PERTH AMBOY GALLERY CENTER FOR THE ARTS PRESENTS THE FANTASTIC FORM: THE ART OF COMICS AND GRAPHIC NOVELS, an art exhibit curated by Raul Villarreal. The exhibit will be on display from June 14 to July 31, 2007 at the Perth Amboy Gallery Center for the Arts. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, June 14. from 5:30 to 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public.

Ever since their “Golden Age” in the decade of the 40’s, comic books have captured the imagination of several generations worldwide. The influence of comic books and graphic novels is more apparent today than ever in popular culture. Since the early years of Pop Art, artists have drawn inspiration and appropriated images from this genre. A genre that has been an interesting part of popular American culture, wars, and politics. Today Hollywood’s interest in the genre has generated even more public awareness and influencing a new generations of artists. The Fantastic Form: The Art of Comics and Graphic Novels showcases artists of diverse disciplines and concepts. The works chosen for the exhibit range from painting, drawing, digitally art, photography, printmaking, video, and book art. The work was inspired, or directly connected to the comic book and graphic novels art forms.

The exhibit features works by, Bambang Adinegoro, Helen Cantrell, Todd Doney, Joe Infurnari, Marianne Fourie, Samuel Holleran, Debra Jenks, Sal Mallino, Megan Maloy, Marc McKenzie, Jose Pardo, Ciro Romero, JR., Alejandra Villasmil, Sergio Villamizar, Ernest Shukara Walker, and Jason Watson. As diverse as each artist’s approach to the theme is also their style, technique, and inspiration. The Fantastic Form exhibit hopes to challenge and educate on the perception, importance, and perspective of this popular American art form. Thanks to the support of Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas, the Urban Enterprise Zone and the Business Improvement District. The Perth Amboy Gallery is an Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) Project and operates under the auspices of the city’s Business Improvement District, a not-for-profit organization.
