By Paul O’Brien
December saw Marvel gearing up for the next event season, with the prologues to both SIEGE and FALL OF HULKS. The other major new release was CAPTAIN AMERICA: WHO WILL WIELD THE SHIELD. That aside, it’s pretty quiet in terms of new titles. This is standard on the eve of a major crossover, since Marvel’s usual policy is to launch new books out of the big events.
While DC continued to top the direct market charts with BLACKEST NIGHT, Marvel regained a commanding lead in overall market share, leading DC by 49% to 30% in units, and 46% to 27% in dollars.
And since it’s the first column of the new year, let’s take a moment to remind ourselves that these numbers represent direct market sales through Diamond in North America. Total sales will be higher, because comics are also exported abroad, sold through other channels in North America, and repackaged for trade paperbacks and foreign licensing. And some books will do particularly well outside the direct market. Remember, also, that these numbers represent sales to comics stores – not all these copies were necessarily sold on to readers.
Thanks as always to Milton Griepp and ICV2 for permission to use their figures for these calculations.

4. CAPTAIN AMERICA REBORN
12/09 Who Will Wield The Shield - 80,771
WHO WILL WIELD… is an epilogue to REBORN, but in a curious scheduling snafu, it came out before that miniseries actually finished. While artist Bryan Hitch has taken some flak over this, the book has only slipped a month behind schedule. It’s hardly another ULTIMATES, and if they hadn’t extended REBORN to six issues at the last minute, everything would have gone fine. As so often with these one-shots, it looks as though they’d probably have sold more copies by caling it REBORN #7, but such is life.
Meanwhile, REBORN continues to hold up well, selling far above the usual range for CAPTAIN AMERICA. This issue has two variant covers, one with a 1:25 incentive ratio.

Both titles are officially cancelled in April, the last month of SIEGE, along with MIGHTY AVENGERS and AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE. Obviously this is heading towards a retooling of the Avengers line. NEW AVENGERS is the successor title to the original AVENGERS series, and presumably it’ll be back in May with a new number #1. DARK AVENGERS is more obviously linked to the “Dark Reign” storyline, and it’s hard to see how it can continue in any recognisable form beyond May – but I wouldn’t be shocked to see some sort of replacement title, given the sales.
Both books are drifting down right now, but with SIEGE next month and a relaunch in the spring, that’s no real concern.
12. SIEGE: CABAL 12/09 Cabal - 68,855
This is the prologue issue for SIEGE, and it has three variant covers, with incentives of 1:50, 1:75 and 1:200.
There’s been some talk that SIEGE doesn’t have the buzz of DC’s BLACKEST NIGHT event – time will tell on that score. Arguably the closest comparison to this book ought to be WORLD WAR HULK: PROLOGUE, but you can’t really generalise with books like this. For what it’s worth, that book sold 111K, but it did so in May 2007, when the event book mania was at its height, and you needed to sell over 100K just to make the top 10. Different time.

17,35. FALL OF THE HULKS 12/09 Alpha - 62,785 12/09 Gamma - 46,883
This is curious. These are prologue issues to next month’s FALL OF THE HULKS crossover, both with the same variant cover programmes. I’m surprised to see such a difference between the two issues, especially since GAMMA has the big-name creative team of Jeph Loeb and John Romita Jr attached. GAMMA was part of the last shipment of December, though, so it’s possible this is another case of a distribution screw-up leading to some sales slipping into the next month.

With J Michael Straczynski’s run over, THOR starts to catch up on its schedule under the new creative team of Kieron Gillen and Billy Tan. Obviously there’s some urgency here, because THOR is a key title for the SIEGE crossover.
Issue #604 has a 1:15 variant cover. Marvel have also cut the price back to $2.99, presumably on the basis that Gillen isn’t expected to have the same drawing power as a star writer like Straczynski. To be honest, sales hold up surprisingly well here, bearing in mind that the book was falling sharply during the last few issues of Straczynski’s run. Needless to say, a SIEGE tie-in is imminent.

ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN drops decisively below the level of the previous series, after only five issues. We’ve seen a number of relaunches lately where Marvel have simply renumbered a title, and it hasn’t made much difference to sales beyond the first month – EXILES, for example. ULTIMATE COMICS SPIDER-MAN could be part of that pattern, but the fact that it’s still dropping at this rate five issues in makes me wonder whether the relaunch has actually done some damage to the book, either because the poorly-received ULTIMATUM event drove people away, or because readers simply viewed it as a jumping-off point.

An assortment of X-book spin-off projects. X-FORCE ANNUAL has a lead story by Robert Kirkman and Jason Pearson, plus a back-up strip which is part of the Necrosha crossover. (And has Deadpool in it. What doesn’t?) X-FORCE is usually in the high 40K range, so this isn’t bad at all.
DARK X-MEN is holding up pretty well with its second issue. NATION X is another of the X-books’ anthology titles. The last was X-MEN: MANIFEST DESTINY, which launched in September 2008 with 49K, dropping to around 30K by the end of its run. This book seems to be coming in a little lower.
THE GATHERING is part of the Necrosha tie-in, and it’s basically an anthology showing how Selene recruited her hangers-on. It comes in reasonably close to X-FORCE, the lead title for the crossover.

Much as I like this book, the numbers aren’t looking too great. As I’ve said before, the repackaging of WOLVERINE as DARK WOLVERINE, a Daken series, appears to have backfired quite badly so far as Wolverine himself is concerned. Since WOLVERINE no longer exists, his biggest selling title is now ORIGINS, which isn’t even in the top 50. Considering that the character has been a top 10 mainstay for years, it’s hard to avoid the feeling that something has gone very badly wrong here.

We’re already more or less back at previous sales levels, something which seems to be an increasing problem with arbitrary renumberings. Bluntly, my feeling is that Marvel have squandered this gimmick on too many relaunches that amounted to nothing more than a change of creative team, and now it doesn’t work any more. That said, if this HAD simply been PUNISHER #77, it wouldn’t be a bad number.

Another miniseries designed to get some Black Widow collections out in time for the next Iron Man movie. This is an all-ages title, so by the standards of those books it’s doing just fine. Weird miniseries featuring the Star Comics characters, presumably to promote the collected editions of their original 1980s comics. The orders are modest, but again, the product is so niche that I can’t honestly say they’re bad.
172. IRON MAN: REQUIEM 12/09 Requiem - 11,008
A couple of reprints with a new framing sequence. Orders are perfectly fine for that sort of thing.

I’d love it if the rest of the comics buying public suddenly decided they’d rather read a really fun comic written by Jeff Parker about all the supersmart villains in the MU over something by Loeb, but I’m figuring this is just a fluke.
Wow, interesting. Makes me kinda nostalgically sad considering I remember years ago at Marvel when Thor was below 80K and being considered for cancellation.
Fantastic Four and Daredevil are amazing books that deserve much better sales! :(

I wonder if anyone would consider doing a post-mortem on Ms. Marvel? I’ve always been curious how a mid-list title about a second-string hero could stay in print so long, AND get printed in hardcover trade collections. Trade collections which seemed to be instantly shelved in the bargain bins.
Also, I take pride in being on the “4000″ who buy Marvel Adventures, Super Hero Squad, Marvel Babies at my local comics shop. Yes, they are not for everyone, but they are quite enjoyable!
(Hmmm… has anyone done a humorous Event cross-over?)
Ms. Marvel island-hopped from event to event like no comic I’ve ever seen.
“I’ve always been curious how a mid-list title about a second-string hero could stay in print so long, AND get printed in hardcover trade collections. Trade collections which seemed to be instantly shelved in the bargain bins.”
It seemed that Marvel wanted to establish her as their Wonder Woman.
Just a comment on Ultimate Spider-man. I loved the series, but I dropped when Requiem came out with a 3.99 price tag. I have no doubt that I would love UCSM as much as the original series, but I will not spend $4 a month on one title, with some rare exceptions.
A short version of a postmortem is that Ms. MARVEL demonstrates the problems caused by working on a series without a valid premise. The initial one, based on HOUSE OF M, had Ms. Marvel wanting to become a celebrity. That was obviously unworkable, and was eventually abandoned, but Reed had trouble coming up with other ideas. The writing was terrible. Reed wasn’t sure what her powers were; in one early issue, he had a Brood alien choke her, even though she didn’t need to breathe. In another issue, he had her have trouble with a hurtling car, although her strength was more than adequate, because he thought the scene was dramatic. The SECRET INVASION tie-ins wasted paper and ink having her fight and kill Skrulls in Manhattan until the final SI issue came out.
Even if Reed improved as issues went on, he couldn’t overcome the absence of a working premise. No one can.

