As an addition to Akismet I have JSSpamblock running (http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/jsspamblock/) which really seems to do the trick... Never had a spam message come trough so far. That makes them appear as comments on Wordpress blogs, and seems to be an effective way to get past Akismet and other filters. Bastards. I've been getting hit hard lately too.
