cbrown -

Which goes to show how stupid most people are.

After all, the Flash doesn't just RUN fast; he does EVERYTHING fast (hold off on the bedroom jokes, please).

And anybody who doesn't think THAT could be turned into the basis for an entire SFX-heavy action film ... well, they're fucking idiots, because that was pretty much the whole basis of The Matrix, once you strip away all of the sci-fi theology that the Wachowskis ripped off from everyone else.

I overheard this exchange between two late-teen/early-20somethings in the gn section of a big box bookstore this weekend:

"Do you think they should make a Flash movie?"
"What can the Flash do?"
"He runs real fast."
"Right, all he does is run fast. It'd be a whole movie of a guy running fast. He runs so fast you can't even see him. You wouldn't even see him the whole movie!"
"Right!"

Movies are where the real superhero action is these days, and Marvel, having scored major hits with the current “Iron Man” and “Hulk” films (and with “Thor,” “Captain America” and the all-star team-up “Avengers” already in the pipeline), is cleaning up at the box office.

How can movies that haven’t even been made yet -- Thor, Captain America, and Avengers -- be considered hits? And what exactly is a hit?

Marvel Comics has put out far more movies then DC Comics. Some are good (Iron Man) some are really, really bad. For every Spider-Man 2, there is a Ghost Rider, Daredevil, and Elektra.

When it comes to reading the comics of the big two, I’m a Marvel guy. When it comes to watching movies, I’m a DC guy. I thought the most recent Superman and Batman movies were two of the best comic book movies I’ve ever seen. I didn’t even watch the most recent Spider-Man or Fantastic Four movie.

"In the US, that method of classification is obscure at best."

So true. It gets very convoluted trying to explain to someone that when I say that my books are for muter readers, or more "adult," I don't mean they're full of sex and and cursing. "Can my kid read your stuff?" Well, if they like more muter content. "I would never let my kids read anything like that." No, I mean adult situations. "Like sex?" No, like real life things that adults have to deal with, and might not be as interesting to little ones. "Oh, well, I better stay on the safe side and pass."

"Movies are where the real superhero action is these days"

Only if movies are as far as you care to look.