I think Marvel’s original intention was to elevate Ms. Marvel to first-stringer status. However, what didn’t work in the series’ favor was that the book never could find a singular identity for itself and its lead character in-between all of the various crossover events.
“Remember, also, that these numbers represent sales to comics stores”
Does this include online mail-order sites like Heroes Corner and Mailordercomics.com or just LCS?
Chalk me up for another one that dropped Ultimate Spider-Man when the price went up to $3.99
Maybe it’s still as good as before, but $4 — nope.
Captain America Reborn has lost over 50% of sales from the first issue.
I remember when Uncanny X-Men sold a half million copies per issue. Ten years ago, these sales would have been grounds for cancellation.
My how times have changed.
Count me in for the Ultimate Spidey bail plan. Hated Ultimatum. Hated the Ultimate Spidey cross-over worse. That was my “dropping point.” $3.99 price tag on the reboot and I didn’t even think about looking back. Too bad. I was very fond of the book until Ultimatum came around.
I had to laugh when I read the below.
10/09 Dark Wolverine #79 – 60,076 ( -1.0%)
11/09 Dark Wolverine #80 – 52,394 (-12.8%)

Since you ask, yes, it did.

I love that Marvel’s approach to publishing is literally beyond the ability to parody at this point. It’s like when headlines from The Onion actually come true.
Brett: Ten years ago:

