war! Decision at Downtown...deferred!
Word on today’s scheduled mediation between Gary Groth and Harlan Ellison and their assembled legal teams: Postponed until June 28th!

The rescheduling was necessitated because of a conflict in Groth’s schedule, according to Ellison’s lead lawyer, John Carmichael.

However, Carmichael says that all the lawyers involved are looking forward to settling the matter. Carmichael himself is eager to resolve the dispute “so my client can get on to more productive things and we can all put this behind us.”

  1. Does this mean these two are done having a lightsaber battle with their dicks for now? Seriously, whatever happened to good old fashioned pissing contests? I KNOW Harlan is old enough to remember those.

Am I the only person in comics who has no idea what this whole thing is all about?

  3. @ Pulphope: Think Don Rickles Vs. Laurie Flint, but without a trace of humor or porn. Not worth your time, mate.

Given that Fantagraphics have framed this as a first amendment case, I wonder what concessions they could possibly make that would allow Harlan to drop his case without totally losing face. Seriously.

  5. I have my fingers crossed. It will have been worth the abuse (http://pwbeat.publishersweekly.com/blog/2007/05/03/when-gary-met-shannon/)from the anonymous bloggers if those two find a resolution outside the courtroom.

Based on my limited knowledge of the cause of the fracas, I suspect that Ellison will settle for having his name removed from any promotion or solicitation for the book, having his registered trademark statement included, having the insult removed from the cover of the book, and requiring that there be no editorial comment added to the original interview.

Of course, he may get the entire interview and any reference to himself pulled from the book.
