put a couple on my pull list because otherwise my comicshop might not order them.