I find it interesting that Avengers (and we’re talking classic team, no Wolverine, no Spider-Man) was doing around 80K at a time where very little else was (and I checked the month before too since Dec 1999 had an anniversary issue). It wasn’t the center of the universe and as must read as it is now too. Granted, it also wasn’t a franchise of four or five books. Food for thought though.
Oh and about Ms. Marvel — I’m one of those who is getting it to the end.
What I’ve liked most about the book? One writer’s vision for it (albeit marred with numerous cross-overs). The character of “The Storyteller” (which will probably never be referenced again.) And — for the most part — it had really, really good art.
I’m usually not a fan of Manga-inspired art, but I *really* like what Sana Takeda has been doing on this book and I hope she gets another high-profile book.
Dennis: I believe it also includes sales to Canadian stores.
“Dennis: I believe it also includes sales to Canadian stores.”
Yes, Matthew, it does. Canadian retailers get their books through the US (even in Montreal where the books are mostly printed).
Canada is considered “domestic market” by the US for films, music, books and comics. When The The sings “This is the 51st state of the U.S.A.”, funny, I never think of England.
“It seemed that Marvel wanted to establish her as their Wonder Woman.”
Given that WW has never been a really big seller, and has suffered from all kinds of “event”-related problems over the decades, I’d say, “Mission Accomplished!”
It’s pretty obvious now what Marvel’s publishing strategy is by now: flood the market with enough titles to maintain their market share dominance, even if nothing sells all that well, because retailers won’t risk not ordering a Marvel comic. Stick enough variant covers out there to guarantee sales boost of at least 5,000- 15,000 more per title. Repeat each month.
Joey, you’re doing a heakuva job!
“I believe it also includes sales to Canadian stores.”
You’re right… I forgot about our Canadian neighbors. Should have said “North American” stores.
What have we learned today boys and girls.
1. Popular and/or creatively acclaimed writers (Bendis, Hickman,Ellis, and Aaron) are not (or at least, no longer) able to sale huge number of comics based SOLELY on their name alone.
2. Over exposing (and making them less unique by introducing several similar characters with similar powers and personalities) popular heroes (“cough”Wolverine”cough”) can and will eventually kill said characters popularity and result in said character’s books rapidly loosing sales.
3. Constantly relying on and/or over using Gimmicks/stunts (like variant covers, crossovers, relaunching with a new #1,or returning to the original numbering) will eventually loose their effectiveness to sell books.
4. Marvel needs a major editorial and creator over haul.
“4. Marvel needs a major editorial and creator over haul.”
In that case what does DC, whose arse Marvel kicks every month need?
North American comics needs a major editorial, creator, production, audience, environmental-policies, food-place and drink overhaul, gotchamadangit.
“Ms. Marvel island-hopped from event to event like no comic I’ve ever seen.”
She and Black Panther. Perhaps they should team-up.
I think Paul hit the nail on the head when he remarked that Ultimate Spider-Man (Oops, I mean Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) was a good jumping off point.
It seemed a shame to cast aside the old numbering, considering what came before.
The big kicker, however, was the $3.99 price increase for no extra content. I’m sorry, but there are other comics out there giving me more bang for my buck at the $4 price range. That’s where I draw the line. If you don’t give me anything extra, whey do I gotta pay an additional 33%?
The fact that it was a new number one issue made it really painless to drop, whereas I may have hemmed and hawed about dropping it at issue #134.
I’m curious why the Spider-Man and X-men Noir titles don’t have their original minis listed with them, like Marvelous Land of Oz does.
Does Marvel really need a major editorial and creative over-haul? I doubt it.
The sales for the market (which yes, they still dominate) are down overall suggesting that not all of the trouble is there own doing. I agree, the renumbering and variant covers seem to be losing their effectiveness, but when you look at in terms of income, as long as its bringing in ANY additional sales, its working.
I will agree with you on the expansion of character families though. What has been done with both Wolverine and the Hulk seems to be a mistake. I don’t believe in the “over-exposure” theory though. (Also, I’d get that cough looked at if I were you)
“In that case what does DC, whose arse Marvel kicks every month need?”
______________
The exact same thing that Marvel needs, a complete editorial and creator overhaul.
Just because I criticized Marvel in a thread ABOUT MARVEL SALES, DOES NOT mean that I don’t feel the same way about DC. I’m an equal opportunity hater and I think that most (not all) of the Big 2’s current crop of books are (IMO) garbage.
This post is missing the Sales Charts tag so people could have a hard time finding it (I did)
If other comics shops are like mine, then “Strange” might have had issues with its audience struggling to find it in addition it its struggling to find an audience.
Doctor Strange mini-series appear so sporadically that I have to notify my shop when I want them, compared to back in the day when the shop would auto-pull them for me.
I’ve lost enough interest in comics that I haven’t looked at an issue of Previews in probably years, so I don’t notice a new Doc Strange mini is out until it is on the shelves. And for various reasons, I don’t visit the shop on a weekly basis, so I might catch a mini on its first week or sometimes as late as its second issue.
Ultimately, I picked up Strange #1 from the shop. However, adding it to my pull list must have somehow gotten lost in the shuffle, as the shop didn’t pull #2 or #3, and I wasn’t back in the shop until #3 was on the shelf. So I just decided to not mention it and just grab a trade of it if I ever see one. Of course, odds aren’t too high that I’ll see a trade for similar reasons.
I’m stunned that the Avengers family of books hasn’t received a lot of attention. Those are some serious drop-offs over the past year, a year that had consistent creative teams and on-going stories. Is this the result of $4 comics?
Ms. Marvel Post-Mortem? I can’t look at a comic featuring a female solo character with a checkered history wearing a Cockrum costume from the 1970s that lasted for 50 issues as a failure at all. That’s twice the length of her initial run, and some of those “marring” crossover issues have become collector’s items already.
I think it (or at least Reed) did have a focus on exploring identity, which came from Carol’s alien foes, from the Skrull identity theives, and from the Karla Sofen imitation (which was probably the best run of issues in the whole series).
If anything, she suffered from problems similar to those that plague the Wonder Woman title (the book that stole her artist, Lopresti); in that way, she succeeded in becoming the Marvel equivalent of Diana, a strong woman nobody knows how to write.

Me too. I was wondering if they had stopped doing the sales charts and went onto the main page of the PW site looking for clues when I found a notice that The Beat had been moved. You might want to insure it’s labeled as a “sales chart” story.
Anyway I’m stoked I found it. Looks like I got a lot of reading to do this afternoon! I’m surprised by how many people are saying they dropped Ultimate Spider-Man due to its $3.99 price tag. I did the exact same thing (but I buy it when it becomes a discounted back issue). The $3.99 price doesn’t seem to be negatively affecting too many other comics though, does it?
