More on Vanguard/Frazetta

You’ll recall that last week it was announced that Frank Frazetta was suing Vanguard Productions for $2 million, claiming the upcoming Frazetta retrospective, FRAZETTA THE DEFINITE REFERENCE, was unauthorized. Vanguard sent out an email saying they were too busy to respond publicly at the moment, but directed readers to this blog post by Frazetta scholar David Winiewicz :

It started as an idea in the mind of James Bond (Yes, that is his real name). James is a longtime fan and collector of Frazetta’s work and he had the dream to assemble a comprehensive and definitive index to the voluminous published works of Frank Frazetta. He worked quietly for many years, compiling mountains of data for inclusion in the book. He went to several fantasy and science-fiction fan conventions and “talked up” the project. As fate would have it, I had also been keeping a growing index devoted to Frazetta. James and I met and decided to merge our efforts. James and I met with Ellie Frazetta at the Frazetta Museum and presented her a rough copy of the index.

    >…James and I met with Ellie Frazetta at the Frazetta Museum and presented her a rough copy of the index… We struck a deal, signed a contract, and then proceeded to bring this book into existence. Ellie introduced James Bond to David Spurlock, the owner/publisher of Vanguard Publications. Ellie suggested that David would be a great choice to handle the publication….>

Makes me wonder what the problem is. What is the basis for the lawsuit?

  2. Well, he does say they “signed a contract”, so someone must be mistaken here. Doctor Dave has been living in Frazetta’s pants for so long it’s hard to believe that he’d knowingly do anything without Frank and/or Elle’s permission. Interesting.

    Where’s the statement from Vanguard?

    rich,

    From above:

“Vanguard sent out an email saying they were too busy to respond publicly at the moment,…”

Vanguard is busy getting ready for Sandy Eggo.

hmm, I think it might be worth an hour or two of Vanguard’s PR time to respond to this perplexing claim. Unless they are already working behind the scenes and all that..

Yeah … a two million $$$ lawsuit ??? I’d find thirty minutes to send out at least a brief statement.
