Joe Quesada hasn't done anything for the comic industry. Civil War was bad. I'm know it sold 400,000 copies and such. But it was poorly put together and seemed to be done at a rushed pace despite constantly being delayed.

Do you see new, younger readers wanting to read Brand New Day or the New Avengers? I don't. There dark, dreary artwork combined with an incomprehensible retcon of the previous years stories. The unmasking was one of the worst things I've ever seen, but they could of AT LEAST ran with it, forgot about the twenty other CW tie-ins and done a story about SPider-man and people he's known over the year and more about them. I don't care about magical Spider-man people and them doing another generic story where Aunt May is sick again.

Despite the 'House of M' (also unispiring) (Uncanny/Vol.2) X-men

"How did the late shipping of EXILES #89 to stores on the west coast cause the book to experience a sales boost?"

As I recall, my theory at the time was that Diamond mistakenly added the late-shipping copies TWICE. It's the only one that made sense to me, at any rate.

"Btw, if it’s not to much trouble, can you please put up links to other SOO from other Marvel comics from this year?"

I'd love to, but it was somewhat of a fluke that I even laid hands on this one.

I have a question for Paul O'Brien that relates to an older column.

How did the late shipping of EXILES #89 to stores on the west coast cause the book to experience a sales boost?

First of all, thanks for posting a link to the SOO from PWJ.

Secondly, those sales numbers from the SOO (if I'm not mistaken) are from ALL sales outlets/venues COMBINED, not just the newstands.

Btw, if it's not to much trouble, can you please put up links to other SOO from other Marvel comics from this year?

"Looks like I was right about the sales of the current market being MAINLY driven by gimmicks/stunts."

The current direct pamphlet market, sure. Of course, then there's the direct trade market, the book store trade market, the emerging online market, and hell, some of these things still do get sold on news stands. (I downloaded the last issue of Punisher War Journal and happened to be able to read the Statement of Ownership on the last page -- apparently PWJ sells better of the stands than it does in the DM.)

So yeah, you've got one sales channel pretty well pegged, but that doesn't change the fact that the jury's still out on the rest.

I see many people halting on a lot of initial releases and waiting for the trades to come out. I know that I buy both the current issue of AXM and the Trade, mostly because I store the issue and wait for the trade to read the story. (Waiting 4-6 months for an issue makes it hard to read/raises expectations, so I don't) But with the decline in a lot of the single issue sales it would be interesting to see how the Trade Paperback and other story collections are selling.

Re: Avengers Classic
> Even allowing for the fact that it’s part-reprint, I’m really struggling to imagine how this book is paying its way. It doesn’t seem like the sort of project that would do any better through other channels.

It's meant to be defraying the cost of remastering Avengers Masterworks v1. While I wouldn't be surprised to see the backups disappear, this'll keep going for as long as it doesn't increase the cost of doing so.

And, yes, coding problems in the Loners-->Criminal area....

Marcus Lusk> And look at those Marvel Adventures titles: Sales as low as 4,500.

Yes, but they do most of their business elsewhere, as Paul O points out. Moreover, the material all gets about five lives - initial comic (DM & elsewhere), Two-in-One reprints (DM & elsewhere), Target oversized/stapled comics, Digests and, at the end of the line, oversized HCs. And a sixth has just been added in Marvel's Flashy rent-a-comic scheme.
